  • Are Kogan easier/better to deal with and are they $50 better to deal with?

  • +3

    Wow… I clicked the link… it shows up as $499 + shipping…

EDIT: WHAATT?? Delivery & Handling: $79.00????

    • You have to factor in $79 shipping, which is just a little bit annoying…still, it's a good price, so can't complain..

EDIT - Aah, I see that you've discovered it yourself..;D

    • +9

Every time you see ShoppingSquare you should assume they're padding the shipping cost.

    1) It's SS
    2) It's an outdated and poor camera
    3) It's a crap lens
    4) It's not even the kit IS lens (which is also crap)
    5) It's grey and you'll have to deal with SS for any issues

    • +1

I'm not so sure whether you can call it an "outdated and poor camera". I mean, yes, it has been superseded by the 600D, but they essentially share the same features, bar an articulated screen. And of course it's not going to be better than it's bigger brothers (ie 60D, 7D etc.), but for a beginner, I reckon it's pretty damn capable…dpreview gave it a very favourable rating in it's review…

But on all your other points, I have to completely agree…better off finding somewhere which just sells the body only for cheap and get a better lens with it..

    • +1

The 550D is not a poor camera. The main diference between the 550D and the current 600D is the flippy screen.

It's the standard kit 18-55 with IS (look at the picture). It's not the bestest of the best but it's a kit lens, not a bloody L lens.

      • are you sure?
        How about this picture: http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/images/products/24372.jpg
Does it tell u IS or not?

        Thanks

        • That's a picture of a different camera ("Kiss Digital X" is a 400D, this item is a "Kiss X4" = 550D). Presumably someone stuffed up and stuck an old pic in by mistake.

I don't think anyone would be surprised that ShoppingSquare buggered something up…

Furyou, I am really sorry that I tried to give you +ve vote but on small phone screen it touched -ve and I am trying to revoke my vote but I couldn't. +Ve for very good observation abt the lens.

      • I couldn't help myself but lol'd when I saw you got negged…

      • Of course you can revoke your vote. Just click on the "votes" link up the top left.

  • +2

    $79 delivery i lol'd big time

    • Is there any chance that it might be 1 hour lightning delivery service? If it is, you cant fault them. It would be an utterly excellent service

      • +1

Yeap apparently the camera gets sent to you through those tubes in futurama

  • well, to be honest, the camera is not bad, but the bad thing is it comes with 18-55 non IS, can anyone tell me how shit is the lens?
    Thanks

Can we get coupon for the shipping discount? I remember one of the member OP can do that…

    • +1

      What makes you think it's non-IS? Canon don't sell the 550D with a non-IS 18-55mm.

    • Is it definitely not the IS lens? It says kit in the description and the 550d kit lens is IS. But then again, it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to sneak a crap lens in with a decent camera.

      • I got my Kiss X4 branded 550D from ShoppingSquare on eBay a few months ago for $650 (a good price compared to others at the time), it was the standard kit.

        • So it is NOT the IS lens with the kit from SS?

        • What? It is the standard kit lens (i.e. the EF-S 18-55mm IS). I don't know how I can be any clearer.

        • by not using the word STANDARD - but thanks for clarifying that it is the IS lens

  • Hey guys, is this camera better than a Nikon D3100? (I'm looking for a personal opinion and hence not googling)

    • The answer is "it depends". They're fairly closely matched, but the D3100 is usually cheaper (don't know what D3100 prices are like right now since the factory in Thailand got flooded).

You might find this DigitalRev video is helpful in deciding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGZwk9YgeKg

Edit: The cheapest price I could find on a D3100 after a quick look was $598.95 from ShoppingSquare on eBay, so basically the same price as this.

One thing to keep in mind is that the D3100 doesn't have an autofocus motor and so only Nikon lenses with an inbuilt motor (AF-S) will autofocus. That's not a problem for the 550D because all Canon lenses have autofocus motors.

      • Well i was reading up reviews on cnet and they rated the Nikon D3100 as more user friendly. So i went with the D3100 and I'm really happy with the features its provided. In regards to Ibft's comment, Does that mean that you'll have to manually focus if you decide to buy a sigma lens for example?

But I'm very happy with it and got it for $620 from Harvey Norman during their sale. I had to spend 20mins arguing for it though…saying that its off the Retail price on their computer (since it was an old model, it was selling at 800 even though original RRP is 980). Anyways I just wanted to do a shoutout to whoever advised me to call up headoffice if they wouldn't honor the discount, because the manager went out back, made a phone call (after i threatened to call headoffice) and came back saying yeah it was the website's mistake to put it at that price and it should have been 980…but he would go ahead and honor it this time)

Ozbargain = LIFE SKILLS. They should have ozbargain as a subtopic of Commerce in the ATAR.

        • A lot of third party lenses (but not all) have autofocus motors built in (because they have to have them for other cameras.)

Nikon AF lenses, though, won't autofocus. AF-S lenses will, but they tend to be more expensive e.g. the AF 50mm f1.8D is $124 right now on eBay vs the AF-S 50mm f1.8G for $240 on eBay. It's a better lens and as far as lenses go $240 is still pretty low but for the beginner it makes getting started more expensive.

If you shoot a lot in low light, Nikon is better because it handles noise better at high ISO. However, choosing a Nikon or Canon is a very subjective matter. You have to feel them and find which one has the better fit in your hands(the grip, layout of buttons etc). Either way, you can't go wrong with whatever you choose imo.

  • I'd rather pay $1 extra and get it from eglobal with the knowledge that I AM getting the IS lens.

    http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/canon-eos-550d-kit-w…

Pretty average camera in terms of features but it better than the Canon xxxxD series.

Pretty hard to give the deal a +ve when other stores are selling it for virtually the same price.

    • +2

You forgot to add the $84.00 for shipping.

      • +1

Worse than that I linked to the wrong product.

The Kiss X4 kit is actually $16 cheaper than the 550D kit and there's a current discount code of $10 for shipping.

The eglobal deal also has a 24months warranty period compared to the 12 months from SS so the real difference is $46 for an extra 12 month warranty.

  • Good deal i have on myself i got mine off ebay around 1 year ago for the same package for $679. So its definably a good price. I also have 2 years warranty and happy to send it back OS if anything goes wrong. Rather pay $500 less then retail.

  • If something goes wrong, how much would it cost to send overseas?

    • +1

around $79 maybe? that's how much they charge the shipping…lol

    • You don't have to send it overseas, you send it to Apus/ShoppingSquare in Sydney. They only ship to you from overseas instead of importing it themselves to dodge the GST.

      • Is this a gray import. would canon australia support its warranty?

  • Hi, has anyone already ordered this camera and is the lens definitely IS ? Do I need to buy 300 mm zoom lens separately and how much would it cost?

  • Still not sure if I should get this one. Bit of a newbie photographer.
