Best Robot Vacuum for Large Home

Hi everyone.

Im in the market for a robot vacuum as ive just moved into a new house and im pretty lazy with keeping ontop of vacuuming. Ive never had a robot vacuum before but hoping itll keep on top of the dirt/dog hair. Not sure if it matters, but the house is fairly large. I would say approx. ~300m2 of living space to be vacuumed. And i have a dog, so hair to be picked up.

Ive seen some like the iRobot Roomba i7+ for $1900. Are these higher end models really worth the extra money, some cases multiples times more expensive? In saying that im not really interested in the bargain basement kogan models and the like as i feel they will die quickly due to the workload.

Depends, I'd say go with Roborock if you have hard floor or up to medium pile carpet. Great value for money.

If you have high pile carpet then i7/s9 iRobots will do a much better job.

Have mainly tiled floors, with medium pile carpet. But carpet is quite dark, and im reading that alot of robot vacuums struggle with dark colours. Do you happen to know how the Roborock goes in that regard?

  • I would personally recommend looking into Roborock I have large dog in the house that sheds like it’s no ones business. I run the Roborock s6 once a day and it keeps on top of everything very easily.
The roombas are great but I think far to expensive for what you get, I found the navigation on the S6 day and night difference between the Roomba I7+ we had previously.
Each robot uses a different style of navigation, Roborock uses lidar which is pretty much a laser that spins around and draws out what that is informs of the Robot, where as iRobot use Vslam which is a camera and a bump sensor to work out where everything is.
These both have their pros and cons, lidar can work at night plus you will have a usable map after its first run, with VSLAM it take a little longer ~3-4 runs before a decent map is up and running, but it cannot run in low light, but the technology with a camera is meant to be better for in the future.

One thing also worth considering, the clean base bags that your roomba empties into is meant to be one time use, but they are very expensive for what they are, by the end I was using a larger vacuum to empty out the bag as many times as I could before it broke.

Lastly, there have been some major issues with the cleanbase from what I’ve been reading, I’ve heard iRobot will be bringing out a refreshed base to fix this issue.

I went for an I7 to a Roborock s6, yes you lose the clean base, but we sold the I7 were able to buy the S6 and have cash left over plus the for me the navigation on the Roborock was night and day difference. But if you really want an auto emptying robot vacuum, you are pretty much stuck with iRobot or some other brands that don’t really ship to Australia.

    • thanks for the detailed response. Seems the Roborock is the way to go.

      • ANy deals at the moment on Roborock?

  • You could buy two roborocks for the price of a roomba. Seems like a no brainer. Use the search feature to see people's comments and experiences.

Be careful with the dog shit, it might smear everywhere and clog the robo vac.

dog is pretty good. Only shit in the house once in 10 years, and he made sure to do it in the shower haha.

Was going to say this too. For a large house, two roborocks would do the trick.

My estimate is that a roborock will do 100-125 m^2 on high settings before going flat. The newer models will go back and recharge for just enough to complete the house/area. My area (excludes a few rooms) is about 75 m^2.

You might have some areas that you don't want the vacuum going into or the vacuum can't get into, so my feeling is that 2x roborocks will do the trick nicely. You handle having two by setting up a virtual wall that each can't go through, and the bonus of having two is that you could leave the house for about 1.5h and your whole house would be done when you get back.

  • Have a look at the Eufy L70 highest wattage and bonus mopping function and will map out your home

  • We've got a Neato Botvac D7. Perfect for pet hair, and you can set up zones using your phone, so no physical barriers/closed doors required if you don't want it to clean a certain area, or go near stairs, etc. I believe there's a newer version. Our previous Neato (now about 8 years old) was passed on to a friend when we upgraded to this one, and is still running.

  • I would suggest buying two robot vacuums if your budget permits and if you have a big house, and program them to vacuum half of the house each.

  • I looked at many reviews and it suggests that Roborock is the best bet in the market.

Also, can someone guide me as Roborock S5 max is available on Amazon through a new seller i.e. Online Aussie Warehouse for $799 against the deal running on roborock.au for $849, don't know if it is worth it to take the risk of saving $50 + cashback from Shopback and ordering it from Amazon's seller as it says that the seller has just launched and there are no reviews for it too.
