Why Was My Home Insurance Claim Approved?

I had home insurance claim for leaking water in the past.

The Insurer said it was due to wear and tear (which is normally not covered)

However, they approved the claim anyway and fixed the damage.

Why did they do it?

  • Maybe they think it's wear and tear but couldn't be certain.

  • What did the Insurer say when you asked them?

Different Insurance company assessors have different interpretation of the rules and sometimes are almost human when you claim.

    • The accessors mentioned the damage could be because of wear and tear, however the source of damage has been replaced.

Unclear. My suggestion is to return the claim money to them immediately and inform them that you will not be accepting any such payment until they can prove to your satisfaction why this claim was approved and not declined as the damage was clearly due to wear and tear.

they mentioned they will arrange everything (organised tradies to work, etc) to fix it.

Maybe your excess was $1000 but only cost them $600 to fix it?

    • my excess is less than $500, and the total quoted fix is more than $2000. But I am due for renewal soon.

    Hey who is your insurer?

  • What was leaking?

Insurance is a business. If they deny your comparatively small claim you probably won't renew and might go complain about them to neighbors, friends and public.

Or they just say "it's only a couple of years premiums we'll let him have this one" and they keep you as a customer and maybe you even tell those people how good they were about it.

It might cost them more in the long run to deny your small claim than to just make you happy.

Maybe "computer said yes". Maybe computer said yes because it knew approving this little claim would impress you and keep you a customer for decades longer. Computer might have looked at the cost of repairs, compared it to the cost of further investigations and weighed it up against the time you'd probably take up on the phone if it was denied, and found it cheaper to just approve it. The computer only cares about what's best overall based on the information at hand, if the human involved has no way of knowing otherwise what else do they have to go on and how much effort should they put into a tiny claim anyway.

    • Always have a tiny bit of a whinge on insurance claims. It seems to always pay off for me, just an extra couple of bucks on every claim for minimal effort.
