Vic Stage 4- Can You Still Sell on eBay or Gumtree?

I’m not sure if it’s allowed but I put up an add for contactless click collect on eBay and someone committed to buy but now he said he wants to view before he pays.

Is this even allowed in Vic?

    Yes

eBay and someone committed to buy but now he said he wants to view before he pays.

    That's not how eBay works.

    • I know his a new user and has limited English. Should I just cancel?

      • +9

        Yes

        • Yeah I’m going to cancel it, I have a feeling he will try offer less and might infect me possibly.

      • +7

        his a new user

Yes, your English seems a bit limited, but don't worry it will improve.

      • +1

        his

        He’s*

  • +5

If you're not sure - it's best not to. It's not about finding where and when you can and can't. It's about stopping people going about and infecting others (unknowingly)

How would YOU feel if the buyer comes around to check the item, and infects you, and your family, and your friends and your co workers? Is it REALLY worth it?

  • -2

i've got some gym equipment listed on gumtree, guy is less than 10kms from my house, asked me to drive to somewhere to meet him within both of our 5km radius. I said yes because i like how he's following the rules

    • +1

Is the sale essential? Are you okay to be infected for the purposes of selling the equipment? Are your family ok? Without the sale, will you be unable to afford food, or shelter?

maybe its essential for the buyer as it may be his form of exercise but … I question whether its essential for the seller.

      • COVID isn't some magical infectious organism that kills everything in its path. OP can wear PPE and complete the transaction safely.

        • +6

Wearing PPE reduces the risk. The risk is only eliminated when people don't make contact with other people.

Unfortunately, it is up to the individual to determine whether the risk is worth it to themselves, but the problem is that the community suffers when things don't go to plan.

The lockdown is to protect the community, ie - everyone. So, individuals need to stop thinking of themselves - which as a human is difficult - but .. comeon !

COVID isn't some magical infectious organism that kills everything in its path.

According to the media it is….

      • Totally agree.. I was hammered on a Facebook page recently for asking if someone really needed to sell her sunglasses on marketplace during stage 4 lockdown in inner Melbourne..if it's not essential stay the F##k home!

    • This is exactly the type of stuff you shouldn't be doing.

  • What are you selling?

    • Curry leaf tree

      • That sounds like food.

Can I leave the house during the Stay at Home period?
From 6pm on 2 August if you live in the Melbourne metropolitan area you need to stay home. You can only leave your home from 5am – 8pm. You can only leave your home for four reasons:

to shop for food and essential goods or services

        • Thanks.

I think I might cancel it as I think his trying to offer less when he sees it.

          • @Jumpup: I guess there's two arguments here.
            a) Can a buyer of ebay that has committed to buy now ask for a live-viewing before finalising the sale.

            b) Can you accept a guest at your house to sell something to them. When, for the buyer it is buying an essential item, and for the seller, selling it is possibly not essential.

            I think the answer is
            a): Sounds dodgy
b): If you left your plant out for him assess and have him put the money in an honesty box - then .. from a covid risk - maybe it's safe. But given a) he'll probably just steal the plant. So you kinda have to be there in person and … I would find the risk unacceptable. Esp given Vic's epic's contagion numbers.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

            • @FoxJump: I’ve canceled the purchase explaining why.

He is very keen but keeps on msging me saying he needs the tree.

              • +2

@Jumpup: Does he need it for his oil rig?

                • @one man clan: It comes in a handy pot which is perfect for worksites that doesn't have a garden.

                • @one man clan: No, buyer just said he’d die for a nice curry, and If it meant trekking across town without a mask and breaking the 1.5m distancing rule, so be it.

      • +3

        Googled it.

Disappointed. Did not have curry on the leaves.

  • +21

Mate I can’t even go to the bloody dentist because it’s not considered an emergency (regardless of pain and how bad it could be if it is not fixed soon), and you’re wondering if it is ok to sell some stuff you have lying around?

Seriously why does nobody get the whole purpose of Stage 4? Go out for FOOD, EXERCISE, MEDICAL SUPPLIES and WORK if you must.

    Everything else can bloody wait.

The point is to MINIMISE TRIPS and MOVEMENT and interaction or proximity to anyone not in your household so that we can reduce the possibility of the virus being transmitted.

Otherwise our 6 weeks will keep resetting.

    • +1

Medical care is 1 of the allowed reasons, even during curfew.

      • You are 100% right. I should have written medical supplies and care.

However, regarding the dentist, they are not authorised to remain open except for emergencies. They had called me to cancel an appointment for a much needed deep filling. Only urgent root canals and extractions are allowed by the sounds of it.

    • -3

Fresh curry leaves are food which is allowed.

You cant go an buy a curry leaf plant and expect that you are adhering to the rules because you are food shopping. Thats the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of.

Stay at home. Its not that bloody hard!

          • -1

@Belgarath: But you can go to Woolworths with 1000s of random people every few days and buy curry leaf for your cooking?
            Think about it.

            • +1

@Jumpup: Im not even going to argue. But again, ridiculous statement.

            • @Jumpup:

              every few days

              No, go weekly or less.

          • +2

@Belgarath: The buyer can legally go to the shops every day and buy curry leaves or they can buy one curry leaf tree and stay at home for 6 weeks making fresh curry.

Which option is more practical and safer for the community?

            • +1

@whooah1979: How about go without? is it an absolute essential no, small sacrifice for the greater good.

              • -1

@Xistn: Not everyone eat pasta, rice or pita for dinner. Perhaps when stage 5 implemented then the government can dictate what people can eat.

            • +2

              @whooah1979:

can legally go to the shops every day

We are being asked to exercise common sense here, not just to do what is legal because we can.

If you can reduce the number of times you need to go to the shops, then do it. For most households, with a little bit of planning, they can get by with weekly shops.m

If every household made this switch it would be far fewer interactions, and much safer for the entire community.

              • +1

                @jjjaar: You're absolutely right.

The buyer can make curry dishes every day for 6 weeks if they have a tree or they can keep going back on the shop to buy fresh leaves.

We grow herbs which saves us both money and time going to the shops. We've also set-up garden beds for vegetables once it gets a bit warmer.

                • @whooah1979: Same here. I’ve started a herb/ veggie patch and don’t need to go to the shops as often.

    • -1

Going to the dentist isn’t allowed because there’s been outbreaks there.

Dentists see multiple people each day with mouths open more than 15 mins which is a high risk.

How is it a risk someone collecting a herb/tree outside my house using PayPal as a payment method?

He even lives in the same suburb as me. Probably even walks pasts every day as I see people exercising outside.

      • +1

        Great. Sell your tree then.

Seriously, why did you even ask if you think it’s allowed?

        • I think it’s safe but I don’t want to get a fine that’s why I asked.

  • +6

Are people still confused with the purpose of these restrictions?
Finding a legal loophole doesn't mean you're protected

    • +2

yeah. looks like people everywhere don't understand that the whole point is to NOT see people, to NOT go places, to NOT do things. To be ANTI social as much as possible to stop the spread.

      Sigh.

    • -1

I’m assuming he uses fresh curry leaf in his cooking every few days. He prob wants to avoid going to the shops every few days so wants his own home grown food.

  • +1

Exploiting loopholes and playing with words to make them suit someone's personal situation is ridiculous.

Buying/selling a tree on eBay is not essential.

OP should wait until the current lockdown restrictions ease and then sell their tree.

    • -3

Bunnings ( Woolworths) is still open to click and collect. You can click and collect a tree (herbs)
That’s queueing up with random people then having your ID checked and/or signing a paper that you have collected an item.

How is selling the same item on eBay and asking for a PayPal payment and to collect the item outside a risk?
      He lives within 5kms.

  • +6

Yes, the accepted reasons for leaving your home are
    1) to get or receive care
    2) to purchase essential goods
    3) to go to work
    4) to exercise
    5) to flog your gear on gumtree
    6) to do burnouts in Melton

    • only applies in vic

  • I just bought a only slightly used TV on Gumtree and before I committed to buy it, I asked the vendor to show it to me on video on Whattsapp. I got to have a good look at it working, got a few questions answered and agreed to buy it.
He still had the original box and packaging and packed it up. To get it delivered, I put an ad up on Airtasker. Cost me $20 more than getting delivery from JB or TGG, which I considered to be pretty good value.

    • -2

The more I think about it I think this guy was trying to pull a scam. I had sent photos but he wanted to see it in person before he pays.

  • +2

Get it delivered by Australia Post, all our parcels come smelling like curry.

    • That’s what my friend working at the sorting centre says

  • +1

I've held off selling a used office chair on FB marketplace because of the restrictions.

  • +1

Good luck with your sale. Could a video link help make it happen? Can you send a sample leaf or leave it in a spot for them to view? On a note that comes up often, Covid is universal with mostly the same social directions everywhere in every language across the world. I live in a heavily populated new Australian area. They understand exactly what's going on - they simply choose not to care from the actions I've observed. I'm sick of it too, but I do it regardless. The utter arrogance of some is typical whether there is Covid or not. I think it's a personality trait that pre exists, rather than the "no English" cop-out.

  • +1

Just wait until after. I have some things I want to sell on eBay that can’t be easily posted. I am not allowed to sell them now so instead of trying to bend the rules I’ll just have to wait. Pretty simple really and it could prevent someone from dying.

  • -1

YES…. Look into a company called Sendle.

They pick up your parcel from the door, and deliver to its destination far far cheaper than that shitty Oz Post.

I received parcels from Melb just the other day.
