  • Does it have a manual drip tray or a pipe for the waste to go outside. Also does it have 2 hoses 1 for cold air in hot air out or does it have to use the same hose

    • +1

Thanks for your question. here is the answer and some more information
      * Self evaporative system - no drip tray or hose required - answer to your question
      * Guaranteed cooling in 43 degrees celsius
      * Suitable to cool rooms up to 29m2
      * 24 hour timer
      * Remote control
      * Dehumidifying function
      * Flexible Hot Air Exhaust Hose through wall or window included- answer to 2nd question

Also not much more, only $72 for the Inverter Version that saves even more electricty.

      • Just a heads-up for people; single-hose portable systems are fine for cooling, but beware of systems claiming "3-4kW of reverse-cycle heating", because they don't do that, and cannot. The design doesn't allow for it.

The cooling cycle works by absorbing heat within the room into a gas, then compressing the gas to concentrate the heat and expel it out the hose (which creates negative pressure in the room, drawing in warmer air from elsewhere, but that's a separate issue). The reverse cycle in a split system absorbs heat from outside the room, concentrates it and expels it into the room, but in a single-hose portable there is no air intake hose, only an exhaust, so it can't get heat from outside. It can only absorb heat from the same room it's blowing that heat back into, so there's no net gain (apart from a kW or so of frictional heat).

Net result: mildly warmer air, nowhere near the claimed 3kW. I've confirmed this with multiple single-hose brands, and they're all less effective than an ordinary 1200W blow heater. Buy it as an aircon only, NOT as a heater.

  • Ok what about the guarantee and warranty. I have been told they dont work well. I have a small open bedsit so i think it should work well for my house but incase it doesnt whats the return policy like

    • 2 Year Guarantee from Manufacturer direct to you, if it does not suit you, just return in the first 2 weeks in original box and we will refund you.

      • -1

2 weeks is very short time to deal with you so what is involved in the manufacturer guarantee?

  • HI Rep-

Would the inverter one go with slide up windows? I think they are called casement windows. The description says only with slide across windows.

Also, what is the freight on these items to PERTH?

    • it should suit sash windows the ones that slide upwards. according to HN's website anyway which is selling the 4.4kw for $996

      • Thanks for that. Now if the rep could tell me the freight amounts.

        • +1

Hi Sasangeleus. Perth Metro Delivery is $49.95. Unfortunately freight to Perth costs more then Vic and NSW Metro. But it still works out a great bargain. I am suprised we only got one vote on this one considering we are a $500 saving 50% cheaper then Harvey Norman and nobody is even close to us on this one. I even bought one myself and I don't need it just because it is so cheap. This has to be an awesome bargain. :)

    • The instruction manual shows it mounted both ways.

  • Noise Level: 58dba on the inverter model. What is it on the cheaper model?

  • 58dba is that loud?

    • From looking at a couple of webistes 58dba appears to be normal for an air conditioning unit.

      Some comparions… http://bootheglobalperspectives.com/article.asp?id=298

    • I checked the a/c in my room. It's an inverter wall type. It lists dba by the fan speed: High 39, Low 27, Quite 21.

I wonder if 58 is based on the highest setting?

      • That is correct. based on the highest setting

        • Thanks. I bought the inverter model.

It's bloody loud. You have to double the TV volume. I bought one of these 'styles' of A/Con units. returned it the following day.

      They are too noisy.

The heat 'pipe' makes the room hot (even if you try to insulate it).

As the 'heat' is pumped out of the room, the unit draws air into the room, house that is not cold and hence you just cool the air down only to pump it out of the room.

My advice: if you wanna do an A/C on the cheap, get a window cassette (vertical) mounted job. They go for about $500-$600 on ebay. These do not create a vacuum in the room and do not waste that cooling capacity.

Hi Eagleanthony. appreciate your point of view but I thought this forum was meant for bargains. no matter what your personal opinion may be. This is definitely a bargain at $500 discount no matter what you may think personally about the product. Please remove your negative vote as it is not fair. :)

      • It's for my foster childs bedroom. I looked into the window cassette. I read they stopped selling them because they don't comply with energy efficiency requirements. I couldn't find any retailer who still stocks the Teco or Nationwide window cassette.

The built-in wardrobe and window leaves no space for a back to back install. The room also shares internal walls with the laundry and the other wall with a bathroom. I don't think I can install a wall unit.

I owned a portable a/c back in 2002. It cooled the room. I'm happy I bought one before they sold out.

        • Even a 30yo inefficient window cassette air con is much more efficient than an AC that pumps cooled air from the room outdoors. If the unit had two pipes going outdoors (suction and exhaust), only then could it be considered efficient.

Any device that exhausts air from a room that has been cooled is extremely inefficient and only suitable for temporary use, eg for guests on a weekend etc.

      • You need to rig up a twin hose arrangement. It can be done with abou $30 worth of bits from bunnings. It means the ac can work properly without emptying the room of cold air. Only thing then is the noise.

        • Can it be done on any single hose AC?
( I am interested in the inverter Dimplex)

        • +1

          @gagans yes its pretty straightforward…

          1. Cut your existing hose into two lengths assuming both lengths can still reach out your window, or buy an extra hose.
          2. Get a large plastic box/container that is the correct size opening to be able to cover the condenser inlet vent. (on the dimplex its the lower set of vents on the back).
          3. Cut the right size round hole in the side/bottom of the box and thread one end of the hose in and tape it. Stick some draught stop type tape around the opening rim of the box and then use a bungy cord to strap it to the AC in the correct place (a ratchet tie-down is good for this too). Run both hoses out the window and seal around them with a piece of thin ply cut to shape. You can squash the end of the hose to fit into slot shaped cut-outs in the ply.
          4. ???
          5. Profit.
  • Hey Handelbert, How long is the exhaust hose it comes with?

  • +1

Good question. Unfortunately I do not have that information handy after hours. I will try to find it and post for you nonetheless

    • thanks rep! I bought a unit anyway, but if you could let me know that would be great!

Yea I was a bit suprised too that we only got 9 votes on such a slam dunk of a deal. :) and even one neg vote. hehe.. what can I do? I just post them and you guys decide.

    • Rep, please let me know also. Would be interested to get either units. Thanks!

        • hmm.. missed out again :-)

  • I have a dimplex, its pretty loud but its a lifesaver in the summer. A split unit would be way better, just that I cant install one in my unit. For this price, its value for your money so I will +ve this deal.

  • +1

Hi Guys. We have called the distributor this morning and requested another 100+ units. We are waiting for a call back soon and hopefully we get some good news. I will report back as soon as we find out

    • can you make any reservations?

    • How much is the delivery fee? (sydney / nsw)

    • Please post deal here or contact us from the contact button in ozb.

  • I bought a 12000BTU portable air-cond couple years ago. It is very loud and not very effective, unable to cool down my master bedroom. Interested to know if the inverter ones works better.

  • Is it possible to buy dual hose portable aircons in Aus. Can the Op get any?

There seem be so many models of these in USA, but hardly any in Aus.

The 2 hose designs are far better/more efficient at cooling.

    • Is the inverter based Dimplex model has twin hose or not?

      • Its not twin hose.

    • +1

Just make your own twin hose setup (see above).

There was a Delonghi model that supported twin hoses a few years ago, but you had to buy the 2nd hose as an optional extra.

Much easier and cheaper to make your own.

      • Thanks Stumo. Looks like you own a Dimplex Portable.
If yes, Are you happy with it?

        • +1

No I don't have one of these, I was looking at the owners manual online because I was thinking about getting it, but then it sold out from under me.

I've done the redneck twin hose kit on 2 different monobloc ACs and it has worked really well both times. The dimplex looks like its perfect for the kit, having the vents low down at the back and a nice flat surface to seal and strap to.

        • I dont have experience in these. But I like Dimplex products. thats why I was interested.
Do you think it will be a nice buy for 569 + postage for inverter Portable without doint own dual hose thing?

        • Personally, I think it will suck without twin hoses, just like every other single hose monobloc.

It's a complete and utter waste of power.

      • happy to diy bunnings my own hose mate. but wouldnt the air con actually need to support twin hoses?

I guess that's what i meant. What models do this?

  • HEY OZBARGAINEERS! We've JUST received only a hand full of Dimplex units, which I've just listed on our site now, these will be gone in anywhere from minutes to hours - this is likely the last chance as we aren't expecting more. Just letting you guys know - the listing just went up!

  • Awesome, just bought it!
    Hope it works!

    • LOL! Well if it doesn't I guess it'll be coming back! Don't worry we'll always look after you 100% should there be an issue - but anyway it has a 2 year Dimplex Australia warranty too. Grats on the purchase, theres only about 35 more left give or take as at 6:30pm

      • Haha Thanks,

I'm sure the unit itself will be fine, I've just heard plenty of bad things about portable air-cons, but as it's my only choice, I'll take the gamble :)

  • My order from Wednesday is in processing. How long before they ship?

    • +1

      Hi, Wednesday orders have shipped!

      • I ordered mine on Wednesday but i just checked on your site and it says its still Processing.
