Telstra Smart Gateway and Tangerine nbn

Hi folks

I am currently on Telstra NBN and planning to make a switch to Tangerine NBN. I called Tangerine today to check if I can re-use my Telstra gateway modem gen 1 (DJA0230) with Tangerine, but the customer care rep was not sure and advised me to buy their modem with minimum price $119.99.

Anyone used the Telstra gateway modem with Tangerine?

NBN type: FTTP
Current speed : 50/20
Manufacturer of Telstra modem: Techniclor?? found something on whirlpool - (https://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/hardware/?action=h_view&model…)

Also on the BYO modem page of Tangerine, I looked at the Techicolor tab and can't see my modem model (DJA0230) there, but can see the later version of the modem (DJA0231)

I am inclined to believe that my modem won't work, but still the ozbargainer in me want to check with the community.

I checked with ABB and they confirmed I can re-use Telstra modem and found some information on internet that the same modem can be used on Belong NBN as well.

Thanks

Edit: Connected to Tangerine.. Took only 3 hours to send the ISP username and password and 30 mins with tech support to get up and running.
Apart from updating ISP username and password, I had to change the ethernet cable to UNI-D1 to UNI-D2 on NBN box (Different for Telstra and Tangerine). Tech support helped me and my Tangerine nbn is up and running. So far getting good speed and will keep an eye on it.

Also can use https://www.whoismyisp.org/ and it will show provider as "Vocus PTY LTD also known as 'Vocus Retail"

I do use Telstra modem for FTTB with Tangerine. Not sure about FTTP though. All I had to do was to change the ISP username and password.

Telstra modem also works with FTTP, same config ISP user/password.

    • @laurojrs so Telstra modem is unlocked?

  • +2

hi, yes you can use telstra smart modem gen 2 with other ISP with fttp. Maybe just press the reset button the back of it, near sim card slot. And have the ethernet cable from your NTD go into the Internet/WAN port of the gateway, it should be like that anyways right now.

And it should work as normal, I am using my telstra smart modem with superloop nbn on hfc, no issues.

Reply back if its not working.

Don’t buy their modem just yet, try it with your Telstra modem first. I think it would work. Let us know as I wanna make the same move as well.

All working now. Took only 3-4 hours to get connected and get started.
I have updated the OP with more details.

Enter your Tangerine username and p/w into the DJA0230 settings and you're good to go.

          Hi

I got my nbn activated with Tangerine and recvd the msg for ISP username and password.

Updated the same on telstra modem and restarted it. Internet is up, now anyway to validate whether I am using Tangerine internet.

          Thanks

@bargain crazy: Jump on speedtest.net and it should say Dodo or Tangerine under ping.

@Twix: Thanks, mate, looks like it is up. Getting a mix of Internode, Vocus Communications (Tangerine) and Telstra.

Thanks for your help, waiting for someone to pick up the call at Tangerine customer service.

              • @bargain crazy: Those tests still show your connected to Telstra.

                Yep give Tangerine a call.

@Twix: All working.. I have updated the OP. Thanks for all your help. Have a good weekend.
Now all speedtest ping shows connected to Dodo…

                  • @bargain crazy: Don't forget to cancel Telstra. Cheers :-)

Thanks guys, sounds promising, haven't yet connected to Tangerine, will give them a call and start the move

    • i can pm you a Referral Code if you want :)

      Good move.
I was paying Telstra tax for a few years and the best thing I did is to move to another ISP (Tangerine)
I have been with them for 9 months and so far, so good.
I was paying $79.99 for 100/40 for 6 months ($10 PM discount introductory offer) and then called them at the end and they extended the discount for a further 3 months (as I told them I would switch to ABB with their $10 discount offer)

      Cheers

Yeah, I was only with Telstra due to 4G backup in case of failure. But can't justify the price now especially when mobile data is cheap and have sufficient data in bank.

        • Now I follow suit with utilities etc.
No one is going to call you and say "stay with us and we'll give you $10 discount for a few months as you've been a loyal customer"
They give you worthless voucher/discount on an organisation that you will never use "loyalty rewards"
Telstra call center is becoming mostly outsourced so why pay Aussie loyalty tax for OS call centers?
They only concentrate on new customers so therefore, I'll be a new customer to another and get their benefits too.
          Cheers

        • FTTP failure rate is low and easily fixed. 4G fail over should continue to function with Tangerine.

  • You ask to speak with someone who knows the answer…. if this is their standard of customer relations, then imagine if something technical did occur.

  • Been a handy post this one, I've got a question for you experts though!

Signed up with Tangerine this Thursday, just moved house into a unit last night (FTTP I believe) and set it up with an older Telstra smart modem gen 2 I had lying around last night.

I got it up and running by just changing ISP login on the 192.168.0.1 to my Tangerine details.

    Now the issue…

Every hour or so today it will disconnect, and pop up with an alert saying something like "modem needs you to login to your ISP" or something like that.. then it either pops up a telstra login thing, or opens telstra 192.168.0.1 browser page. All I really have to do it go to the login page, hit enter where my details in and in a couple minutes it's back up… then in 30-60 minutes it will drop out again and I repeat.

    Any suggestions?

This is strange. The tech support did ask me to change the cable on nbn box from uni d1 to uni d2 and then reset the modem.
Next step was to go to 192.168.0.1 and update the ISP username and password. It worked perfectly after that.

Also I see yours is gen 2 so the model number would be dja0231? This is listed as supported modem under "Technicolor" brand. Check the byo modem page of Tangerine.

Call tech support and they should be able to provide more support as yours is listed on their website.

You can also check on nbnco website using your address to validate what type of nbn you have.

      • Cheers mate.

nbnco doesn't tell me much but HFC. Also my modem is "Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 with Voice Backup" - Model # LH1000, so might be different to yours?

Connection has been solid for a couple hours now but those original 5-10 dropouts has me a little uneasy for WFH on monday..

Oh well see how I go I guess. I'll take your suggestion and call them should I have other issues, thanks.

EDIT: Just googled Arcadyan LH1000 and realised it's another name for the DJA0231 which puts me at ease a little.

  • In reference to last post ^.

Internet was pretty solid all afternoon, but dropping in and out constantly today. This is what 192.168.0.1 shows me each time it drops out

The router is still connected to the computer and it says "your internet is currently down" - so I'm thinking it might be a delivery issue on Tangerine/NBN end and not my equipment?

    • I had this same issue where the message was "your internet is down" and customer support could see that my modem/router wasn't connected to Tangerine. They did something on their side and it got fixed.
I believe it could be the difference of NBN type as mine is FTTP and yours is HFC? Just guessing.

  • these are pretty awesomely spec'd devices that you can hack to get voip working too:

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9vxxl849

    cheap too ;)

  • Just did the same, changed NBN FTTP from Telstra to Tangerine using Telstra's smart modem.

All needed was (1) unplugged ethernet cable from UNI-D1 to UNI-D2 (as specified in Tangerine's email), and (2) changed PPP username and password on Telstra's router via http://192.168.0.1

  • I followed almost everyone and changed from Telstra to Tangerine. Thank you all. Best move. All was working wonderfully since this post.
Over the past two days I've had two devices drop the wifi and now can't read it. Telstra TV and Sensibo (runs air conditioning from phone). They find everyone else's wifi just not ours. All my other tech stuff working fine on wifi. We have reset, unplugged and re-entered everything possible. Any ideas??

Is your 2.4hz and 5hz both enabled? My roborock wasn't connecting to wifi, turned out that 2.4ghz was disabled on router…

      • I went onto modem settings and no 2.4hz are running. How would I enable them?
And thank you for reply Bargain Crazy!

      • I turned off band steering as I read on a different post and lost internet on everything. Lol so it's back on.

  • Thanks OP, this was a really helpful thread.

I think the NBN connection box may have been changed since this post was made. I was able to use my Telstra Smart Modem Gen 1 without switching any ports or settings. I literally just had to enter the Username and Password into the Telstra router page under PPPoE settings (the tech insisted I type them manually rather than cut and paste and they are loooooonnnngggg…).
It's worked within minutes and I was connected within the hour. Simples!

    • Nah nbn have different connection boxes for FTTC, FTTP, HFC, FW & Satellite. What do you have?

      • Ah, ok. In that case, FTTC.

        • FTTC NCD has one ethernet port. FTTP NTD has four ethernet ports.

FTTP upgrades are coming if you are keen for 1000/50 or 250/25.

            @Twix: Thanks Twix.

I sure am. Reading suggests it will be a bit of a wait though.
