  • I wonder if it'll go sub $300 anytime soon🤷‍♂️

    • +1

considering they're going for about $190 USD in the states without a special, I'd dare say so

    • +2

I've got the 2017 version of this one so I am not sure if I want to pull the trigger yet. On the US nVidia website, it retails for 200 USD. That's 273 AUD!

      • +2

        We have 10% GST. So that’s $300.

  • +2

Missed out on the last one, so thanks for posting this! Thanks to @rekkore for their awesome summary on the previous post that made me pull the trigger on this one

    • Better than a Vodafone TV? Does this do live TV?

  • +1

Looks good, but thinking I am going to get a Odroid N2+ 4GB as I only want to run Kodi.
This is better if you want the other apps that the Shield provides.

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

  • +2

I'm okay with this price. Sick of dealing with apps unable to use the full-power of my TV's processor to run 4K content properly so I'll take the hit and use this instead. Thanks OP.

    • I’ll probably stick with xbox one s.

      • A good choice if you don't want A.I upscaling ; )

    • +2

Similar here, I got sick of dodgy cheap Android boxes and finally got a Shield. Been worth it.

  • +5

Gonna wait patiently for cyber Monday. Pretty good price though!

    • +1

Doing the same. Patience is a virtue.

  • +1

    Got one. Thanks OP

  • these are pretty awesome little boxes, I used some qantas points to purchase one a few weeks back

  • +1

I don't get this, from what I understand, it's a Chromecast on steroids?
Is this for "dumb" TVs or are people not a fan of the in built UX/UI of their TVs?

    • +1

Kinda, you won't find better app compatibility than the shield, also going to be much snappier than your TV.
A.I upscaling is another big plus.
And… Gaming, or in my case retro gaming

      • LG made me Chromecast Binge and Kayo. They are both native now.
Also getting free to air via Kodi without a conventional antenna

      • +1

Yep this one of the many uses for the shield tv plus I bought a hisense Q8 75 inch TV 3 weeks ago and the OS on the Tv sucks balls

        • Was considering buying this TV or Samsung q80T for oled picture quality. Dilemmas

          • +1

@Scotch: OS on my 2 year old Samsung Q60 still works the same as the day I bought it. One of the reasons I never felt the need for a Streaming box. Tizen is snappy.

            • @dealhunter52: Ended up buying an LG 65 BX and nvidia shield Pro. Been years, so I decided to upgrade. Should be delivered next week.

      Is this for "dumb" TVs

Most people who buy this already have a newish 4k Androd tv, but they what the best possible UX. Even the latest and most expensive 4k TV's don't hold a flame to the Shield in terms speed and app compatibility, not to mention it's high regularity of OS updates and improvements.

      • +1

25th update this past week I believe too :)

        • +1

Not to mention the remote updates!

      • TBH I have a Shield and a 2020 LG, WebOS is very fast and very impressive and the AI upscaling on the CX is very impressive.

I do use the Shield for game streaming and if I want to watch 24fps content. Am looking at Ambilight though so will always have to have an external source to run that.

      • Honestly I don't know why sluggish TV UI is so prominent. I've never owned a TV that felt responsive.

        • Nor have I, and using a TV remote with those bigger rubber buttons doesn't help to make the experience feel any better.

  • How good is Plex on shield!!!

    • +1

I hear a lot about Plex, but I've been using Emby for many years and pretty happy with it. Is there much of a difference?

      • +1

Plex is has less options, but having said that has more powerful options Emby is missing. Eg can transcode DTS to DD based on destination player.

        • Find it odd that Plex can't play BD50s.

  • Sadly not as good as Kodi with PlexKodiConnect, at least in my case.

Plex app struggling with big 4K files stuttering, whilst PKC can handle them.

  • Pulled the trigger on this also. Time to retire one of my WD Live(s). Will give this a try.

    • WD Live wow that's a blast from the past. I had 2 of those once. Retired mine in 2015 for the original Shield TV which I still use today.

    • Omg. I bought one ages ago and throw it out after a few month out of frustration due to its lagginese

    • Same thought process for my Minix NEO-1, retired it for the Shield!

  • What's the advantage of this with a Sony KD55X9000H that already has Android OS?

    • See the comments above

  • Ugh. Would jump on it, but don't have Plus..

  • Just take a free Plus trial.

    • Already used it

      • Open a new account with new email.

  • Found out tonight that the Shield is an excellent NAS as well. Transferring files from/to an external drive over the network at Gigabit speeds (via CAT6 cable).

  • Is there a good reason to upgrade my Mi TV to this?

  • I had a Mi TV before upgrading to my first 2017 Shield. The performance improvement was huge. If youre using a 4K TV, it's worth considering.

  • If i buy thus i'll use it as a streamer. Is there a big difference between this and the app installed on my LG B9 Oled Tv?

    • HUGE difference.

      Chalk and cheese

  • Tech noob here:

Would I need to be paying for 4k netflix or other streaming services to watch netflix content in 4k on the shield or does the shield already make netflix content into 4k even with a basic netflix subscription?

    • +1

You'd need to pay for a 4k subscription for the true 4k experience. It will upscale a 1080p subscription, but it's no substitute for true 4k.

      • ahh that's fair, thanks for the response! I take it you use one of these? I'm super tempted to get it atm with these deals going on

        • Yes I have two!

There will always be deals in the future….. Even if you don't buy now, some one will be sure to list (on ozB) more shield discounts in the future.

  • Any idea if this seller is selling an AU product or an international product?

    • +1

I received mine. Says made in China (remote made in Korea). It has 3 plug adapters, so it could be a version made for the international market. I'm happy with it.

But less happy with the way the box was packaged. No bubble wrap, and 2 layers of plastic - inner was freezer bag quality, outer was a bit more durable. Tape with FRAGILE in big print all over the edge, but seriously, do you think Aus Post gives a stuff? Box is a bit dented in the corners, as you'd expect from no protection. Some ppl may not care, it's just the box. But I'm weird and like to keep the original packaging.

Overall the product seems to be working fine and there are no issues.
