  • Is this worth buying over a router provided by an ISP like the ZTE h268a(Exetel) or Vr1600v(TPG)?

I'm potentially moving to Optus with 215Mbps plan , wondering if any upgrade would make any real world differences.

this is a router, not a modem. You cant replace the modem-router provided by an ISP with a router.

You can use a modem on its own.

A router or switch must be connected to a modem.

      • Whoops that's on me for not reading it thoroughly , I just assumed it was a router/modem combo. Thanks for the informative reply!

        Guess I'll keep looking then.

        • You can connect this router to the modem if you want better wifi coverage or to split the workload, but if you want to replace the modem, yes, definitely keep looking.

The vr1600 is junk and specific to tpg. Also has a lot of functions disabled
      Please dont pay for it

Whether you need a router or modem depends on your setup what nbn have installed to your place

not if you pickup cheap off gumtree and use the superuser password to access full functionality

        • How do you do this? Superuser?

          • @samkenny: google is your friend or pm me if stuck

            • @Irishness: I did find it but now wondering what is the benefit. Can't find that in google :/

            • @Irishness: How do you even PM?

God I feel pretty new now :(

I too would like the super user, I’m using this as a repeater / signal extender but it’s being pretty flakey so wondering if there are any options or FW changes to fix it up!

              • +1

@cam83: basically if you log in as superuser you can access all the functionality that the ISP's have hidden like VOIP & other settings that aren't available for admin login. plenty of info here https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9vx05ww9

depending on whether it's V1 V2 or just V there are different passwords and the later ones supplied by ISP's don't allow you to change the password

to PM go to my account>messages

                • @Irishness: Read that thread and tried it
                  Wanted to bridge it
                  Couldn’t
                  Binned it

                • @Irishness: Thanks mate. I thought I wouldn't need it to rebroadcast the same wifi in another room (i have two, one v1 and v2) as I am using an ethernet cable. Hopefully, I won't need those settings.

                  • @samkenny: I'd use su to switch off cwmp and snmp on it though
ethernet cable is best unless you go mesh which is next best, Asus or a cheap chinese system unless you want to invest

    • hfc has an nbn modem supplied

    Fixed:

This router sends out 5GHz (less users, less electrical interference, less signal blockage) and 2.4 GHz (long transmission distance, good through-wall performance, wider signal coverage) at the same time, independent signals do not interfere with each other.

My eyes were twitching reading the original haha. That's kind of a big mixup from the seller's description!

  • Anyone know if this can be used as a bridge to extend WiFi? It's cheaper than their WiFi extenders, and possibly more reliable too?

    • have a search of the thread I posted above on whirlpool for a wealth of info
