It's generally agreed the Vodafone TV box is better unit for $72 delivered
    https://www.vodafone.com.au/vodafone-tv

    • Yeah, I also heard it was updated to android 9

      • +5

One of those things that everyone wanted but now despise. The upgrade disabled NTFS USB support to the anger of the community.
Vodafone claim it’s irreversible due to Android limitations, but plenty of other boxes have re-enabled it after the update.
It seems like a dodgy move to block users from accessing movie files (as the only format you are left with is Fat and it’s 4gb file size limit).

But still a good box for Kodi and it’s addons (and still the ability to watch NTFS files off USB via router)

        • +3

          FAT32?

        • +1

          Only FAT32.
          The rest are aspirational only

          • +3

@Tuttle: Some of the above ones sound perspirational…

        • I had this problem on my smartphone as Android 9 removed support for NTFS, so I did a bit of research.

I found Paragon NTFS for USB works fine, and allowed me to download stuff on my phone and transfer it across OTG. Was great since it was such a great feature I had missed due to not having exFAT or NTFS, I wished I knew about it sooner.

It's on the Play store so you should be able to get it on the Vodafone TV. Use Total Commander to manage the files as it uses a plugin for it to work.

          • @adamiscoolization: I think this workaround meand you have to navigate to the movie file, then play. Don't think it would work inside Kodi though.

        • +1

NTFS is a Microsoft format so understandable. ExFat all the way. Works across android, windows and Mac.

          • @Pinchy: Not this android (without the workaround above)

        • Spent hours trying to map a drive from VTV to shread HDD plugged into router with no joy. Any tips?

    • +7

The Foxtel one does make a better coaster for your coffee though…

      • +1

As long as you don’t mind it turning itself off every time you finish taking a sip!

        • I think JV is suggesting not to plug it in.

    • +1

This. For the extra $23 it is light years better. We have 2 of these Foxtel boxes at work and they absolutely suck. We put them through their paces and they crash frequently and bug out. I have 2 VF boxes at home so I’ve tested both the Foxtel and VF boxes extensively. VF box is a clear winner and worth the extra money. Can’t speak for the USB support as I have a NAS server. The VF box is fantastic running Plex, NetFlix, Stan, Kayo and even Foxtel. With built in Chromecast and Android 9. Clear winner in my eyes.

      • +1

And it's only $11 difference. Postage is $12 for me to Brisbane

      • Just two thoughts. Having lost a bit of functionality with the VTV having NTFS removed (and having to run a FAT32 drive with file size limits), and having to split audio via the TV, I like that the foxtel box has SPDIF out and NTFS.

    • Bluetooth remote and tv aerial input are a plus here

      • +2

Vodafone has TV aerial input and a better remote (that is also Bluetooth).

        • Thanks for that

        • +1

FYI Foxtel also has TV aerial input

    • Will this connect Optus sports from your iPhone?

  • +1

Is it worth it just for the 4K chromecast?

    • +12

No. I bought one and it is an unreliable POS. Half of the time it just comes up with a black screen. I also have a Chromecast Ultra which is far superior for that purpose.

      • -2

        Taking away your OzBargain License.

        • +1

A not-fit-for-purpose product is not a bargain at any price.

          • +3

@CocaKoala: I think everyone misunderstood my comment. I meant to say Taking away your OzBargain License, for the simple reason that you wasted money on a piece of cr@p.

            • @anonymous01: I bought one for $50 last year. Works fine. Never had any issues with it.

I only use it to watch Foxtel Now/Go though… I use the AppleTV4 for everything else.

              • @crazyj: With mine, it is a lottery if it works or not. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it doesn't even power up from standby.

The only thing I like is the TV tuner - when it works.

  • +18

Foxtel, Kogan - all we need now is Harvey Norman for the trifecta.

    • +12

      The holy trinity (of scum)

  • +4

They're paying us $49 to take this crap off their hands, right? Otherwise it just doesn't make sense.

  • according to this, can side load apps https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2735348 .. I've been looking for a replacement for the old nexus tv puck.

    • +7

I can recommend the Vodafone TV as a decent, affordable Nexus replacement. Good product for $72

    • +1

My Nexus player is still kicking on. Going to be sad day when it finally lets go

      • +2

just saved $49 by not buying.. sticking with nexus tv

  • Do you need login or is kayo login ok?

    • +1

You need to create a foxtel login but don't need an active subscription.

      • Thanks, I though they cancel your login when it's not active

  • The foxtel on demand integration with TV is great, but something to keep in mind is that you only get one free trial per box. No amount of using new accounts or resetting to default seems to change that.

    • Really?

I'm always fascinated by drm and the how it's broken or why it can't be

  • +1

    Where is this box manufactured?

    • +6

      In a factory?

    • +4

Where else do you think a cheap plasticky electronic box being manufactured?

      • Jamaica?

  • -2

    Chhhhhhhromecasttttt

  • I got this one, with the $20 voucher from Citibank. Happy so far, I only use for chromecast or a few video apps from playstore (like Viki or the catchup TV thing) though.

  • +3

I would only recommend this box if you’re planning to use Foxtel now, otherwise you’re left with a Foxtel interface that has some android tv capability and is only semi reliable.
I had one and got rid of it when I cancelled Foxtel Now, the Vodafone TV is miles better and worth the slightly extra money.

    • sorry, duplicated post. got info below.

  • Quick question - if I've got access to Foxtel Now via my inlaws sub, say, is this a decent buy?

Watching via an EPG on Kodi is kind of shit but for 50 I'd be all over this if it gives a proper STB experience in that scenario.

    • +1

I would still buy the Vodafone box and run Foxtel through that. The Foxtel box is a buggy, unreliable POS.

      • Well that's interesting - can you get the Foxtel Now app and sideload it on any Android TV system? I've got a mibox and it's not available for that on the Google Play Store. If it turns out I can get the Foxtel Now app on that then I might even get a kiss off her tonight.

        • Foxtel Go is natively available on the Google Play Store on the Vodafone Tv. If you can get your hands on an APK of it (apkmirror?), I don't see why it wouldn't work on Mi Box. Should be easy to install.

          • @JoelT: Cheers, it'll be around somewhere then. I'll have a play, thanks for your help.

        • +1

The Foxtel app is available in the Play Store on the VTV - you can log in with either your Foxtel Now details, or your satellite / cables details if you have multiroom or multiscreen.

  • i know the foxtel box doesnt have an antenna input but can i use the vodafone box as a pvr?

im trying to find an easy to use cheap pvr but my first attempt (a laser branded box) isnt up to scratch with my partner (she needs an easier to use interface) and it would be good to have netflix on it too if possible

  • +1

Thanks for the thread, gang. Talked me out of it. Was wondering what the Foxtel now integration would be like, now I know.

  • +2

This is the most buggy media player / device I have ever used. It's crashes often, takes forever to connect to the wifi / internet… Android rubbish

    • Same, except for the 'Android rubbish'. Plenty of good stuff out there.

  • i have the Vodafone tv, and idk if this is an issue from my galaxy buds, but the Bluetooth galaxy earbuds connected to the vodaphone tv device not only lags (out of sync audio) on Netflix and YouTube.. there is also another issue which is when i turn off the device using the remote, and turn it back on i have to go manually forget the earbuds in the device menu and reconnect them every time! why? because they just dont work after you turn off the device there is no auto connect support, this has to be done manually for them to be connected again, its so annoying and Vodafone has not fixed it, so if you thinking about using your Bluetooth earbuds, there is this issue.

  • Nothing a nvidea wouldn’t fix

  • Can download the Steam Link app on this? Want to stream games to my living room.

  • -1

Sorry what are you guys using these for soz for noob Q,? if you have a dumb TV old TV or just to get the latest Android apps I have an old smart TV and one dumb new aldi TV

    • +1

People mainly use them for streaming services like Netflix, to watch over the air TV and to play video files they’ve created or downloaded.
As people have said above, I would definitely recommend the Vodafone TV over this box, you will get a much better experience.
Also it runs Android TV, which is not the same as Android on phones or tablets. It runs apps that are specific for tv use, and uses a simple tv interface.

  • Am I the only guy on the planet who thinks this isn't a bad product? I use it every day and probably have an issue or crash once every few months. It's not amazing, but it's not bad. I have a Shield in the lounge room and a Now Box in the bedroom and it works out okay. The Shield is obviously superior in every way, but I like that the Foxtel element is front and centre on the Fox Now box. And I don't see it crashing nearly as often as people make out in here. Maybe once every 3 months I get a crash event.

    • +1

If you're a Foxtel customer and that's the main reason you use it for, then it's a great product for $49!

If you're not though, then I'd imagine the Foxtel elements would be annoying and it still requires an account with them to use. Users who watch primarily Netflix, Disney, Kodi, Amazon, catch-up services, FTA channels, then a more vanilla Android TV experience would be better and hence Vodafone TV, Mi Box, Mi Stick, new Google dongle, Shield TV are going to be more popular…

  • If you have a Telstra post paid service you might be able to get this for an extra 20 days of free trial over normal
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/537686

  • Any suggestions on the best/cheap way to watch Foxtel go on the tv? Our tv already has Netflix etc, just not Foxtel go
(Tried screen mirroring and it's laggy, and HDMI with a laptop is a pain when you want to use it at the same time)
