Advice on Storing Items in Rented Storage or Alternatives

Hi OzBargain!

I'm planning on purchasing items(when the deal is just right) and I don't have anywhere to store them in. I don't know anyone that owns a garage to store them in. Nor do I have any soace since I'm renting a very small room to save up for these items and to get a lease.

I'm planning on getting a lot new or 2nd hand items like fridge(might hold off since I need the right measurements to fit), appliances to kitchenware to washing machines.

Does anyone have any experience with storage rentals or any other alternatives? Any advice is much appreciated! Have a great weekend everyone!

Just keep the cash in a savings account and go on a shopping spree (new or old) when it's time to move out.

Storage fees, plus having stuff sit there doing nothing is wasted cash.

Very true. I was so busy thinking about what I could be saving on buying them early that I forgot about the costs of keeping them, having the removalists go to 2 sites, and the warranty chipping away with the items collecting dust.

Will definitely think about your comment and everyone elses! I'm now thinking, since I'm planning to move a year from now, to save up till EOFY and get them then.

      Thank you!

      • Can't you just rent some storage space for a few months? Maybe after you move you wont' be in the mood to shop for stuff all at once and would prefer doing it now.

Even if you get a great price now, the added storage fees will probably make it cost more than its worth, just buy it when you need it.

    Hi,

If your motivation is to get a "good deal", you need to make sure that the deal isn't negated by the expense or overheads of storage.

Storage Units start charging according to the size of the Storage you contract over (and it starts to co$t) and there may be a Minimum Storage time.

Also, do you choose somewhere convenient to where you are now (or where you hope to be)…

If you order something to be delivered, will you need to be "on site" to receive it or will "someone" sign for the receipt of the item and store it for you?

You might want to Insure what you buy so think of adequate Insurance unless a Storage Facility offers it.

Tip: Take a Photo with your Mobile Phone of Items you buy and keep Receipts and Warranties somewhere safe off site.

There are some useful generic tips @

If its for use a year away, probably not worth buying because u can't make use of your warranty. But closer to the date if you find a deal, you can ask the retailer about layby options. Put a deposit and slowly pay it off until u need it. Then ask them if they can give u a little delayed delivery (maybe only a week or so tho, cos they won't want to keep it too long)

  • Frankly I think the cost of the storage place and the loss of warranty will negate the savings on big items. The best thing to do is prioritise what you, absolutely, need day one. Spend the time looking at places where the best bargains are found. We’ve done pretty well out of scratch and dent areas, Op shops, friends getting rid of stuff etc. A few of the retailers have “outlet” shops for old stock or seconds.

    Best of luck.

  • Apart from storage costs, double handling and warranty period, the biggest loss of value would probably be from the technology novelty prices. This would apply for most appliances. Technology on premium pricing today would be cheaper next year. For example you may find that a 65 inch tv is well priced for $1800 now, and you snag a deal at $1300. Next near, $1300 probably would be standard price for the same size tv with even better specs. Or, you might find something better and would want to buy that.
One thing I have earnt from being here a long time is that deals will always be there. The longer you wait the better prices and technology you can get.

  • Storage fees will eat up any 'saving' made on the items you put into storage.

Let's say you pay $50/wk to store your items. You found a great fridge at $300 off, If you leave it in storage for 6 weeks, all your saving on that item has been lost now! Sure you'll have other items stored to spread the cost over, but you get the idea. 10 weeks of storage fees is $500. Plus you have the hassle of moving items in and out of storage.

You're best to put all the money away and when you are ready/need the items, do a big buy up!

  • You may even find a furnished place and not need half the stuff you buy
