No Usage Fee for AmEx Card

Just got approved for AMEX card and will need to spend $3000 for the Qantas points. As far as I know, most businesses charge a lot on using AMEX card. Can people tell which businesses do not charge or charge minimal fee on using AMEX card.

Thanks

Except JB Hi-Fi; I think it's 2.45% in store (you can get around this online by paying with PayPal)

  • Are you looking for a comprehensive list?

    Someone start a wiki!

Seriously, though. There aren't many big retailers that charge fees for Amex. In general, only the really price sensitive ones may do so. As for bills like utilities and any govt, always tend to charge it

  • Australia Post do not apply a surcharge when purchasing stamps

    • $3000 worth of stamps???

You'll probably need that much to send a single letter soon. Went to send a snail mail the other day… $1.10! Gone are the 50c days :(

      • Gotta start somewhere

Most major retailers don't surcharge Amex. The ones that do are usually smaller businesses, some government agencies and some utility providers. Also payment facilitator companies like DEFT.

    • Except JB Hi-FI (and I presume by association, Good Guys)

Looks like Good Guys accept it (not sure about surcharge though) https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/about-credit… (I should have linked to this part of the Amex website earlier)

        • I had a look at my last Good Guys purchase which was paid with an Amex; no surcharge if you pay online (this was in June though; may have changed since) and no need to go via PayPal too unlike JB Hi-Fi

Just buy $3000 worths of gift card? Or $3157.9 worth of Woolworths gift card via cash rewards or shopback.

  • To pay private health insurance or CTP , no surcharge

Add your AMEX to your paypal account, there are a lot of companies that accept paypal without fee but charge an AMEX fee direct or don't accept at all, Telstra, for example.

    • Unrelated question, but does anyone know why? It’s seems so strange to me.

Telstra charge a fee for all credit cards, not just AMEX (0.3% + gst) unless you're on direct debit

      • Only if you pay direct, paying with AMEX via PayPal doesn't incur the surcharge.

Where do I start? Coles, Woolies, Harris Farm, Myer, David Jones, Harvey Norman, Chemist Warehouse, Aus Post, Country Road, H&M, BP, 7/11, Bunnings, Liquorland, BWS, Vintage Cellars, Dan Murphys, First Choice, Maccas, Hungry Jacks, Uber, Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Menulog, Merivale, Rockpool Group, Target, Kmart, Mycar, Apple, Bing Lee, Catch of the day, Officeworks, Good guys (JB surcharges though), Uniqlo, Zara, Iconic, Cotton On, Freedom, King Furniture, Big W, Event Cinemas, Hoyts, Netflix, Stan, Foxtel, Village cinemas, Rebel Sport, Optus, Telstra, Bupa, NIB, Allianz, Lumo, Powershop, Red Energy, HCF, Flight centre, Helloworld plus a bunch of councils and a bunch of unis and a bunch of airlines and a bunch of hotels and a bunch of car rental places to name a few.

That being said, surprised you applied for a card without seeming to have done much research. A bit like my Uber driver last weekend - he told me he was looking at getting credit cards to earn points and then asked if any AMEX cards earns points…

  • Shell / BP / Caltex accept Amex. And anywhere that takes Paypal.

  • Thanks all

  • Take your time to spend them. You can also ask your friends if they are about to buy a new phone or anything and buy for them using your card and they can pay you back too.

  • Visit ikea, use amex, come back in a few months with receipts if that's your kind of thing to do
