Recommend a Good Wireless Colour Laser Multifunction Printer for Me

I am looking a new printer. I usually print around 500-1,000 per month.

I was considering between:

  1. Brother Wireless Colour Laser MFC Printer MFC-L3750CDW $397.00
  2. Brother Wireless Colour Laser MFC Printer MFC-L8690CDW $698.00

I am more interested in the L8690CDW as the generic toner is only $36.54 for 4,500 pages, while the toner for L3750CDW is $47.78 for 2,500 pages.

Does anyone have a better printer recommendation?

I just realised that the L8690CDW is now out of stock. Does anyone have a printer recommendation?

Thank you.

  • Toners quote 2500 pages. But in reality you probably get between 600 - 1000 pages.

    • Nah, starter tones that come with printer usually have lower capacity. Proper toner can do that claim, and for a brother printer you can usually squeeze extra out of it

      • I tried it. I bought toners on Ebay rated at 2400 pages. I managed to print 600 pages. It is because 2400 pages on 5% coverage. Good luck with 5% coverage.

  • Yes. HP M479DW. Last week they were online for $540. Far superior printer to the Brother Printers.

    • Thank you. I had a look and was about to purchase it. But the toner is very expensive… No generic toner looks like.

      • No generic toner looks like.

Tried eBay? Several sellers there with generic toners for $109.00 for the 4 colours needed.

        • Even for generic, hp toners are more expensive. And some models even have chip in them making it a pain to use generic ones

  • Out of stock where? A quick google search seems to show there's stock around

  • Does it have to be color?
I thought about getting the color version, but settled on the black/white
I just purchased Brother MFC 2750DW last week myself. Its the best black/white printer imho.
    $280 including delivery from officeworks
I've spent months researching the best printer. No more to inkjet printers
$26 generic toner for 3000 pages

    • Yes, I need color unfortunately. Thank you.

  • i've been looking at the brother l8690 and the hp as well. the comparable hp seems to be about 200 cheaper. i wonder whether that offsets the higher toner cost? probably depends on how much toner you are planning on buying.

  • FWIW, I bought the MFC-L3770CDW back in June and have been really happy with it. Has NFC printing and duplex scanning (both of which are missing from the MFC-L3750CDW) and a larger tray capacity.

    • Thank you. I had a look at that as well but the toner cost is quite expensive. I print quite alot. 500 to 1000 per month.

    • hey i'm looking at this printer and I was hoping you could help to answer some questions.

with the duplex scanning -> does it only do one double sided page? Or can you give it like a stack of pages and it'll automatically go through and scan them all both sided one by one? That's the type I have at my work and it works really well.

Also, when the ink runs out on the colour, can you still use the black toner without having to replace all the colour ones?

I heard if you upgrade the firmware, the 3rd party toners stop working. Have you had that experience, or have you just not upgraded the firmware?

      • with the duplex scanning -> does it only do one double sided page? Or can you give it like a stack of pages and it'll automatically go through and scan them all both sided one by one?

It has a document feeder, so you can stick a bunch of pages on there and it will duplex scan them automatically.

Also, when the ink runs out on the colour, can you still use the black toner without having to replace all the colour ones?

I haven't actually had to replace any of the colour toners yet so unfortunately can't answer this one for you from personal experience. However, you can configure the printer to print in mono only and it will only utilise the black toner for this purpose. It's also possible to reset the toner life/status, so in theory, I guess you could trick the printer into thinking the colour toner is still there, but set it to print in mono only and continue to print simple black and white.

I heard if you upgrade the firmware, the 3rd party toners stop working. Have you had that experience, or have you just not upgraded the firmware?

I have upgraded the firmware, but have not replaced toners. The Brother website implies that you should always use genuine Brother consumables, but it does not suggest that it cripples 3rd party consumables. YMMV.

        • Thanks for that!
