  • How is it compared to 920 or 950 ?

  • +19

How does it compare to the xiaomi one?

    • Not much difference in my experience.
However, few people had bad experience with old cheap Deebot (not Deebot 900) and you see bad reviews.
Also, there is a stronger Xiaomi fan club.

  • +5

Hope its better than the N79 I bought in one of the previous Ebay deals. I would have to say its one of the dumbest pieces of technology I own. It bumps into everything and can never find its way back to the dock. I basically walk around with it, steering it with my foot, which kind of defeats the purpose.

    • +4

I bought the same one and it's not that bad for me. I knew it would be dumb as it has no mapping. If you watch it, it will infuriate you with its back and forth over the same area lol.

We just ignore it and it really does get everything done in the end.

We also had issues with it finding the dock, but we've since moved it to a more open area and it finds it easy.

We usually stick it on 'Auto' for a couple of hours and then finish off in Edge mode which is really quite good and getting all the bits in hard to reach places.

The catcher is always full so it's doing something!

Would be good to have a "smart" one with room mapping but this does the job.

      • +3

I was happy with mine too - I also knew it didn't do any mapping and wasn't smart but it picks up so much everyday it's so amazing.

For the price I couldn't complain - it's nice to schedule when you're not home and come home and empty it out everyday. Picks up all the hair and cat litter and does make me want to have a smarter robovac too but can't justify spending $600-800 for a decent one - for $150 I think it's money well spent

Watching it trying to find its way back to the dock is horrible though but mine has always found it's way home (unless it gets stuck)…

        • Yep same, for $150 it does an amazing job

    • The Deebot N79 is good… I've been using it for a few months and can't fault it. It sounds like you spent $150-200 on a robovac, not knowing what features it offers, expecting it to have the features of a $400-600 robovac.

  • +6

i bought a Deebot from Aldi last time and i agree, it's "dumb". Returned it. I'm still waiting for a good deal on Xiaomi

    • -7

I'm afraid you'll find out that Xiaomi is also dumb. Why do you think it is better?

      • +12

I have a xiaomi gen 1 and I dont know why you think its dumb. Does a decent job.

        • +8

Agreed - Gen 1 Xiaomi is still top shelf.

          • +2

@bemybubble: +1. Mine is awesome. Works really well around obstacles, map of its movements nightlights this. Clean exceptionally well for the price.

      • -4

        I have Xiaomi S50.
        My friend got Deebot 900.
        Same functionality.
Both robots are not smart compared to iRobot but do the job fine.
However, Deebot 900 is cheaper than Xiaomi S50.
That's why I wonder how Xiaomi is better?

        • +3

The VSLAM system xiaomi s50 and deebot 9XX has would easily keep up when it comes to navigation compared to camera based iRobots
To be fair, irobot does have a better patented brush system on carpet. But it's really only down hill from there when it comes to price, money for value, etc.
Rule of thumb, if you have mainly carpet, get irobot, otherwise s50 or deebot 9XX series

          • @berry580: The features that I really miss:
            * Xiaomi can detect carpets to increase suction but can't avoid carpets during mopping
            * Xiaomi can create zones but can't get zone directions via voice assistant (officially)

iRobot can do it all and also can clean itsself! But that is $1000+

      • +16

You're kidding right? The Xiaomi has LDS and maps out the entire environment that it's cleaning. It literally draws a map of the room and tracks where it is relative to the dock. I have the gen 1 version and it's still going hard. Finally got it hooked up to Home Assistant this week and created an automation rule to clean up every 7 days but only when there's no one home. I wouldn't consider it all that 'dumb'…

        • Xiaomi mapping is better than Deebot mapping?
          https://www.ecovacs.com/au/deebot-robotic-vacuum-cleaner/DEE…

          • +5

@maxedin: My comment isn't really about Xiaomi being better or worse than deebot. It was merely a reaction to your comment about the Xiaomi product being 'dumb'.

        • +7

Level up your Home Assistant automation and get it to go to the bin and wait for you to empty it after every clean. Hit me up if you need some yaml inspo.

          • +1

@bbqandbargains: That's genius! Will definitely reach out if I can't figure out how to get it to go to a coordinate

            • +2

@silo: No worries. Hint - get the FloleVac app to get the coordinates for a target point.

          • @bbqandbargains: +1 for more yaml work. Hell I'd love more tutorials. Always struggled and basically abandoned it since I moved. Might have to fire up the old Pi and install the latest version and start fresh..

            • +1

@Maz78: It's a steep learning curve. I work as a BA so I already had a sound foundation of programming. It was easy to pick up for me.
PM me any questions and I'll see if I can write something up. I don't host my config on GitHub or anything, but there are plenty that do. The home Assistant forums are also full of good examples.

        • My logic:
Deebot 900 has the same functionality as Xiaomi S50 (though Xiaomi S50 is more expensive)
@clartan2015 says Deebot 900 is dumb, so the same would apply to Xiaomi S50 then, because they have the same functionality.

Personally, for me Xiaomi is fine but
          * it can't avoid carpets while mopping
          * can't ask to clean specific zone via voice assistant
iRobot is definitely smarter but much more expensive.

      • +1

Xiaomi roborock gen 1 and above have mapping features and don't just go around randomly hoping to pick up dirt

        • Deebot 900 doesn't go randomly. It works the same as Xiaomi.
Seems nobody could explain why Xiaomi is smarter. Just a user preference.

  • +10

I'm confused RE: some of these comments. We bought this exact model from Aldi the last time it was on sale and it is definitely not dumb. It maps the room and indicates where the vaccum has and has not been. It continues the cycle until the whole area it can access has been cleaned. It does a better job than we thought it would. It picks up HEAPS of stuff. We have two dogs with short fine hair, it'll even pick that up! I perhaps wouldn't use it as the main vaccum, but for maintenance it's brilliant. The mopping thing is a gimmick feature though, I haven't really seen it make much of a difference when it's mopping.

  • +1

    How loud are they?

    • I would say similar noise to a hand held dust buster. There are 2 suck settings, the higher suck is louder.

I bought one of these last time, and was kind of expecting to return it, but kept it as it seems to get the job done.

Setting it up with a modern phone that connects to wifi via 5Ghz was not possible in my experience. The Ozmo 900 only supports 2.4Ghz. I tried all sorts of things (from moving the phone away from wifi forcing it to drop back to 2.4Ghz), but in the end, the only thing that worked was setting it up using an old 2.4Ghz only phone. After that you can then use your 5Ghz/2.4Ghz dual band phone without issue.

I have found that it occasionally runs out of battery power before it gets back to the charging station.

It has also gotten lost and not been able to get back to the charging station.

I am guessing the software gets updated making it work better, but haven't seen any updates come through on the phone.

One thing that I will need to look into to find out if it is a fault - after allowing the vac to fully charge, I have found if I switch of the power point, the vac does not seem to hold the charge, meaning the mains needs to be left on all the time (and presumably it is constantly charging).

It can be used as a mop also, with water being added. I havent done this yet. I would like to know if detergent can be added to the water, to clean the floor better than water alone would do.

Hope these findings are useful for someone.

It creates a new map each time it is used. Sometimes the map as it appears on the phone is very accurate (you can work out the shape of your house by looking at the map it creates). Other times the map looks like it has been drawn by a drunk draftsman. Would be good if it could save the map, and use it each time (but I guess if things get moved around, that may not be a good idea).

      • +2

It does save the map… You must let it complete a full clean of the house and not disrupt it and let it complete the whole cycle for it to store the map.

Your literally using it with factory settings each time without going through the correct process, which would make it a complete nightmare.

Once the map has saved, you can select spot cleans and draw up the areas or tell it to clean areas it designates (breaks down your house into zones)

It also has the ability to digitally set 'no go' zones etc.

You should also not switch it off at the power point, it needs to remain on all the time. The reason yours is going flat is because the unit has its own power switch, under the top that opens near the dust bin.

It should also not go flat getting back to the station, I'd say it's because you've not let it complete a full cycle (point above) so it configures itself correctly.

Recall it says to not use anything but water in the manual.

All in all, I'd recommend it and have loved having it for the price!

      • It definitely saves the map - looks like you’re doing something wrong xD let it complete a full cycle

  • +1

This looks like similar features to the gen one Xiaomi roborock. With added features of virtual walls on the aldi one.

The s50 is an improvement of this though, because it adds rooms functions etc.

  • +1

How would this communicate with your smart home? Zigbee? The only description I can find is wifi.

Also it seems to have 22% 1 star reviews on Amazon so think I'm going to pass.

    • The answer to your question is Wifi.

  • +3

For anyone interested doesn’t do well in choice, only Kogan one got lower:

    CHOICE Expert Rating
    39%
What is the CHOICE Expert Rating

    Good points
    • Very good at cleaning corners and edges.
    •Stairs detection.
•Automatic return to charging station just before the battery goes flat.
    •Comes with a mopping function.
•No problems with tassels on rugs.
    Bad points

•Poor at picking up dirt from hard floor.
•Poor at picking up dirt from carpet.
    •Borderline at pet hair removal

    • +1

Which Kogan? I have the G30 which is $279 - seems to do everything this one does except that mapping function. It's been great. Would be interesting to see a comparison on the battery.

The Kogan LX8 would also be interesting to see the comparisons on this Aldi one. Kogan still comes in cheaper.

    • Interesting. Thanks for that. How did the xiaomi fare in those tests

      • Definitely seems better, best one gets 70% but not sure if even current model Xiaomi Mi Robot SDJQR02RR. Also members give it great reviews.

  • There's is not much actual information about this item I've heard it's good .

  • +1

I got this the last time and it’s a piece of shit. Never worked properly and mopping stopped working. Hardly used it 5 times and the battery won’t hold charge anymore. It’s actually going to their service partner tomorrow for repairs.

I also had the Stirling version from a few years ago, it was great. Too bad the battery gave up after a few years.

  • +1

So if I decided to try and buy this, how does one go about it? Do you have to go super early and queue? (If so how early are we talking?) Any hints?

    • I keen too know too I'll be there at 7 to get one if I have too. 60 day refund to try and I've heard they're really good. Despite what others have to say

  • What would be a good model to buy for vacuum + mop within $1000 budget?

    • Roborock S6 MaxV

      • Is MaxV different from regular S6?

        • It is. MaxV comes with dual camera, better suction and multi level mapping. Not sure what other differences exist, but these seem to be the main ones.

      • cant find anyone selling it in australia. only the normal S6 model.

        • it's coming fam, enter the comp with my referral :) countdown included. Good luck!

          • +1

@capslock janitor: yeah i got to know earlier today from their customer support. already joined the competition earlier today :)

  • I got this on the last sale. It's not too bad for the price.

My battery doesn't hold charge if I switch off the charging dock though. I have to have it charged just before the clean otherwise battery drains over the next day or two.

  • +1

Grabbed this from the last time they sold it.

My thoughts are that I think its worth the price -
    1) it maps your home and becomes more accurate over time as it continues to map
    2) picks up a decent amount of dirt and hasn't had problems moving from floors to rugs to carpet
    3) Links up with the app which provides you the map where you can see where it has cleaned and also set up virtual barriers
    4) Notifies you if it ever gets stuck on something in the app
    5) Works with google assistant

    Things to be aware of:
    1) Sometimes if it gets stuck and you move it too far away from the spot it was in it might get "lost" and not know where it is. It will then have to redo its mapping of the area
    2) if you have a really big home it won't have enough charge to do it in one go
    3) if you are expecting this to replace a regular vacuum - it does not. It is great for maintenance meaning that you don't have to do a proper vacuum yourself as frequently.

Personally, I haven't used the mopping function however I've read reviews where they said its just kind of like a wet cloth being run across your floors.

  • I have no knowledge of these things, but this seems to be a good price - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/ecovacs-deebot-600-roboti…. Presently 38% off according to PriceHipster and the cheapest price ever @ JB, $249 instead of $399.

    • It's an earlier model though.

    • WRONG MODEL

  • +2

anyone knows where to buy a Roborock S6 MaxV?

    • +1

goshdangit! but yeah we'll see the official release on RoboRock AU site 😋

      • We only recently got the S5 Max so who knows when S6 Max will make it here.

        • launching on 14 september…countdown on their website now.

  • How does it compare to Ecovacs' T8 ?

  • My house is split level. We have a Neato that's really getting on now and has no smarts. We just moved the base station between the upper and lower levels when we want to run it in each part of the house.

My question is how would one of these smart mapping robots work when we move the base station? I would guess it would need to remap the whole level each time?

    • If it’s multilevel house this won’t work (unless you choose to do one level only). If you want to clean multiple floors, Deebot 920 is meant to do that by saving multiple maps - costs around $649 on offer. (If you have two floors, chances are you’re better off with 2 x Deebot 900 and still cheap :D

      • It's only a small house, just so happens to have a single step split through the middle. Don't know I really have the need for 2x 900's, but I might certainly checkout the 920. Thanks.

  • +2

    DO NOT BUY it,

I bought it before really hoping this would work, and we now have a second unit that has gone into LAser Distance is blocked please clean it.

If you enjoy taking items back and fighting for warranty, it's a good buy, but it's a risk I definitely won't take again.

It was painful and long delays in getting a replacement and the replacement unit failed exactly in 1 day and in the same exact manner as the first unit.

Hopefully, the returns would be easier this time via Aldi

    • did you buy deebot 900 or previous model?

  • +1

I brought this yesterday, I'm returning it today.
Planned to replace my aging Roomba 690 with this.

    Here's my quickfire review.

    Pros:

    • mapping is good, once mapped you can target rooms or specific areas to clean.

    Cons:

    • dust bin is tiny
    • carpet pickup is abysmal compared to my old Roomba
    • battery life is horrendous, a ~35 min clean depleted the battery
    • unable to rotate the saved map for no-go zone placement (for irregular shaped items or angled walls)
    • app requires a refresh on opening to show the vacuum.

    Would not recommend.

    • how did you return it? I bought it too and I feel like Dreame F9 seems like a better bargain.
do they ask questions since we used it?
what's the longest time we can wait to return this to Aldi? I'm thinking to by Dreame F9 and test it against this. they have better performances but less review.

      • +2

60 Day return window for Aldi special buys. I just took it back to the store and told them it wasn't what I expected and I'd like to return it. They asked if it was damaged, I also said I'd used it one time, they didn't have any issues.

  • I bought one of these too, I've just about had enough of it. Have tried 3 days in a row to try and get it to map my house. Each time something plays up.

1st time it said the wheels malfunctioned and that they had to be cleaned - I couldn't see anything wrong with the wheels, I spun them and cleaned them. Still errored, I turned it off and back on again and it was happy but lost all mapping progress.

2nd time it was 3/4 done then said it had to charge, it couldn't find the charger and just drove around for ages. When it finally did find the charger it changed it's position on the map to the completely wrong spot.

3rd time it said it had completed cleaning when it missed 2 full rooms of my house then just sat it the middle of the house without returning to charge.

I am trying it again tonight, if it doesn't work out I'm returning it hopefully for a full refund and will be buying a Xiaomi. So disappointed.

  • I've actually been very happy with mine, however I'm saying that coming from a Neato that's 8 years old. Although getting the initial floor map complete took a few goes due to getting bogged in a few spots, it's been pretty compliant to my requests since. It's nice and quiet compared to my neato and does a really good job with our rugs. The floors are polished hardwood throughout.

I've just run my first mopping and it did take a while through the mop for the water to really spread nicely across the mop pad, so in future I'll start with a wet pad and I didn't realise that it didn't have carpet avoidance so I had to cancel it and go round curling up all the rug edges but once that was done we're all good.

Funny though I just sent it to the other end of the house (after mopping) to vacuum one of the rugs, which it did better than my Neato ever did, and coming back to the charging dock, it got within about 2m and then just started running into all the dining room chairs nearby. Buggered if I know why. I cancelled it and then issued another return to charge request and it found its way straight back. anyway, not too bothered by that.

    • Out of curiosity, what time did you have to line up at Aldi to get the Deebot?

      • +1

I got there at 7:50. Was a reasonable line, but most people were there for the hand held vac. I was in the 2nd group of customers through the door (as they were limiting the numbers). there was a stack of Deebots when I got there.
