PSA - Entertainment Book Digital Version and Merchants Leaving The Program

Just be aware that merchants cancelling their participation in the Entertainment book program will have their vouchers removed from your app if you update it in-app. My wife and I both have the app on our phones. Mine is updated while hers is not. We were at a restaurant over the weekend and I could not find them listed in my app but she found it on hers. Thankfully we could still redeem the voucher using her phone. Sent an email to Entertainment book and got their below reply:-

Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately, XXXXXX Pizzeria has been cancelled as they have left the program. You should always update the app in order to have the most up to date content. Let me know if you have any other questions.

In the previous book form, voucher is still there even if the merchant cancelled during the year. As such I would advise not to update the app.

The only downside of not updating would be you wouldn't receive updates on any new merchants or restaurants.

    • Hmmmm true. One has to weight new merchants against those leaving.

  • If you don't update, then they could refuse the voucher, leaving you looking like an idiot at time of payment.

I'd rather update and know what is or isn't valid

Personally I've already got about $50 value out of the $55 purchase and only had it for a month 🙂

    • Yes, there could be a risk of voucher rejection but risk could be minimal as there will always be those who never update their app. In our case, when I mentioned Entertainment Book, the merchant didn't bat an eye or mention that they have left the program.

Don't know about you, but we sign up for the Entertainment Book for specific participating merchants. I would be pissed if those merchants left the program and the vouchers were removed half way through the subscription period. We don't use even 95% of all vouchers and if those specific merchants are not participating, we probably would not sign up for Entertainment Book.

I signed up while in a restaurant knowing I'd save about $40, and knew I'd get more than $15 value from the remaining 12 months.

I'm not going to go all Karen on someone because they removed themselves from the program and you haven't bothered to update your app in an attempt to cheat the system.

By pushing a store to provide the discount when they're not actually in the app only hurts the store, not Entertainment. Also makes you look like an idiot and ruins the whole experience.

update your app in an attempt to cheat the system

Would you also say that OP is cheating the system if they were using a physical voucher from the book?

          • @Chandler: Ah good ole "what ifs"…

          • @Chandler: @Chandler, thank you.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. How am I cheating the system? Rather, I see it as EB cheating me. I bought something which is now less than the time I got it.

            • @trex: Well actually I do see Spackbace's point. In purchasing the digital version, there would be mention in their TOS (probably buried) that the vouchers available are subject to change.

You'd probably also find in the book T&Cs that the vouchers may not be usable at some point due to the vendor leaving the program.

Having said all that, my issue with it is that the vendor's gotten their end of the deal (even if that is just exposure) but reneged on their end of the deal (giving the discount) because they've left the program.

And having said that, how would a vendor leave the program without jibbing someone - apart from say leaving the program and honouring discounts for the remaining validity period.

              • @Chandler: , Spackbace's point is that not updating the app is tantamount to cheating.

I agree, EB's TOS probably states vouchers are subject to change but it does not mean such change meets ACL (not that I intend to test this in court anyway). At least in the book version, vouchers won't just disappear and can be (cough) (cough) swapped.

        • @Spackbace, let's put this in your perspective; you signed up to save $40 at a restaurant but what if before you managed to use it, the voucher was taken off because the merchant cancelled their participation. Do you still think it's fair?

Don't get me wrong too, I didn't push the store to do anything. They made no mention at all they they have cancelled their EB participation. Had they said they no longer accepted EB, I would have just walked away and reported it to EB later on. Makes you look like an idiot for making assumptions.

I only got confirmation the next day from EB that the merchant cancelled their EB participation and this was why it didn't appear in my app.

Plenty of restaurants are refusing to take entertainment during COVID as well (increased costs, etc).

In past years i've been able to easily get the app's cost back in value. This time i'm a few months into the subscription and yet to recoup the cost.

    • Yes, fair enough, their business is badly affected and can't honour the discount. If they don't accept EB, then just report it to EB. My grouse is more on EB removing a digital voucher when they couldn't do it in the book version.

Anyway, my post is a Public Service Announcement. Not to vent.
