Wifi Router sorted by area coverage - alternatives to Asus RT-AC58U

I bought a second hand Asus RT-AC58U for $50 as it has smartphone USB tethering. We use less than 100GB (sometimes as low as 50GB) a month. Occasionally we connect to HFC NBN via Launtel daily usage charging (50/20 usually).

The HFC NTD box/connection is on the East side of the bottom level of a two-story house. I have an unreliable WiFi connection in the middle bedroom of second floor. There is hardly any WiFi connection in the West side second floor bedroom or master bedroom.

Without going to the expense of a mesh router is there a better WiFi router with smartphone USB tethering which will reach the top floor master bedroom?

What are some routers sorted by coverage area?

  • Why not just move the phone you use for tethering closer to where you need it?

    • Because when I use NBN it needs to be close to the connector.

  • Why not get another Asus router and connect it as an iMesh Node? That's what I do, I have two RT-AC68Us - one as the main router and the other as a iMesh node - I get great wifi coverage in our large two storey house with no dead spots
