Edit>

so found this extra info at http://www.globaltefl.uk.com who are running this course ..

TEFL and TESOL are basically the same thing. The only difference is that TEFL is the term widely used in the UK and TESOL is more common in USA, Canada and Australia.

How will I be assessed on the TEFL/TESOL course?
* There are assignments to be completed as you cover each module. There will also be a list of assignments to be during the course. You need to complete each assignment and they need to be sent to your trainer. The trainer will grade them and send you feedback on your work usually within 5 days. Our trainers will provide you with full support. Feedback is comprehensive and will include careful comments on your work and assignments, together with suggestions and recommendations. The assignments consist of a range of different tasks that may include a 500 word essay on a topic assigned by your trainer, lesson plans on different skills, analysis of classroom management situations, grammar exam and a final exam.

What happens if I fail an assignment?
* We have a very high success rate. Should you fail an assignment you will be given a second chance of taking it. If you fail the 2nd assignment you fail the course.

So now my comments about this deal ..

I know when I've previously looked into it you needed to have some form of Bachelor level degree. I don't remember anything to do with TEFL courses though, so this may be a work around for those that dont have the bachelor degree.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge regarding this?

    • I did find this link ..
      http://www.statravel.com.au/teaching-english-courses.htm

      Q) Do I need a degree to teach English overseas?
      A) While having a degree allows you to get a working visa in more countries, there are many countries where a degree is not required.

      Q) I don’t have any teaching experience, can I still teach English overseas?
      A) Yes. While teaching experience can be beneficial in finding work, it’s certainly not essential. The most important attribute to any employer is that you’re keen and have a good understanding of the English language (non-native speakers will need to demonstrate this).

      Q) What’s the difference between TEFL and TESOL?
      A) There’s very little difference between the two. TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language and TESOL for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The important fact here is that employers overseas will happily accept either a TEFL or TESOL qualification.

      Q) Will I need to speak the local language?
      A) No. In fact many schools prefer that you know very little, if any at all! You will however get the chance to learn the local language while you’re there, and some schools even offer free tutoring.

      Q) Are there any eligibility requirements for the TEFL courses?
      A) Yes. You need to be a native or near native English speaker. If English is not your first language, call us for more information.

This next question if buying through the STA website - but least it shows some countries where degree's aren't needed
      Q) What countries can you help me find work with your free job placement service?
      A) If you’re over 18, we can help you find work in Japan, China, South Korea, Ecuador*, Indonesia* and the Czech Republic* (* degree not required).

    • I taught ESL for 7 years o/s + helped run an ESL school there. Although the government of the country we were in did give visas for anyone who held any qualification (e.g. this one), we would not accept anyone who didn't hold the CELTA or equivalent (there's an American equivalent, can't remember its name).
And to be honest I wouldn't have felt well enough prepared if the course I did hadn't included real life teaching with real life students & experienced qualified teachers there to feedback on my teaching. That's where this course fails.

  • Compared to traditional face to face TEFL courses this is cheap (less than 10% of typical cost). As long as it is a recognised provider and you can be disciplined to compete the course on your own this is very attractive proposition. I would like to know a bit more about assessment and exams eg submit electronically (assumption) or organised through a 3rd party locally?

  • +2

Traditional TESOL certified courses are generally well regarded because they require lots of face-time practicing teaching students. I don't trust a TEFL course being "accepted" as validly when this wasn't required.

  • .

  • I looked at teaching English in Korea for a few years, I found that there were schools willing to take people with no experience, but you were payed a basic allowance, and with the high cost of living in Korea this may be a little hard. A friend did end up going and meeting his wife there. Now makes a good living IT contracting there.

    • so you're telling me Koreans can maintain 250+ APM but can't setup their own computers??

      • -5

        hahaha they have tiny brain?

  • did a bit of an update to the main post .. explains some of the extra info about the course ..

i'm gonna hit up a couple of my mates who do English in Korea and Thailand and see what they gotta say about this as well

    • +1

I read that from their website too Cereal which is why i raised the question because for me it is still not clear about assessment. They say 'may include'…i just want to know if i need to do a video of myself teaching a class or if the are all pretty much written. I note some modules mention video-is that video materials or assessment of you? If you email them (i was tempted but decided not too) then let us know their response. Basically for the cost it is dirt cheap and will be almost certainly be accepted in most of Asia. If not then good preparation for you if you go directly to teaching or do a more expensive course. good luck

  • +1

Don't expect this to be a valid qualification to teach in any Australian or other English-speaking country's school. You need a recognised qualification such as a Cambridge CELTA or a Cert. IV in TESOL which both cost considerably more ($2500+), and both of which require a Bachelor's degree prior to commencement.

Having said that, teaching overseas as a way to supplement income for a holiday is a great idea for someone just out of uni. Be careful when looking at schools, though. Some places in some countries have very dodgy operating practices, such as not paying you for months on end, and firing you before the first year is up so they don't have to pay for the advertised BONUS upon completion of the first contract. For those considering working overseas, Google is your friend…do your research before making the jump. Good luck!

    • Edit of above: you don't need a Bachelor to commence (or even complete) the CELTA or Cert IV's around. You do, however, need a Bachelor plus these to teach at an accredited school in Australia.

      • +2

Why teach in Australia when you can go do it overseas and have more fun ? :P
Sure you're away from family and friends .. but my mates have been having so much fun and good times overseas .. depends on your age and other life commitments

      • Sorry, you needed one when I did it. As others have said, though, it'll be tough getting a visa in many countries without one.

  • +1

I taught in Japan for 4 years. In Japan if you want to work F/T you need a uni degree for the visa. otherwise you can only get a Part time/ visitor visa and work up to 25 hours (might have changed since then as I left 6 years ago before Nova collapsed).

back to the deal, this is a cheap course and may help you score a job if you are fresh off the boat with no experience compared to someone else fresh off the boat with no experience and no TEFL cert.

Also some employers (such as private firms) want people with a "teaching" qualification. whereas if you work for an english school you will do an amount of training (usually a week).

  • It's funny how every word has a capital letter

    • +2

Funny too that there's simple grammar mistakes in their ad:
"The 150 HOUR Master Certification Course consist of"
"can be completed in as little as two months or take your time"
"Global TEFL have connections in many countries worldwide and provides job placements"
Maybe I could proofread for them?

      • I was concerned by all the mistakes as well…

In no uncertain terms: this should be avoided at all costs by anyone interested in teaching English.

    1. There is no such thing as an "Internationally Recognised Online TEFL Course:. The closest thing is a Cambridge CELTA or a Trinity CertTESOL. Put this on your resume and it'll go in the bin anywhere you'd actually want to work. Anyone who gives you an interview would've taken you on without this anyway.

    2. I'd like to know how Global TEFL affords to pay their 'highly qualified trainers', what qualifications they have or where they get them from. The highly qualified ELT trainers I know (and I know a few) would make $84 in a morning and would be ashamed to be associated with this lot.

    3. There are hundreds of employers trying to fill positions overseas, you don't need the assistance of these cowboys to get a job in ELT overseas. I can guarantee you a job somewhere overseas within 24 hours if you like (if you do happen to be interested go to TEFL.net and subscribe to their overseas jobs mailing list and you'll get an idea of what's on offer). Chances are it won't be a job you'd want to take though and I highly doubt many of their positions on offer are much better.

    4. No mention at all of degree-level qualifications. There aren't many places in the world where you don't need a degree either to get a visa or to be legally eligible for a teaching job (although it IS mentioned on the globalTEFL website, maybe this is an oversight of the group deal company)

If you want to know more about TEFL qualifications take a look at this which is a lot more accurate than an STA travel website:
    http://www.tefl.net/tefl-courses/faq.htm
(the first three sections on the page above in particular are really worth a read before you part with your money)

If you're interested in knowing more about teaching English generally, I can suggest that you read the Practice of English Language Teaching by Jeremy Harmer. You can pick it up for about 40 or 50 bucks from Amazon or thebookdepository. It will teach you as much if not more than this course and represents a much better investment in a career in English teaching. It's also the main coursebook for the CELTA which is a qualification which IS worth doing.

The ELT industry is plagued with hundreds of shonky 'training companies' knocking out "internationally recognised TEFL courses". They are little better than online degree providers who will send you a pretty university degree certificate in the post in exchange for 50 bucks and are a curse on the the efforts of legitimate training providers trying to professionalise an industry which still struggles with a reputation for scams and rip-off operators.

    I neg this.

Too good to be true. Ridiculous price for a course with no international recognition.

As chickentaste has said - CELTA or do a full bachelor degree/masters course. Masters can be completed in two years part time (you can work OS while doing it via correspondence). CELTA is the minimal requirement for any ESL teacher.

+1 for Jeremy Harmer and +5 for chickentaste.

Source: 13 years ESL experience - Bachelor Education/Arts, Masters Education (TESOL). Worked OS for 7 years, 6 years in Aust. Now Director of Studies who has to hire people with certifications that are not recognised…. getting sick of the trash that walks through the door.

  • I asked something about the course and why it was listed as a master course and received the following reply.

    Hello,

Our course is a Master TEFL 150 hour certificate. When you successfully complete our course, you will receive an internationally recognised certificate in teaching English as a foreign language. If you are asking if this a university masters degree or confused by it, then the answer is no it is not. Our course offered on deals.com.au is the highest teacher training that you can obtain at Global Language Training. Hope this answers your questions and hope to see you in our course.

    Then asked..

ok but what is actually on the certificate cause I dont see many
places offering 'master tefl' courses on google. What is the
difference between the introduction course and the master course
employability wise as both are 'tefl certificates'.

The difference in our certificates is the number of hours. Our courses are 40, 60, 120 and 150 hours. Our 150 hour course offers Teaching English to Young Learners and CLIL - Content Language Integrated Learning. You future employer will want you to have a complete and comprehensive course. This of course increases your chances of employment.

So basically it could have 'Master of the universe TEFL' written on it for all I know because it doesnt seem to have any kind of legitimacy that I can find. Also if you google their URL there are so many links to bargain websites with the 85% off deal. I don't know what percentage of people pay full price but it seems like you could have got a massive discount from various places.
