Aldi Bauhn DAB+ Radio $49.99

270

Available from Saturday 5th November 2011.

  • DAB + Radio
  • 2 year warranty.
  • LCD display
  • Alarm clock with snooze function
  • Rotary volume control
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Speaker output power: 5W RMS

Its a little light on specs but looks good. I assume it would also have FM, a limited number of memory slots and will only be available at stores located in DAB+ broadcast areas.

Last time Aldi sold a DAB+ radio was about 1 year ago for $79.

  • can you dock an i-device on this?

    • Only with a "3.5mm headphone jack" ;-)
As far as I recall there is NO input at all - I can check and get back (My Mum has one)

      • I think the 3.5mm headphone jack would be an output from the radio, not an input. So you can listen to your nice digital radio on your headphones :)

        • Or connect it to an amp. The quality is surprisingly good if you don't crank up the volume too much and overload the amp stage inside the radio. A line out would be even better but for this price you won't get it.

          I was being a bit facetious…
On cheap electronics outputs sometimes behave as bad quality inputs, or have you ever tried using speakers as a low quality microphone ;-)

I just checked the unit from last time that appears to be identical and, as mentioned above, I can confirm there is NO INPUT (apart from power). No USB or anything like that either.

One additional feature that doesn't seem to be mentioned is that it can run on 4xAA Batteries (I have never tested the lifespan though).

  • Only ONE speaker but seems to be identical to last time and from memory that one sounded OK.

  • @ EriceKahlua
As there's no sign of a dock on top and no mention of it in the product description, I'd be surprised if it could.
Does anyone know if the display is dimmable?

    • NOT dimmable and VERY bright at night (assuming it is the same unit as last time that appears identical).

My father is considering installing his own dimmer switch LOL

        Scotch tape. Instant dim :)

        • Gaffer tape. Total dim! Hahaha.

          Gaffer tape. Total dim! Hahaha.

          What? Over your eyes? :-P

        • I can see that even before the arrival of this radio, some places are already dim. :P

      • +1

It automatically dims LCD and turns of the tuner knob light after 10 seconds.

    • Thanks for the feedback guys!

  • Getting onto digital radio in Australia doesn't get much cheaper or easier than this. Great find!

i wish they'd include the model number so we could at least google the specs/manual

    • Bauhn is an Aldi own brand so a model number wouldn't do you any good.

Same goes for almost everything Aldi sells.

I don't know why they even bothered making radio digital. IMO it's a dying technology that people with mp3 players don't bother with anymore - unless you like constant ads, crap talk, and mainstream music.

    • +6

I guess you're unaware of the ABC channels.

    • Did you even read what you typed?
      "…people with mp3 players…"
There is still a huge number of people who don't even own portable music players plus as mentioned stations like all the ABC ones are fantastic. Not to mention that not everyone is a pirate and download whatever they want.

  • a better deal is that Media box player from Aldi. $79

    • Sounds like a good deal, considering that this is equivalent to what most entry level DAB+ radios are, except I wonder why 6xAA instead of 4xAA. Maybe better battery life? And you get an alarm clock. Though, despite my ribbing of EarlyBird, I too would be concerned that the display would light up the whole room with the lights out.

      • 9V instead of 6V.

        • Yes, that's obvious, but why should this chipset need 9V?

        • maybe they need 9V for the backlight?

        • 9v is probably for the amplifier stage.

Here is a reply fom distributor in regards to the bright display.

        • Blue light around the Tune/Select knob and the LCD Backlight, extinguish automatically 10 seconds after last button press. The LCD will remain illuminated, but is very dim.
        • Both will light up again with any button press, or use of the Tune/Select knob.
        • Use of the Volume knob does not affect the illumination, with the exception of turning the unit On.
        • So perhaps it isn't totally identical to the previous one, it seems they have taken on board the comments about the bright light :-)

  • Anybody purchased one? I just got one. After having a play with it, so its going back for a refund.

    • Volume noisy and crackly.Even when just wiggling it.
    • Pressing info/menu button does nothing when pressed. Not working so unable to enter setup menus etc.
    • Does not display artist, track, station id info only station name/id.
    • That was fast. Sounds like you got a faulty unit, it shouldn't do any of those things. If I were you I'd go back right away and get a functional unit in exchange.

  • I just picked one up and set it up.

I have it hooked to an outdoor stereo system, sound is pretty bloody good through the headphone port out.
It is not a line out, but i swear it is acting as a line out. The volume cannot be controlled (on the radio) while using the headphone out. This is a characteristic of a proper line out on a device. I use the stereo systems built in amplifier to get it loud and works very well without any noise.
The speaker on it is not the best, but cannot complain for the price. Same goes for the build quality.
Yes it does not display artist, track. It only displays station name\id. I have mine near a pool area. Hopefully it will survive the elements. Again, for $50, if it lasts a few years ill be happy.

I'm using it in Kallangur, QLD. Some channels like 97.3, I have to have the antenna facing a certain location and stay the hell away from the unit, otherwise the reception breaks up every now and then. I would say it is a location issue (as in where ive kept the unit).

    • Whether artist and track is sent depends on the station. Remember that if they are cueing music from CDs, this information is not on the CD and someone has to type it in. So often they just send you the name of the program in the current slot. If you are getting changing information, then it's working as it should.

  • None left at North Sydney or Chatswood. Looks like they all got snapped up. Maybe I should have gone on Friday night. :)

    • These radios were not on display at my local Mona Vale store. I had to ask for them and pick up from the checkout where they were stored. I doubt they sold out unless people specificaly came in and asked for them.

  • I bought one at Gosford hoping dab was silently turned on up here, sadly no. I don't need another fm radio so it's going back. Gosford also had them locked up but had a few.

Off topic how do I logon to the wp7 app.
