Having read this comment on a recent deal made me look into the Garmin Instinct Solar and got me really wanting one. So I did the normal OzB thing and spent hours of my life trying to find the best deal. Hopefully I did or the extra $2 I could have saved will haunt my waking hours.

Anyway, I found Onsport (an Aussie company) were having a sale on all their Garmin products (and more) and they also had 7% ShopBack across the entire site (CashRewards don't have it on sports tech unfortunately). This leads to a further cashback of $53.14 bringing the total down to a measly $705.91 delivered. That's almost as low as the non-Tactical/Camo/Surf editions.

This seems like a more 'industrial/military' version of the Fenix 6 solar. Would people agree with that? I haven't really looked into this much other than the link from OP

  • Its a bit cheaper on ebay ~$650-$700 AUD
Normal one is $290 AUD on ebay and the solar one is $100USD (~$150 AUD) more, according to Garmin.
So it must be around $450 - $500AUD max for the solar model tho. Better to wait for it on sale

  • The Tactical Black is also on sale if interested https://www.onsport.com.au/store/mens/sports-technology-men/…

    • That's the main link the post goes to.

  • stupid question, how much better are these than like a xiaomi band for exercising ?

    • Its the whole garmin ecosystem you buy into that makes it better than the xiaomi

    • this watch is more for navigation / gps

  • I reckon this will drop in dollars pretty quick. The only true bonus of this is the solar panel takes up heaps of the screen so you could probably get away without charging it conventionally if you spent heaps of time in the sun. I recjon it'll be $400 by black friday sales .

    • Solar charging is not a thing. Solar Instincts, according to dcrainmaker.com, have like +50% power savings, due to new GPS and heart rate hardware. I have previous (non-solar) Instinct. Still, not a deal breaker, given old Instinct can do a week of use on one charge. Another point, I chose Instinct over FR645 because of display contrast/visibility. I wonder if Solar Instinct, with added solar layer over main display, is reducing that contrast.
