Trade in Your Used PS4 Controller Get $45-$75 in Cash at Cex

730

Get anywhere between $45-$75 in cash when you trade in your PS4 controller. The amount depends on the colour of the controller so please visit link for more details. With the current gen coming to an end and Sony announcing that PS4 controllers are not compatible with PS5 games, I think this is a pretty good trade in deal.

Cex stores are located only in NSW, QLD and ACT. Store location can be found at

they pay and charge stupid prices and wonder why they're going out of business

    • +4

      They're going out of business?

      • ive had about three of the ones near me close down

    • -1

For this particular deal its pretty good as I am actually profiting by selling my alpine green dualshock 4 for $65 and I bought it for $49. Also its worn pretty bad from playing fifa and PES which can wear out your controller more than other games, so I don't mind selling it and getting a new one later when it becomes cheap again.

      • +5

        Who are you replying to?

      • Sold my 2 dualshocks just then. (had 3 which I was going to sell 2 of) They did some testing. My alpine green one got refused they claimed that there was drift in the left stick, which never happened to me when I used it. So ended up selling the gt and the black one for $28 and $52 which was decent but was hoping to sell the alpine green one which would have fetched more. All in all pretty happy :)

    • They both pay more and charge less for the same items than any other store (EB Games etc).

ebay may fetch you a better price, but they have 12% fees and you have to list it and take photos and deal with scammers etc.

      • Please, you just steal someone else's photos. Steal the photos from the completed listing that sold for the most.

    • I was in my local Cex yesterday afternoon.

Their stuff isn't horrendously cheap nor is it terribly expensive.

      It's just averagely priced.

I still get lots of cheap stuff from cash converters usually but as for these guys, it's like they look up all their prices on eBay and just leave it at that.

Their store is handy for buying/selling all those unwanted DVDs we all own though.

I see your first in line for cex (creepy winky face)

  • Has anyone used Cex online before? $60 for my Gen 1 Camo sounds very tempting.

    • +6

Yes, traded in some old Wii remotes, though I did it for store vouchers. It was pretty quick and easy. They also cover the cost of shipping to them

    • +1

Yep. I've traded in a number of items for cash and credit with no issues. I first used them in the UK regularly, where they are huge. They offer free postage for items that you sell.

  • Do they check if the controller works?

    • +1

When I traded my controller in they just did a quick test to see if the controller connects to the console.

  • What I want to know is, do I need a DS4 controller to play PS4 games on my PS5?

    • +2

You won't need it. The DS5 will work with PS4 games on the PS5, but the DS4 won't work with PS5 games.

    • -2

dont think ds4 is gonna be compatible with ps5

      • +5

They’ve already confirmed that the DS4 works on the PS5, but only if you’re playing PS4 games

Which seems fairly reasonable to me

        • Ah fair

        • So if you play two player FIFA 2019 on your PS4 and plan on playing it on your PS5 too, then keep both your PS4 controllers.

  • +2

How do they make money off this?

    • It's a great trade in price, higher than I expected considering you can get a brand new controller for less than $50 during sales.

If you are thinking of trading, I would do this asap before they catch on and reduce the trade in price.

    • Maybe the CEX prices also inflated?

      • +3

Yes, I traded my Wii and a bunch of other stuff in a few months ago, and the lady told me that because of covid, there's been lots of price inflation for games and stuff so I got a higher trade in price

      Loss leader.
      …and then loss follower

    • +1

Look at the prices they are selling them for. That's what people are buying them for right now. CEX sets prices based on supply and demand.

  • -1

Does it have to be fully working? I think i have a used one somewhere that has issues with a few of the buttons

    • +3

      They should be fully working

    • +3

I don't understand why would they give you $45 for a broken controller???? It needs to be working…

      • Thought it's like the EB trade in deals where they accept anything. I guess i'll keep those for next time they do it, hopefully..

        • +1

EB definitely shouldn't give you full price for broken stuff. any trades have SKUs for "broken" versions

  • +1

Wow, some of the prices are crazy. But it goes to show, normal limited editions aren't that special but it's the really random colour combinations which are worth more: https://au.webuy.com/search?stext=dual%20shock%204

  • +4

Kind of funny how uglier ones fetch more money.

  • Thanks OP.

I have a V1 Dualshock that came with my launch PS4 originally. It's the second controller that I only started using in the last year cause I traded in the first controller to ebgames as part of the PS4 to PS4 Pro upgrade bundle last year. The analog sticks have started wearing out.

The website says I can get $28 bucks for it. Might give it a shot.

    • +1

Sell on ebay for a lot more with V1, trust me, I sold one for around $58 by memory

      • +1

Interesting. Thanks for the tip. Take your upvote.

  • Genuine question, how do they expect to make money out of this? Because who would buy 2nd hand PS4 controllers at (it would have to be) a higher price than what CEX buys them off us?

    • maybe they know something we don't PS4 controllers to be used on Ps5? who knows

    • +2

Look at the prices they are selling them for. That's what people are buying them for right now. CEX sets prices based on supply and demand.

  • +3

They're really good for finding genuine consoles and controllers/accessories, such as PS3s, Wiiu/Wii accessories, 3DS, pre-owned games (generally cheap).

I wouldnt go and sell an Xbox One X there, or buy a PS4 1 TB (or current console models) as prices arn't all that.

Having said that, i've saved alot by buying the the older model stuff compared to ebay

  • +2

Xbox controllers look to be decent cash trade in pricing as well: https://au.webuy.com/search?stext=xbox%20one%20controller

  • +1

    WHY?

  • +1

Dammnn, could make a tidy profit on my well used Berry Blue controller for $75 cash…

  • +2

I remember dumping over 15 prepaid phones and modems to cex when optus ran the free Netflix promo. They gave me 50c more than I paid for the stuff, plus I got like 4 years worth of Netflix free.

    • Yeah I used that scam.. I mean offer lol. And ever since have used them for awesome prices on all my old electronics. Last month I sold two PS3 Guitar hero guitars and they gave me $40 each cash. The next week I went in there to sell some old GPU's and hard drives and the guitars were listed at $35! Oops. No idea how they make money.

  • anything for Xbox controllers?

  • Cex sells your controller double to what they paid for it. Prices fluctuate depending on how much stock they have.

    • Yep - stock happens to be down at the moment. I seriously doubt I'd be able to flog my berry blue for more than $75 anyway (used) so I'm considering taking advantage of that.

  • Looks like a typo?

  • How can I sell games and console from VIC? I clicked i want to sell button and it gets added to cart.

  • -1

Do they want a used XB1 controller??

  • Thanks! Got these basically brand new PS4 controllers just sitting around doing nothing. Now I can actually sell them for more than what I paid for them during sales.

  • Anyone have any experience with their online trade in process? They advertise they pay for shipping and then transfer the money to you.

    • I just put through my online order. You can generate an auspost label for shipping and yes it’s free. I can report back after I have gone through the process of that helps

      • Can we sell online even if we are from VIC as well? I have some xbox stuff and price seems too good.

        • +1

Sorry not too sure, I’m in QLD…but I can’t see why not if you can manage to post it.

    • Same, just put in my og xbox one with Kinect and 10 2-5 year old games, $300 of credit.
Believe OG xbox one is like $80 trade in at EB

  • I can't believe some of the ugly camo ones sell for more than the 20th Anniversary Controller.

  • CeX have some silly prices. I sold them a PS4 pro about 2 months ago during the easing of restrictions for about $480 cash, which is way more than I paid during black friday sales.

  • If you sell a console 'unboxed' e.g. an old PS4 500GB, do you need to include the controller or any cables with it? It seems unclear on their website.

    Edit: Found the answer

"Playstation 4 consoles must come with an official Playstation 4 controller at all grades. Third-party controllers cannot be accepted when paired with Playstation 4 consoles when selling to CeX."

  • Heads up, if your bar code is faded they won’t take it.
I took one a while ago and they made some excuse that the button is sticking but happily took the controller which the bar code was visible.
EB are great as they take all ps4 controllers (that I’ve traded in) but no cash only store credit.

    • CeX scan the back of the controller when you trade it in.

  • Who's paying $90 for a second hand PS4 controller?…. That said I might flip a couple of the controllers I bought for $22.50 when I traded in my broken ones to EB Games as part of that deal last year.

  • +2

We use to have Cex here. At first the Cex was good and Cex was cheap and Cex was fun. But then the local Cex went bad. Cex wasn't worth it anymore. Finally the local Cex shut up shop and went away. Now Cex is not known here. I miss good Cex.

  • What does the controller’s condition have to be? My gold controller has a little scuff on the front. Might just send it in and see what happens.

    • +1

I think as long as it largely works they don't care much about aesthetics.

      • Brilliant. Good to know. Works perfectly so will see how it goes.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Managed to sell the PS3, 3DS and 2 controllers. expecting $430 all up. Gonna try send this thing tomorrow to post office.

  • +1

Wow been struggling to sell some PS4 dualshock controllers for less than these prices… thanks Op!!

  • Not that you need any more, but plus one to the reasons to join the #PCMasterRace

    • But you can use a DS4 to play some games in a more superior scheme than mouse &kb ;) even on a PC.

      Also #flickstickmasterrace

  • I'm so confused, rrp $78 why would I buy from them for $92 for a controller

trade-in wise this is a steal

    • Price has gone down for most of these controllers now.

      • do you have links plz cuz I'm looking for a genuine one for my pc

        • Sorry I meant that the trade-in price has depreciated.

  • What an excellent, easy process. Really impressed. Thanks OP for sharing this one.

  • Just wanted to come back to this post and say that I received the cash for the controllers last night. Althought, they've now reduced the prices. Thanks for this one OP.

    • I got paid the price they agreed to when I submitted the order. Assume you did also? Would make sense that they have done down since.
