Google app takes up 1 gig of space on iPhone - why?

Trying to reduce storage on iPhone but stumped by google app using a 1gig+. Tried to reduce this by clearing history but that didn’t do anything. Can’t see a clear reason or way to clear out stored data. I already did so successfully with the Chrome app.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Poor caching probably just like how Chrome is such a resource/battery hog. Try deleting and re-installing it, or better yet, you don't really need it.

Yeah deleted it and reinstalled magically down to around 200 meg- but still why so much. Might ditch it all together and just use Duck Duck Go.

Or, you know, just use Safari with an ad-blocker. Google is default search engine anyway.

        • Get Brave, adblock built in and it's based on chrome.

  • If the iOS App is anything like the Android App, well it includes the Chrome Browser inside.
And as mentioned, it's a memory hog with all the caching it does. As Google has become more and more evil, I find myself separating more and more from their services.

Normally you can't delete/uninstall these System Apps on Android Phones. I have root so I can delete it, but doing so could cause something to act funny down the line. What I've done is to actually Force Stopped, Disabled, and Clear Cache on both the Google App and Chrome Browser.

  • It's likely that you had a bunch of other google related apps, which are all from the same company.
And as I understand it, if you delete one app from that company, because of the way the iOS is configured, that app's cache will continue to be stored until all of that company's apps are removed from that phone

  • Do you use gmail?

  • Are you a sucker that bought a 16gb iPhone?

    • 64g phone. Spotify takes up 4g without any download playlists and cache cleared!!

Photos optimised for storage takes up 4.5g and on it goes.

      • Spotify takes up less than 150mb on my iPhone 6

        • Yeah I know there’s something not right. So I deleted and reinstalled it - everything is still there but now it’s just over 100mb. That’s one way to clear out caches and hidden files I guess.

  • Ok this is weird. I’ve struggled to get my storage down enough to install the lates iOS update 13.6.1. By deleting and reinstalling some bizarrely bloated apps like Spotify, google fb etc I managed to get it down from 63.2g down to 54g. Did the install overnight and found total storage to be 24g!!!? Nothing seems to be missing and the only difference is the “other” category of storage which was taking up a shiteload of space had virtually disappeared. WTF?
