Are generic runners really a bargain at $30?

    • I don't know who is going to buy them… The whole point of a 'brand' is that you know what they are about and have a decent understanding of what the quality might be, because there is no way to tell while in a shop how long they will last or how comfortable they will stay.

    • +1

Okay deal has been massively updated now. Is the spin bike or boxing bag a good deal as well? IMO there is never any shortage of well intentioned people with punching bags they're looking to sell on the cheap.

    • If only I wasn't an 11.5…sadly I'll have to let this one pass me by. Farewel adult premium runners

    • I think so. I mean if you're a serious runner, you should be replacing your shoes probably every 6 months or so (not valid for casual 5km once a week runners). With these you can buy quite a few for the same price as a big name brand.

      • If you're a serious runner you're still going to be buying branded shoes otherwise your feet will be absolutely (profanity). So while you can buy a few pairs as you suggest, the quality and ergonomics of them are in no way comparable to a reputable brand.

        • +2

          You don't know that

          • @Mrgreenz: Yeah I do? What athlete that runs long distance buys shitty offbrand shoes?

            • +1

@Kozhutki: Thats not really relevant to the point at hand, whats your evidence that running in these shoes will damage your feet.

          • @Mrgreenz: The point here is that you dont know - there is no way to know how long these will last or the damage they will do to you until the has happened. The point of a brand is that you have the experience with that product knowing it will provide a certain utility (overpriced or not).

        • +4

          Not necessarily true.
There's been a number of studies that suggest over-engineered running shoes may actually result in more foot injuries.
The whole minimalist running shoe movement came about for this reason.
If you are interested, Christopher Mcdougall's 'Born To Run' is a great read.
          See also : https://theconversation.com/expensive-running-shoes-dont-pre…
Having said that, I tried moving over to more minimalist shoe a few years back and although my form and speed improved, I ended up with an ankle injury.
My podiatrist's take on it was that the science of minimalist running shoes is sound, but if you've been running for years in supportive shoes, you're better off sticking with them as you'll more than likely get more injuries trying to switch.

    • +1

I bought two pairs last time and am a regular runner (I'm a sprinter). It's a decent pair of shoes but I'd probably only recommend it for short distances i.e. I'd recommend 5km or less runs. It felt fine to me and I would buy these again (In the past I'd buy Nike, Brookes and Asics but go through them too quickly that it was too costly).

      • Yeah could see them being okay for short slow easy running.

Ambitious of them to call it premium though. I like their optimism

  • +1

Any feedback about that Blood Pressure Monitor ?

    • +4

Have had an Aldi one for a couple of years now (so it looks slightly different) no problems and works fine, however have never tried to directly calibrate it to a hospital-grade one.

      • +2

Would you say the overall experience made your blood boil?

        • +1

Nope, my Dr was happy I was monitoring BP at home.

    • +1

…gonna get one for my mum who needs regular blood pressure checks.
this is very handy…cheapest one at our pharma was $100 and ranged up to $180+
…looks good & hopefully it works well

    • +1

      its excellent.

my sister is a nurse and has one herself. I asked the other day when i saw this sale how much she paid for hers and if she thought the aldi one would be decent. turns out she bought an Aldi one in the past. She highly recommended it which got me over the line. My fitbit knockoff is absolutely useless in comparison. Doesn't even do heart rate correctly.

I bought it this morning and used it to test it out. It gives the same reading my Dr. has been getting when I visit.

      • …managed to get one yesterday at my local. havent unpacked it yet..sounds promising
was lucky to get one at all…had to ask at the counter. i think they were down to the last couple of units

        • +1

had to ask at the counter

none on the floor at my store. they had them locked in a security cabinet at the front of the store with other high value but small items. I was walking out after checking the floor displays when I noticed the cabinet. lucky I saw them as normally exit the other way.

          • @Antikythera: set it up and tried it this morning….very good value for the dollars!
            even mums super impressed! 🤗

  • Hmm spin bike good quality? Anyone have to comment? Please

    • +5

      For $200, HIGHLY doubtful.

    • +1

It's just 13 kg flywheel. You won't get much out of it.

      • Thanks guys

        Hard pass then

      • What would be a suggested flywheel Kg??

        • i got this opinion from a friend who is into spin classes, for basic home use, minimum should be 18-20 kg. for serious use should be above 20kg. I personally have spin bike Model SPG 210. solid bike and its great.

    • +1

Get a bike trainer instead (if you have a bike)
      Actually somewhat enjoyable on Zwift

    • Hard to say without taking it out for a spin.

  • Ooo hows the quality on the boxing Boxing Tower and Bag? can it be replace for a longer bag ? anyone have to comment about it?

    • Saw it on sale last year as well but didn't get it, was moderately popular…not sure about quality though

    • +1

Probably best for "boxercise" type stuff and light training.

  • +4

People will go berserk for that trainer in melb.

    • A C T I V E W E A R

  • Nice now I can box away COVID.

    • +1

Are you even allowed out to buy it?

      • -3

Only if you're a mind control victim of cons like BLM. They get a free pass from comrad Dan while normal people doing the right thing get fined and blamed for the spread of covid.

        • -4

They get a free pass from comrad Dan

Erm, I don't think the premier has any power over the supreme court…

while normal people doing the right thing get fined

The BLM organisers were also fined.

blamed for the spread of covid.

The BLM protests occurred at all of the capital cities in each State. Why is it only Victoria that has seen a huge spike then?

          • +1

@brotherfranciz: The bias lies in that we hear of multiple people at private gatherings being fined, yet only a couple of BLM organisers of much larger protests get fined. Everyone attending should be locked up and/or fined not just a couple of organisers.

The reason why only VIC had a spike is twofold. 1. Because Andrews got it wrong from the beginning, but also gave certain protected individuals a free pass while blaming everyone else. 2. This: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxoFZP-cg2k

          • -2

@brotherfranciz: Another example: while protestors who are easy to round up aren't being fined police are smashing in car windows of others… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-rCQi7jOEI

If you can only shop solo, how are you expected to the bike or boxing tower home… (in VIC)

    • +6

Spin Bike $199, Covid Fine $5000. "There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's Mastercard."

    • +9

Assemble bike, tie boxing bag to it and drag home. Treat it as your first workout. Yes I am aware it is a spin bike, doesn’t matter. Just put more effort in.

    • Trolley or else Aldi generally has large trolleys to borrow for bulky items/

    • You can't buy boxing tower or bike in Vic - see 2Krazy post below

      • If only I could call the sharemarket like I called this!

  • +1

Is the spin bike any good or I'll be better off buying a bike trainer instead ?

    • +2

if youve got an ok bike to use get the trainer

  • Has anyone tried their track pants?

    • +12

Pandemic dude. I haven't tried pants in 6 months. ;-)

  • Wasn't the ab roller like $2.99 last time?

  • +1

Boxing tower was $129, inflation or covidation ?

    • ….one of those might come in handy for watching the daily press briefings

    • At that time the bag was sold separately, I think for $40 but yes still more expensive this time around

  • "World Health Organisation level indicator"

according to Donald Trump, they're always crooked :/

  • +2

Arthur Dunger LOL. I wish I could +1 more for your profile pic and profile name. VB comedy from the '70s. Nigel Lovelace was my favourite though.

  • What would the boxing bag be filled with?

    • The packaging says someone threw the towel in.

  • Damn the nearest Aldi is 1km out of my 5km radius. Anyone know if it would be acceptable to breach the 5km radius line if it's to buy exercise equipment? The wording for some of these laws is a bit vague.

    • …nah. youre limited to what is in your 5km radius, unfortunately

    • +1

also bike and boxing set isn't available in Vic

  • How can you get the boxing set when you need 2 ppl, I am in Vic…. Sounds like this deal is only for other States. Wife wants one so she can let off some steam during lockdown. Help.

    • Not available in Vic - see 2Krazy post below

      • Looks like ill be smashed. At least Aldi are doing the right thing.

I was at my local store the minute they opened, and they were already sold out. Asked a staff member, and was told they'd been put aside for people who called up to reserve them. Tried a couple other stores, but obviously by the time I got there they were out of stock too.

I don't know why I ever bother with the big ticket special buys, it's always a complete f**king waste of time.

    • This doesn't make any sense. If you were able to reserve special buys over the phone then why would anyone bother getting there early waiting in line? They would just sleep in and go to Aldi when they are ready.

Also I just googled my local Aldi & can't find a phone number. The "Contact Us" page says

      Special Buys™ enquiries

We’re proud to offer Special Buys™. But providing such great products at such low prices means streamlining our stores; and that includes not being able to provide special buys availabilities over the phone. To be sure you don’t miss out, we recommend visiting ALDI as early as possible when a new Special Buys™ range goes on sale everyday Wednesday or Saturday to avoid disappointment.

      • Thanks for the heads up about that policy. I'm going to put in a complaint, they're clearly not following it.
