Has AEB Ever Worked for You?

I recently bought a new Toyota Corolla which was advertised with 'Toyota Safety Sense Pre-Collision Safety system', in other words Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). It is advertised to reduce the risk of a vehicular or pedestrian collision by stopping the vehicle automatically to avoid an accident. However, after doing some further research, it appears that AEB have high failure rates across many car manufacturers including poor detection of pedestrians and during night time scenarios. I understand that the driver should not rely on such technologies as a fail-safe measure but am worried it will create complacency in driving behaviour.

In your experience, has AEB ever saved you from an accident or collision with a vehicle or pedestrian? Would having AEB be an influencing factor in your decision to purchase a vehicle?

Forward Aeb on my Subaru reacts half a second faster than me. Which is good.

Reverse Aeb on my Subaru has avoided hitting some flowers behind the car while reversing.

    So.. it's pretty good.

    • My corolla only has front AEB detection, no rear AEB unfortunately. I'm glad it works for you, I was worried my Corollas AEB wouldn't engage when I need it to.

I was trying to catch up the lights and turn before they turned red. Car in front was going to go through but then decided not to.

I was still acceleration towards it when car in front decided to stop. I was in the midst of reacting, moving foot to brake pedal when it beeped to warn of danger and then started slowing me down. Meanwhile my foot had arrived at the brake pedal and I then took over.

So maybe half a second before I did the car was already slowing down. There was no way I would have crashed. Plenty of distance but it helped I guess

Rear AEB is terrible on my mother’s BMW. Backing out of her driveway, (which has a very mild slope), the car slams on the brakes because it thinks the road is an object. I had to turn it off for her.

  • I've never needed it but anything that increases road safety is a good thing.

Definitely a factor in purchasing but i wouldn't pick a vehicle with poor steering, no traction control, crap brakes, spongy steering… just to have AEB.

  • Is that the thing that stops you from doing doughnuts? Asking for a friend :p

    • No, that's ESC/ESP/DSC.

      • Thank you :)

Yep. Came into my driveway a bit hot one day and missed my brake pedal and almost ran into my garage door and the AEB pulled it up instead. Thanks AEB :D

You should not be driving if you missed the brake pedal.

Mine (subaru) has saved me from multiple accidents and I highly recommend it. The fact it brought me to a complete stop before I even had time to start braking was impressive enough for me to advocate for it if it’s an option.

    1) Car was a week old and I was driving along main road (80km) at about 11pm at night, no other cars on the road. All of a sudden a car flys out from a side street (on my left) doing easily 80km + and cuts straight across infront of me to the side street on the other side of the road. By the time I saw them and registered that they weren’t stopping the car had already come to a halt.

    2) On a large round about turning right (doing about 60km) and as I start to turn right a car enters (from my left) and cuts me off. The woman was on the phone and didn’t see me (her excuse) and i almost went straight into the side of her mini van where her kids where sitting! The only reason we didn’t collide was that my car auto braked.

Judging by the comments here it's no wonder there are accidents. Accelerating to get to traffic lights before they changed and having to be saved by the auto braking. because the vehicle ahead stopped at the red light

Another going through a roundabout at 60kph.

There is a word for this type of driving.

Excuse me but not all roundabouts are small 40km minor roads, there are large multi lane roundabouts with higher speed limits. Maybe you should learn the road rules before judging others.

Sorry bud but I think I know more road rules than the majority here judging by posters response on road rule threads. It's that bad it's downright scary.

The road rules have bugger all to do with going through a roundabout at 60kph. It's something called commonsense..

  • I've had it activate a few times, a couple were semi-legitimate (I believe the system was thinking I wasn't braking hard enough), the other times I rolled up to my garage door a little too hot.

  • Plenty of false positives (maybe the car thinks I'm a bad driver).

Once it activated when the car in front slowed way down unexpectedly.

Few other times when I thought it would have been a close call from a car or a pedestrian and AEB didn't activate. I don't want to test it any further than that.

German automobile magazines and Euro NCAP has video tests of AEB systems. Most of them are useless.

Has absolutely saved me. My last car didn't have it, got a 2018 Kia Picanto with it. At first it was mostly annoying because it would trigger as I was about to start slowing on my own / on curves or such where it's not necessary, but tweaking the time before it kicks in fixed that.

Anyway, it's definitely saved me from a collision a few times where someone very abruptly braked in front of me and it took too long for my stupid meat brain to react. As annoying as it was previously, I can never be mad at it because of that.

Sounds as though you are driving to close to the vehicle in front. Don’t forget that just because your car can stop quickly the car behind may not be able to. Ie it’ll stop you from running into a car, but may cause someone to hit you.

Leave a bigger gal and everyone will have more time to stop.

I always leave a big gap. I'm quite anal about it. That doesn't mean people don't do stupid things like push in and immediately brake, or that moments of distraction don't happen on the road.

Driverless cars can't come fast enough, because it doesn't matter how good a driver someone is, the human element is always going to be prone to failure and all it takes is an instant.

I've had Volvo AEB (branded as "city safety") grind us to a halt at car park boom gates, usually just before I am close enough to reach the ticket machine.

Passengers all got thrown forwards into their seat belts, and just think I can't drive.
