Installing Windows 10 on M.2 Drive

I've just built my first PC and want to install Windows 10 pro on to the M.2 drive. I've also got a HDD and an SSD. The M. 2 and SSD are both 1TB, when I'm about to install Windows, I can't tell which is the SSD drive or which is the M. 2 drive, as they both are the exact same size (and it only identifies them as Drive 1 and Drive 2).

Can anyone tell me how I can identify which drive is which for the Windows 10 install? Thank you.

Just take the SSD drive out you can add it in later.
    Problem solved.

    1) before installing an operating system always disconnect all the drives except the M.2.
    2) install Windows 10 Pro.
    3) turn off PC & reconnect the HDD & SSD.
    4) turn on PC.
    5) go into disk management & assign a drive letter & format if required.

Formatting a drive deletes all data.

      Thanks

      • Install the May 2020 update from here

        • Cheers. Do I need to partition this drive before install? If I don't did it mean that the rest of the drive not taken up by Windows gets wasted?

@Milbo00: Nope if you want you can create a partition during install or once Windows install is finished. There will be lots of spare usable space.

After Windows installation run Windows Update, install your drivers and software.

careful about installing that update, i've read it might have compatibility issues with some systems and to wait until it's available through windows update in settings .

          • @amethystau: There is compatibility problems with every update. All the details, known bugs and fixes can be found here

  • Sorry to jump in but I have a pc with W10 installed on a HDD. I am about to buy a M.2 drive (either the Kingston A2000 1TB M.2 SSD $139.95 + Delivery @ Shopping Square or the WD Blue SN550 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD for $170 at Amazon) and I was wondering how difficult it was to transfer the windows installation across to the new drive.
