What should I study during VIC lockdown?

Hi Ozbargainers,

30F based in Melbourne and wanting to further my education as the last time I did any study was back in Yr 12 (13 years ago)

I had zero interest in going to uni back then and just wanted to work and travel. I worked in the tourism industry for a few years and then went on to work in various industries (mainly administrative/CS roles) but have recently been let go due to Covid.

I want to use this time wisely and increase my chances of eventually getting another job when things start returning to normal.

Has anyone completed a Cert IV in Business online? Which uni did you go through?

Any advice/suggestions on this course or other courses would be great!!

You need to work backwards, what job do you want to get. Once you work that out, deciding on the course you need become much easier.

also, you need to consider the future prospects of your potential job

  • Very similar circumstances, currently doing that forced corona 'online study' for a 'free tafe' course

Avoid online only courses, only the BEST students and trainers cant be bothered leaving the house.

If you want an office based job, pick any officey course like business, accounting, etc
If you want something normal, pick whatever is taught closest to your house

Keep expectations rock bottom though, 6 months through this 12 months course and 60%+ have withdrawn 🤣

    • If you want something normal, pick whatever is taught closest to your house

And people wonder why they can't find a job after studying

      • Well whatever YOU study, YOU have to be able to use it, the school doesnt give 2 pineapples about helping you out

A cert IV in business sounds extremely vague, i'd try and find something more specific.

If you want a reliable job in most economic times then id look into studying a cert in Supply Chain management or something along those lines.

  • Some deep thinking required now to best approach the dog eat dog work place .

Aged care always going to have demand .

Teachers are overflowing and over qualified with a ton from overseas student economy taking any job available in the field starting from teacher aid instead of being checkout chicks .

  • As a business owner and member of a business association amongst other related things, I can only tell you that a certificate in business is not something myself or my peers recognise nor care about.

Almost none of us hires anyone with a business degree because… well, we created the business. Idea, risk and all.

  • Thanks all for the advice, gives me a bit to think about
