    Not HDMI 2.1

  • What? All hdmi cables are not created equal?!?

  • Size?

  • Question? (serious, not trolling)
If the video and audio signals that travel along this type of cable are digital signals, what difference does having "gold plated" connectors on each end make? An analogue signal maybe (at the margin) but digital?
There is so much marketing nonsense made with cables that I am surprised that more skeptics don't call them out.

Although my domain isn't really in cables (I'm only speaking from the perspective of electronics engineering), gold plating only really matters if you care about oxidation and when you're interfacing high speed signals in sockets that are sensitive to voltages (usually low ones). In such a case you often see ENIG (electroless nickel immersion gold) which in the industry is usually what they refer to as 'gold plating' being used. In practice, silver plating and nickel plating or other types are just as good. Some cheaper straight steel jackets and connectors often fail due to oxidation and connectors fatiguing over time.

However, in cheaper products they may employ brass rather than gold and this actually is more prone to oxidation over time. Added to the fact that they often only plate the outer jacket rather than bother with the connectors, functionally it makes little difference since the effect of oxidation causes failure of the signal rather than degradation.

However, contrary to the popular belief that HDMI 'works' or it 'not at all' you can still experience intermittency due to poor contact, interference from improper grounding and voltage drop caused by resistance in the contacts when HDMI delivers power.

In short, gold plating makes a difference if you're bothering to cycle a cable a lot (plug it in and out a fair few times) and want a stellar connection. But, rather than the choice of materials used to construct the connectors and the plating I would rather they invest it in a nicer jacket to resist bending stress, better core material and stronger adhesives on the damn stickers with 'HDMI' written on them that tend to pop off straight after you buy a cable.

  • Another left hand hammer moment….

    The description suggests that its a 10ft cable - that's basically 3m.
However the advertised price is not for the 3m cable. The 3m cable actually costs $15.99 - minus a 5% discount with code.

    • misleading and def not a deal

    • They edited the title to clarify it is the shorter length - but still says 10ft in description.

This in no way shape or form is a deal/bargain
