NOT REALLY A TRAVEL ROUTER

Gl.iNet has just released their MV1000W, wireless Brume and they currently have some stock of the "old" MV1000 non WiFi units in stock at Amazon so while waiting to get stock of the new model in they have applied a better discount to existing stock.

Normally $186 25% off = $139.50

Note the WiFi is only 2.4Ghz on the new model not dualband like some of their other routers.

The market/functionality this unit is being aimed at really doesn't require WiFi in most cases as it's really aimed more towards edge compute.

Using the Marvell chipset rather than Atheros or Mediatek gives much better processing for things like VPN :

Market pitch:
Edge Computing Gateway
Brume (GL-MV1000) is a powerful and stable networking product designed to do cutting-edge computing. With the Marvel high-performance chipset, Brume as an excellent VPN router can run state-of-the-art cryptography at an impressive speed. Pre-installed OpenWrt and supported Ubuntu, Brume allows in-depth developments for commercial IoT projects.

Additionally you can actually load Ubuntu onto the unit and dual boot between OpenWRT and Ubuntu depending on your needs (need to load Ubuntu yourself)

Comparative VPN speeds (taken from Gl.iNet's site)
Mango OpenVPN 11Mbps Wireguard 45Mbps
Slate OpenVPN 17Mbps Wireguard 68 Mbps
Brume OpenVPN 97Mbps Wireguard 280Mbps
- Tests conducted on a Local Network. Real world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.
- OpenVPN speeds will be slower when running the device as a server. Results above are in client mode.

Wireguard server and client and OpenVPN server and client functionality pre-installed as well as Tor, DNS over TLS and other functionality.

All the standard Gl.iNet functionality (with the exception of WiFi modes), same easy interface so extremely easy to setup a Wireguard or OpenVPN server and the latest testing firmware has AdGuardHome baked in as well. Or alternatively you could load Ubuntu and run it up with Pi-Hole if that's more your style.

I haven't really done much with the one I have but have it sitting in front of my mesh running the standard OpenWRT interface as a Wireguard Server and an Adguardhome server, but it hasn't skipped a beat.

This can "Man in the Middle" your network meaning potentially anything on wifi and desktop or even smart TV can be forced to go through this VPN - and they would not know it.

  • good little router, and yes its little, been running it since about march.

Agree. If they keep dropping the price every week or so, why don't just make it permanent? more like a cheap stunt to me.

  • Drop the price to $70.49
