Do Companies Have Vastly Different Stock Prices?

I asked Scorptec if they could price match this
https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Laptops-&-Notebooks/Lapt…
Model: 20QFS00K00

With this
https://www.megabuy.com.au/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-yoga-g4-14-inc…
Model: 20QFS00K00

I wanted to buy from Scorptec as the Megabuy one would take 4 weeks for delivery as its on special order.

Scorptec response was:

"Unfortunately the price cant be match as this is below our cost and no stock at our supplier is at this price.
We do have the stock and best price for this will be $2349 with free shipping.
Let us know if you need it and would like to go ahead."

That's $791 difference.
How can the Megabuy price be below the Scorptec cost price by this much?
Like I assume they are similarly sized companies and get similar deals.

I'm a bit confused.

Note this is the same product in this ozbargain deal 1-2 weeks ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/561479

Comments

  • megabuy special order them from disti clearance

    • I'm sorry I didn't understand this comment. What's disti clearance?

      • i'd say those are special clearance price from their distribution channel, with minimum order quantity like 50nos

scorptec doesn't have ready stock either, looks like if you're buying, they just get 1 in , not interested to buy a batch for holding stocks

        • Ohh - Thanks for the clarification. Interesting.
Ahh now I get why it says only delivery available. Cheers

        • Could also be a local stock vs parallel import thing (which would explain the lead time). Lots of reasons basically that one company may not be able to match anothers price. You can also expect $2349 isn't their cost price, they'll still be making money on it otherwise what's the point.

  • Sometimes it’s not about the cost of the stock but slow moving or excess stock items that a business wants to get rid of. This can even mean selling it below cost.
