Can We Get The Australian Government to Bring in Masks Made from Banana? Cut Covid’s Plastic Waste

I was reading the following article online:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-28/masks-mad…

Do you think it should be mandatory that we only use masks made from a natural fibre called abaca? This substance is made from a plant from the banana family and will break down in 2 months.

    No.

Mandates are all the rage here in Victoria.

Do you have a permit for that comment?

        • Commenting wasn't an essential industry last time I checked. $1652 fine? Lucky not made out of curfew too.

Agreed, more government regulation is something I DON'T WANT during these forced economic lockdowns!

100% cotton is just too ancient I found out.

      • Cotton is better than synthetic but uses a lot of water.

        • I agree if you use cotton like the consumer disposable society we have it won't work. What did people do over the centuries, patching up your clothes just ain't as socially acceptable these days.

  • What is the cost of these as compared to the other types of disposable masks? Who pays for it. When you have hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs and worrying about where the next money is going to come from; doubt they'd be willing to pay more for anything.

Would it even be possible to have millions of these available for people to buy right now… not in a week's time; but now!!

    • Don't worry there is always money to throw away. AusGov just donated $2 000 000 to Lebanon to help with the bomb incident.
$1 masks for everyone, maybe the hotspots? No way mate, too damn expensive!

$2,000,000 goes a longer way to buy the support of politically undecided voters than a single disposable mask for everyone.

      • I know on the scale of things 2 mil donation is a peanut token but some people don't see that !

      • Lebanon to help with the bomb incident.

Wasn't a bomb. It was fertiliser accident.

    • If it's made of banana plants I assume the cost would be low. Also the cost of labor in the Philippines is cheap.

      • The biggest problem is availability. We need masks now - not in a week or a month - and we need them in the tens of millions. The whole question of making abaca masks mandatory is completely infeasible till you can guarantee that you can supply it to every single person in the country at a price that is the same or cheaper than other masks.

I had a quick look and I can't find a single place in Australia to get these masks - so the whole proposition is a non-starter.

        • That's correct. I suppose the only way to have these masks in future is if someone wants to do it and it's allowed by the government.

      • That's a huge assumption. While the plants may be cheap, the cost to turn the plant into fabric could be very high.

      • So low any monkey can buy it… just dispose of them properly otherwise someone might slip over one like a banana peel.

From the above comments I take it some people are not interested in taking care of the environment or eradicating the virus. New Zealand did a wonderful job and everyone there can live a relatively normal life. Their economy will recover much better than ours.

Whats NZ way of eradicating the virus got to do with banana leaf masks. Did NZ use those masks or just the same masks we are using here in Australia?

      • -2

NZ eradicating the virus has nothing to do with the masks. Just commenting on the overall situation and hoping these masks will be used in place of synthetic ones. I wish we could have eradicated the virus like NZ did but this at least is good for the environment.

I wish I could eyeroll louder.

    • Already got my 10 useable masks, made them myself. Don't know what everyone else is doing. They can use disposables. It is like throwing their wallet out the window slowly but you know the saying about fools & their money…

  • Can we get a poll?
