  • 1024 x 768 is NOT HD

    • True - HD is just a term manufacturers can freely throw around and it can have multiple underlining meanings. That being said, a TV which can support HD resolutions and nearly fully display them (you won't get a true 16:9 720p picture on a 1024x768 native resolution TV) can still be a good fit for people, simply based on the fact that the human eye at between 4 and 6 feet will still see a detailed picture far superior to that of SD resolution. The picture on my Panasonic 42" 1024x768 TV is superb and I don't really care how little I'm missing out on.

Manufacturers will have you believe that 1920x1080 resolution is the only one suitable for HD video, but if you do the math, taking into account viewing distance, pixel size and visual acuity, you soon see that most households are wasting a good deal of cash on a "Full HD" TV when they could have the same experience on a lower resolution TV.

      • Agree 100%.

The "Full HD" hype is ridiculous. Play 720 or 1080 content on a HD panel and a Full HD panel, sit at a comfortable viewing distance and you can't tell the difference between the two panels.

    • Officially it is.. it's even on Wikipedia!!
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution

I have read somewhere (Engadget possibly) that the pixel size difference between a 1080 and 768 screen at less than 40" is virtually undetectable from an average viewing distance.. this fails that test in that it's a 42" but is close..

Perhaps what you meant to say was "1024 x 768 is NOT FULLHD"

    • 1024 x 768 is obviously not true 16:9 HD but it is still considered HD (the pixels are rectangular to fill the 16:9 panel).

      • I thought the minimum for HD is 720p, i.e. 720 scanlines. Does the horizontal resolution matter? Otherwise it would need to be at least 1280x720 to be considered HD, and it has to somehow compress 1280 px of visual data into 1024 px…

        • Any panel has to process a feed to fit its native resolution - that's why it's not only the panel resolution that is important but the processing technology behind it. When you're talking about 1280 x 720, you're referring to square pixels. 1024 x 768 on a 16:9 panel uses rectangular pixels and the display would definitely be better than SD, so I'm fairly sure it's considered HD. Panasonic 42" plasmas use 1024 x 768 and they still look great for movies, TV, etc - probably not so great for HTPCs where 1:1 pixel mapping is desirable.

  • any reviews?

  • I don't think 1024 x 768 even meets the "HD Ready" marketing name let alone HD. Not much point having a HD tuner if the panel can't really manage digital SD even.

  • Anyone know if this TV has component input for HD gaming on the XBOX 360? Cheers.

  • Hi .. I was just about to go to Big W and layby this tv .. But after reading this maybe I shouldnt?

Any input would be great before I go spending all my money

    Thanks BusyBear
