Skoda Octavia Wagon with All The Optional Extras

Hey guys, apologies if this has been covered before but I couldn't find anything in the forums.

I'm looking to buy a used car and have found a 2017 Skoda Octavia Wagon with 43K KMs in Canberra. Normally I'd expect this car to be selling for somewhere in the high teens (19K?) but it has all the factory optional extras (Luxury Pack, Tech pack, Sunroof, metallic paint). On a new car today these extras would cost about 11K but I have no idea how that changes the value of a used car.

Do extras depreciate at the same rate as the car or lose value even faster?

Any help would be appreciated, not sure if I can post the direct car sales link here.

Base car 2017: 26K
Options: 11K
Likely 2017 purchase price: 36K?

Extras depreciate at probably 4x the rate unless it's something highly sought after which is almost never the case.

  • Be very very sure the sunroof doesn't leak. Any repairs on sunroofs normally cost a fortune.

    • Thanks for the tip, i'll have a google about how to check for this specifically :)

Ask the owner to take it through a drive in car wash with you

New and added features are nice to have and add a hefty premium to a new car, but in the used market, they only add a little extra value to the car. Where by these additional extras may have cost the original owner $11k, a few years later and that car may sell at a little over what the next model down would sell for.

It's like metallic paint. You pay a premium for it at new, but in the used market, people are not really going to care.

It's kind of like the old saying is "buy the worst house in the best street". The value of the top of the range usually helps support the bottom of the range, but it comes at the expense of the top of the range.

  • How much extra are they asking for it?

As above. Extras don’t make a lot of extra difference once the car is older. After 3 years it might be worth $1-2k more. Many used buyers don’t really care about bells and whistles, it’s more about the basics of the car.

More important is the overall condition, except possibly if the options add a significant safety feature. Redbook etc will give you a range of values for a car based on condition and features. All the extras, but not great condition won’t be worth any more than a base model in fantastic condition.

    • They want 23K but that's the carsales number so i'm sure it's padded a little bit.
Redbook gives the top of the private resale range as 17.6K before any additional options. So looks like an extra 6K on top of base value assuming it's in good condition.

        Too much.

      • Don't buy a car above the Redbook max value. I learnt this the hard way when I did paid a little extra (about $1000) over the maximum and got rear-ended 6 months later and the car was written off. Lost out on about that much.

  • As others have said, the options make hardly any difference used. Nornally you might get a grand or 2 more, but it'll be easier to sell than a pov pack.

  • As an owner of a purchased used MY16 Octavia RS with all bar sunroof, I disagree with the depreciation comments of others as it was much harder to find the car I was after, and hence those that did match my requirements were priced a bit higher.

Certainly not reflective of the purchase price new, but somebody else has already taken the brunt of the depreciation hit; yours should hold better.

By the time you go to sell it won’t be worth any more $, but should be easier to sell due to features.

      • Disgreed, there was definitely a couple grand between the base RS and spec'd up RS models.

  • Why the Octavia over the Superb? You can get a bigger (arguably better made) car with most if not all of those extras or more, for around the same price or maybe a couple grand more.

The Superb is a much larger car and no performance options (though IMO a better looker!)

I went through the same, but the Octavia is a much smarter buy (again, just IMO)

    • I don't feel like i need the bigger car so the octavia was the right balance of wagon and price point. That being said, i'll have a look around and see what's on the market.

  • Manual?

    Ouch, hello bad resale

In Canberra it's great for dropping a few gears as you approach all those roundabouts.

    • Yes, that's the one. Manual doesn't phase me, but it should make the base car a little cheaper.

      • I love manuals also but be aware certain features don’t work on manuals like adaptive cruise won’t work to standstill like it does on the auto

    • Man that is a damn bargain.

  • It represents great value at $22,900.

    Just pay asking price then….

  • I have the 2015 Octavia scout wagon with the extras package and the sunroof, heated seats are fantastic!!!
Its a great car, when i am ready to upgrade i will definitely be looking at another Skoda.
Been watching the tour the France and the new skodas look great!

    • Hey!

How has servicing and repairs/parts cost been with the Octavia? I'm wanting to buy one probably sometime next year, and curious on these costs. I'll be doing my own research, but would like to hear directly from someone.

      • I have the 1.8 petrol one, they have a set service guide and the services range between 300-700 a year, i am getting my 60,000 km service next month which is estimate at 900, definitely the dearest i have paid so far, but next years service should be 373.

I have received great service from Artarmon Skoda.
A month after warranty expired by water pump broke (mine only had 3 yrs warranty, they now offer 5 yrs), the estimate was 2,000 but they contacted skoda aus and it was fixed under warranty.
It will be hard to buy anything but a skoda next for me……

        • Wow thanks so much for the information. Those prices are definitely high compared to what i'm used to, but I've heard such good things about the car.

I'd be looking at the 2019 (possibly 2020 since i'll be looking to buy a new car next year) wagon 1.4L turbo.

The partner wants an SUV, i want to stick to a wagon lol.

          Thanks again for the information.

  • As a skoda owner (superb) it is the packs that makes the car amazing. Pay a little extra and enjoy :-)
