Tangerine nbn - Which Router to Buy?

I signed up for Tangerine NBN the other day and BYO router with my Telstra Smart modem gen 2 (arcadyan LH1000).

I have NBN, HFC connection with Arris NBN router, Tangerine is PPPoe

I've had nothing but trouble and it keeps disconnecting and attempting to reauthenticate.. so I want to buy a new modem.

The 3 that Tangerine recommend all have shocking reviews:
Netcomm NF10WV
Netcomm NF18ACV
Netcomm NL19ACV

I want to buy a different router, who can recommend something that would be compatible with my service - I live in a 1 bedroom apartment with my partner and we both work from home, so need something reasonable.

Any suggestions?

  • When your HFC disconnects do the lights on the NBN modem turn off or stay green?

How much do you want to spend?

Netgear Nighthawk works great with my Tangerine service (edit: FTTN)

For HFC, the Arris device is the modem, the Telstra smart modem can be used as a modem router. Its currently being used as a router. I can't comment whether it is the Telstra device or it could be problems with the NBN network. Have you tried wired connection (ethernet) to the Telstra Smart Modem?

  • Asus, rock solid routers

  • Hey OP, I am using Tangerine HFC and Asus RT-AC86U without any issues. Just trying to help by making sure you know what you are doing.

The Arris NTD is the modem. It should have been set and all you need to do is power cycle it. Been told it could take up to 30 minutes for it to get connected properly sometimes.

You would have received login and password from Tangerine. This is where you enter the details in the router to login via PPPoE. After the setting is done power cycle the router.

If you don't need anything fancy with wifi6 the Asus RT-AC86U is great for around $210 - $250. It's getting old but it's a great workhorse.
