  • Any thoughts on the "roku channel"?

  • +3

Coming from UK, I wonder if it will have region issues (ie. no local channels).

    • Roku region depends upon the region of your Roku account, plus of course IP etc. I have a UK one and used it for USA stuff for years, now and then have reset it back to my UK account version.

If you can make a local Australian account I'd presume its fine, never tried.

  • What's the usual price? And how does it compare to competition - Xiaomi Boxes and Vodafone media box?

The Nvidiamedia players are perhaps in a different league but do they compare well to this one?

How does it compare with Vodafone TV?

    • When VodafoneTV does the automatic upgrade, you can no longer play any files via USB. So this would be much better if you needed that. Personally I would go the Mi Box S ($85 on Amazon).

  • My favourite thing on Roku is that the app (from the US app store) has private listening to your device so I can use headphones.

    • Is this the same as bluetoothing headphones to my Android boxes?

      • Not sure, as I don’t have any android boxes and my android tv doesn’t have Bluetooth audio but yeah sounds the same

      • It is a different way of doing it. With the Telstra TV, you cannot pair bluetooth speakers/headphones with the media player (which you can with Android TV boxes like MiBox and Voda) - but you can load up the Telstra TV app and then click on the headphone icon, then the audio goes through the phone (or your connected headphones) .
I don't think the private listening allows both audio though - it switches one or the other.

  • Does it do 4k youtube well ?

  • Do we know if it comes with an AU power plugin?

  • Can we get the SBS app and all that on this thing??

    • I have roku ultra and using US store. I can't get SBS channel, or binge. but Roku channel may have some stuff if you aren't very demanding.
I think I may start using Plex free channels more often if it weren't for the ads that freeze for 5 minutes :/

  • Best among all. Very happy with it.

  • does this have Kayo/Plex/Disney + compatibility?

    • Disney plus and plex yes.
      Kayo not sure

Does Roku support KODI installation ?

    • Searching the internetz has provided me with an answer that is NO! You can only screenmoirror from other devices… and thats not why you want this box. so no go

  • Are there any decent Android TV alternatives? I've been reading reviews of the Xiaomi Mi Box S, but it seemingly has issues with 4K content.

    • nVidia shield pro

      • Looks great, but too expensive for the intended purpose. It's going to be used on the bedroom TV primarily for streaming Disney Plus, NetFlix, and YouTube in 4K.

  • The Telstra box is Roku based. I wonder if this is similar?

    • Telstra are very locked down, you don't have many apps and can't region change

I've previously tried the Roku 3 and at that point (likely still) Telstra has the exclusive rights for Roku devices in Australia with the Telstra TV. As a result it was impossible to get iView, 9now, 7plus, SBS etc. on the Roku in Australia as it detects it's not a Telstra TV and won't give those apps as a result. Probably the same for Foxtel Now, Kayo, Stan etc. nowadays too. Unless somebody can prove me wrong….

      • You are correct. You can't get any of the Australian catchup apps.

  • This would be similar to the Telstra TV 3, but without branding and no Foxtel app, and the roku remote looks like it does not have the TV power and volume buttons.

Also I don't think this will have an Australian power plug.

Hopefully you can get the Foxtel and Kayo apps - any ideas if these are available on the Roku?

    • The Telstra TV literally has the purple Roku tag on the remote. If you can get a deal on the Telstra one, it might be better.

      • I have a telstra TV 3 (the roku tags are on the remote and the tv box), and saw this as a cheaper option.
I was wondering if you can get the foxtel and kayo apps on this Roku.
From what I have looked up so far, it appears the Roku players are set up for USA geolocated services, so I am guessing the Kayo and Foxtel apps will not show up in the app store.
Can anyone confirm that this is the case?

    • Now TV is the UK version, you can get codes for next to nothing on Amazon/Ebay for the entertainment channels, then Getflix or similar on your Router.

That said the months and months of Free Kayo sports have been better value as not often deals on Sky Sports.

  • Does it qualify for CR cashback

  • how much is the normal price for this roku?

  • only advantages I can see are

'Enjoy live TV, news, sports, movies and TV episodes on thousands of free and paid channels like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4, My5, Prime Video, NOW TV and many more

English channels - if u cant get those here after ordering its a return to amazon- so can you?

  • These are great as long as you are not interested in the Australian catchup apps. You could possibly sideload them, but good luck finding the Roku apks.

  • how do you get it down to $56.85?
