After Decking Oil for Merbau Deck

I've had a merbau deck for about 2 years and I've used a water based decking oil in the past, which does a good job but after a few days it seems to fade quickly. Our decking boards are from bunnings and bunnings is likely the only store in my town where I'd be able to purchase decking oil from. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best oil to get?
Thanks

Try get floods spa-n-deck, not Bunnings unfortunately

    • Agreed, this is great and easy to apply. Got mine at Paintspot. I had to do 3 coats for the colour to show properly.

your decking oil fades after a few days?? that doesn't sound right… what brand of oil are you using?

    Feast & Watson

    • Highly recommend.

    • Feast Watson, is a great choice. Follow the instructions on the tin.

I have used Cabot's Aquadeck on mine and thought it was quite good. There are negative reviews online about it being 'sticky', but I don't think they applied it correctly as I have not had any issues with this at all.

      +1 to the aquadeck

I use this as well. I have noticed once or twice it can have a sticky feel a day or two after it was applied, but nothing major that I've given it any thought about it until you said this. Its not like your thong would stick it to. You can feel it has a bit of stick when walking over it, but nothing sticks to it and it doesn't leave marks etc.

I assumed it was part of the drying process as within a week of applying, there isn't any sticky feeling, so its only a short term issue at worse.

Yes - I think it is the drying time that people have not been allowing for. It would probably vary depending on the climate and humidity where you live.

This is probably the best you can get from Bunnings

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/intergrain-10l-natural-ultradeck…

I have used this and Cabot's Aquadeck, Intergrain is so much better.

Less than half a year of north facing sun exposure, Cabot's has faded quite badly while Intergrain still looks new.

Expensive but I have seen occasional 20% deals that match Paintspot sale prices.

    • Interesting, I will check this out. As per my other comment I have used Cabot's Aquadeck but have not compared it directly to anything else.

Do you have any photos highlighting the difference?

      • Sorry, all intergrain now and unfortunately for me started works in the backyard before stage 4 lockdowns here in Melbourne so everything looks like sh*t now with no prospect of getting it sorted out until end of Oct.

The real test for intergrain will be when I try and remove from the deck bits of concrete slurry from the exposed aggregate washing plus the associated greyish stains…

        • No worries, I think I might give it a go anyway. My deck is due to be done once I get a weekend of clear weather!

agree - intergrain way better than cabots and F&W. i have also recently tried cutek which i'm told is very superior and strongly recommended. They dont stock them at bunnings though but worth exploring.

        Time to look at Cutek…

        • Cutek 50 Is what OP needs, Bunnings sells lots of products and is convenient and user friendly, but there is lots of architectural specified items you will never find there, most of the Bunnings products are aimed at DIY market and are low quality.

Schaeffer's stands out amongst the rest. Your deck will be the envy of the neighbourhood.

And also look at Schaeffer's…..slippery slope…

edit: Oh dear me…..not too sure if the recommendation was genuine but that gave me a much needed laugh! Thank you!

Thanks so much everyone. I don't mind spending extra at all on something like this, so appreciate the answers.

  • Hey OP which did you end up choosing and what are your thoughts on it so far?

    • Not OP but as per iampoor's comment above I tried Intergrain on upper deck which was renovated recently.

Compared to the Cabot's Aquadeck you can immediately tell the difference in the quality of the feel and finish, I now think it is definitely worth spending a bit more for the Intergrain.

  • The reality is that you will need to re oil every year in most parts of Australia (sometimes twice!), particularly if you want it to look good. Totally depends on how sheltered from rain, sun and wind the deck is. I’m an architect and I would specify Cutek CD50 Extreme, but also happy with Intergrain which is a Dulux product. Both products near regular re-application and are easy to apply.
