MIUI 12 Glitch - Cannot Change Wallpaper since Update (Note 8 Pro Global)

My Xiaomi Redmi note 8 pro has updated to Miui 12, and has changed the lockscreen and wallpaper as part of the update.

I cannot change the wallpaper, and every time I try to access the wallpaper menu in settings, the settings screen just shuts down.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue (i have searched online, but it doesn't seem common or consistent), or if the new update may be a little wobbly due the removal of some bloatware using fast-tools when I got the phone.

Thanks

  • Do you have a third party launcher?

    • yep poco

      • Check the settings there first, the launcher and UI maybe fighting over who goes first. If you can't find something try uninstalling poco to see if that fixes it (back your settings first).

        • thanks, will give it a go

  • Lucky you, my update to MIUI 12 hosed my Mi9T entirely

Phone is now in an endless bootloop where I can clear data and then reboot and clear data and then reboot…..

    • frustrating. Is it common?

    • So is that via the bootloader?
I haven't done it personally but it is possible to connect to pc to flash the software.

Flash through MiFlash? just need to be in bootloader mode

    • Just take it back to the retailer.

    • Similar thing happen with my Mi Mix 3 5G 9i had a themes update which caused a boot loop and i had to roll back the update. There should be a safe mode i think?

  • LinageOS is the answer, getting rid of MIUI is the best thing we can do to a Mi phone.

    • I think as the note 8 pro has a mediatek processor and not snapdragon, I am out of luck on that front!

      • Sorry, my bad. I have a Redmi Note 4 and a Mi6 and both have Snapdragon so I assumed. Mi6 had a weird issue after a MIUI update (any PC will go to BSOD when phone is connected via USB) and I got rid of MIUI and it was fixed.

        • No drama, it was a good suggestion. I had plans on doing that when I bought it and hadn't realised that it wasn't supported in any of the android builds available. Mediatek issues seemed the main reason.

Once I got the phone up and running Miui has been pretty inoffensive. My last issue was related to having poco launcher installed too and the repetition of settings within the launcher in in the system.

I did strip back the bloatware pretty hard with fastboot so thought I could have gone too far!

          • @svenson: It seems there are few ROMs in XDA including LinageOS (https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-8-pro/developmenā€¦)

Please check well before flashing because I am not sure whether this is for you exact model. You can check with codename for the phone by xiaomi, (for example Redmi Note 4 SD 625 is 'mido')

              @bazingaa: great thanks

will keep an eye on it for sure. A little wary that I may change from one set of minor problems for another.

    • Thanks so I hear but how can I install on a phone in a boot loop?

      • Did you try fastboot or recovery?

        • Thanks for the thought, The install notes say I need to unlock the bootloader but the phone is inaccessible so that path seems lost.

JB have offered to review it as a warranty job; may be the easiest way out.

@Alan Laz: Don't worry, try to flash stock rom which you had earlier with that Mi flash tool. Usually there is always a way out of any softbrick like yours. Sorry, I am not that updated in this regard.
