Cheapest Butchers around Melbourne?

Hey there all, in a time where most of us are staying indoors and (hopefully) are cooking more meals, I thought it would be wonderful for us to share where we all get our meat from and where you've found hidden gems. I've been looking into buying meat straight from farms (2-3 week turnaround) to save money.

Where do you guys buy your meats?

Can you go out to more than 5km if the butcher is cheapest?

Footscray markets is about as cheap as I've seen lately.

Also, haven't been in a while but CWB Meats in Springvale used to be really good value.

Just be cautious that you often get what you pay for when it comes to meat. There is a Tasman Meats about a 10 minute walk from our house and the only thing I'll buy from them is bones for our dog. It's cheap, but the meat is terrible. I know a person that works for a restaurant owned by the same people as Tasman Meats, they source their meat elsewhere, which re-confirmed what I already thought of the place.

There are some good places around that will deliver, but there are minimum spends involved and unless you have a big freezer they aren't a lot of use.

Flinders + Co are good as are Peter Bouchier, but they aren't cheap as such.

I'd avoid anything from Cedar Meats despite the possible cheapness.

Asian owned butchers are almost always good.

The big Asian supermarket on Clayton Rd has a super meat section

Places all over Springvale, in and around Buckingham Avenue

Also consider the Dandenong Halal butchers and some of the guys inside the Dandy Market

    Glenhuntly Halal Meats

(NOT recommended Woolworths/Coles/Aldi - is anything truly fresh in those places?)

Costco is OK too but you need to buy a cow's worth of meat. I went there a couple of weeks ago, asked my child to pick up two packets of fresh packed minced beef, and we ended up with 2 packs of 4+KG each.

For when you just need someone with deep pockets to sue when things do go wrong. Cheap meat might be for a reason. Farming is one of those things where kilos of meat don't come for free.

      • You can't sue these monoliths, they'll ground you into the ground with their $500+/hour lawyers and QCs.

I watched my mince being prepared at Glenhuntly Halal and at Costco. Nice and fresh.
