Shanghai has some wonderful old architecture, from traditional temples to the Art Deco.
The city was sadly neglected in the communist era, and now they rub salt into the wounds with a giant bottle opener?

    • The battle of Shanghai during the WW2 by Japan did far more damage

      • So the Japanese destruction was worse than the Bottle Opener, yes. Damned by faint praise?

I think the battle of shanghai really did damage to the part of town that would have been ripped down anyway. the Japanese wouldn't move into the English and French concessions in shanghai where the currently most renowned buildings were built. there is a museum with actual bullets still in the wall from the battle commemorating the battle. the Japanese really wasn't so brutal on shanghai due to the high number of foreigners in shanghai at the time ( of course this is in comparison to other cities i.e. nanjing)

having said that there is a beautiful building built by the English (using english imported cement) in the area that used to be the japanese concession that was a slaughterhouse. absolutely stunning structure and restored with most of the architectural detail intact.

    • I like the giant bottle opener line hehe .

      • Thankyou. Mainland Chinese nationalism is strong here. I doubt I would get as many downvotes for calling the Sydney Harbour Bridge "the Coathanger". When did mainlanders become so thin-skinned?
OK, I'm in Perth, so ask me about our Bell Tower! (But not if you love it and are easily offended.)
I have visited many Chinese cities, but not yet Shanghai. It is high on my To-do list. I hear the SWFC has the best views in all Shanghai. It is the only place where the views are not spoiled by the Bottle opener :-)

I'm surprised, I think the Chinese themselves call it the giant bottle opener. there was a meme going around before the shanghai centre finished construction (so it still had cranes sticking out from the top) calling the skyline the kitchen utility triple set comprising of a bottle opener, egg beater( shanghai centre) and syringe ( Jinmao building).

FYI, The most significant feature of the design is that huge trapeziform aperture on the top portion which used to lessen the impact of wind pressure, this wacky feature makes people referring to the building as a bottle opener. In fact this sort of design is not so rare and unique, it can be found in some other cities, such as Duke Energy Center in Charlotte, Kingdom Center in Riyadh.

The 100th floor makes a great observation deck tho. Sick views.

      • Good to know. I went next door the Pearl and had a dinner at the top floor rotation restaurant. The view is great at night.
