What Car to Buy at ~ $20,000 (Hyundai v Toyota v Other) ?

Hi all.

I'm currently looking to purchase a vehicle with a budget of around $20,000. I've done some research and have been thinking along the lines of either a 2018 Hyundai i30 Active or 2018 Toyota Corolla. Both have pros and cons and in your opinion which vehicle would be a better purchase? Should I look at any other vehicle in the price range and should I increase my budget for other cars?

Hyundai i30

  • Cheaper ($2000-$3000 lower than Corolla in NSW)
  • Longer warranty, 5 vs 3 years on a 2018 Toyota Corolla
  • Apple Car Play/Android Auto as standard

Toyota Corolla

  • Greater perceived reliability + better resale value, OzBargains favourite
  • Toyota Safety Sense Pack as standard
  • $199 to retrofit Apple Car Play/Android Auto

Update: Have decided to purchase a Toyota Corolla. Thanks all.

Which one do YOU like more?

Corollas higher price will be made back when you sell it.

    • Which one do YOU like more?

This. There is very little between them in real life and both sell well for that reason.

If you can find a Hybrid Corolla, even better (the amount you save in fuel should offset the higher price, and there should be less wear on the engine and the brake pads)

  • Hybrid Corolla (new one)>>
Best purchase you will ever make.

  • I have a corolla hybrid 2018 built in May and they won't allow me to install apple car play for $199 so double check before you purchase. I quite like apple car play. sucks that I cant get it for $199

    • Is that the new or the old shape/model?

Mine is a June 2018 ZR Hybrid, and I was able to have it installed.

      • Mine was May 2018 the dealer said it had to be after June 2018 to be able to install it.

There's no reason why yours wouldn't accept Carplay, it's the same system/software. Try another dealer

Wha? 5 comments in and no alternative suggestions of VW, Peugeot, Skoda, Audi, Renault, BMW or mentions that “iCe iS dEaD, eLeCtRiC iS fUtUrE” and that OP is wasting their time buying anything but a Tesla… I’m a little disappointed.

Renault Megane RS265 / 250 manual coupe. You haven't said anything other then the model or price in your selection choice. Unless you have test driven both model neither may even be to your liking. Just saying. Randomly I will say Corolla in those 2 selections, but both would be fine in general.

Somehow I dont think someone looking at 2 boring base model appliance econoboxes are going to consider a manual Renault…

You are very correct in that assumption.

We get it. You like your megane rs265.

    • Do you comment this on every car suggestion post? Or are there multiple folks around in love with french hot hatches? That seems unlikely…

I do when I see posts that offer no criteria to their choices. Just offering sonething else in price bracket. I did however suggest the Corolla, but that is very much my own opinion.

        • Sure it's in the price bracket, but it's not really similar at all. You wouldn't suggest a used M5 to someone looking for a Camry vs an Optima. It's a totally different vehicle and a pretty crap suggestion.

  • Hybrid rolla, save dolla

  • Hyundai don't keep an eye on the service departments of their dealers. Some of them recommend outrageous items to be done that are not a normal part of the fixed price servicing. I also had to return my I30 5 times to have a manufacturing defect that caused the fuel cap not to open repaired. I was advised to not drive the car pending the arrival of a part that took weeks to arrive. It was only after I threatened to return my new car as not fit for purpose that they actually ordered the part. I bought the car after my brother had a good run with an Elantra. My advice get local feedback about your dealer. The base model Corollas have dodgy Bluetooth on their radios.

    Import a nice Toyota Crown

  • Corolla with TSS 2.0 and aftermarket Openpilot Comma two will make a car with Tesla-like level 2 autonomous driving capabilities.

If you are considering an i30 then check out the Kia Cerato. Similar quality with a 7 year warranty.
I have owned a Cerato for 4 years, no problems at all.

Really depends on you. We went with a hyundai i30 (after trying quite a few different makes/models) as my husband found the car more comfortable (he is really tall and has a few medical/pain issues) and some of the other cars actually hurt him to sit in. I'm small with no issues so everything was fine for me. Kia cerato seemed a lot more comfortable (.ie.plush) from my perspective, but was not right for my husband as it hurt him and he didn't fit in it OK at all.

You really need to sit in them, go for a drive and work out what is right for you. All of them are good cars.

    Kia Cerato

Apple carplay, 7 year warranty, comfortable roomy reliable car

(that's what I decided to get when I was in your situation)
