Advice for Buying on Alibaba?

Mrs C has a side gig of making home decorator items and now she wants to monetise this by selling them online. However, she's finding stock from distributors here in Australia is not spectacular value (high minimum orders, expensive, costly freight, etc). She's had a look at Alibaba where many of the same things she's been buying domestically can be had for vastly cheaper, so even factoring in freight she can get a lot more for the same investment.

However, buying on Alibaba looks a bit confusing as it's not strictly a 'click & pay' platform. Has anyone here bought on the platform? Can you provide any advice? What are some of the advantages and pitfalls? Any alternatives you can suggest?

I've read a couple of online guides but I'm still none the wiser. I'd rather connect with someone who's actually done this before, and who would be willing ask what are likely to be dumb-sounding questions.

  • Might take you 4 months to get your item. Read the international postage thread. Don't believe things will arrive on time, the go missing etc. So you might have to hold some inventory.

  • +1

Can be variable in quality and consistency too

  • We have made the occasional purchase with no hassle. But bear in mind they are a BtoB service and some of the sellers have very high MOQ.

  • These are comments on AliExpress. I haven't bought from the wholesale B2B side of the site.

Postage is taking forever at the moment (if it arrives at all).
Items bought 24 Aug & 11 Jun still not here. Item ordered 29Jun arrived in 21 days.

Items can be not quite as the photo shows or of second rate quality (but not always).

Sizing of clothes is all over the place. EG: In Australia I'm a medium, AliExpress I'm XL.

Having said that, I still take a gamble and buy cheap stuff from there that isn't time critical.

  • I got a sample from AliBaba recently. Correct, it's not click and pay, but rather a way to get in contact with manufacturers / distributors /etc. I sent the money via international transfer using CBA (fees involved), they shipped it out the same day and I received it in 5 days (TNT Express). Very easy experience and good communication with the sales rep but your experience may vary. Standard practice is 30% upfront before manufacturing commences, remaining before items are shipped.
