Washing Machine Playing up - Replace or Repair

Thoughts appreciated

Washing machine has started playing up. Its a Simpson machine, 5-7 yrs old possibly (cant remember when I bought it)
So ran a load of washing in it, and went ot check on it later, the lid was locked and no lights on anywhere.
Turned power off and on - nothing
Swapped power points - Ding - lights up and lid opens - tub full of water.
So ran a rinse and drain - think nothing of it

Next week same happens. swap power points - nothing.

I called a service dude, he turns up while im at work so son lets him in to work on it - and says its the power switch (I didnt believe him at all)

Disables power switch on machine so now the power point is the on/off switch - and he goes.
I come home - test it - still rooted. His test must have been turn it on - 10 seconds later, its working - leave..

Call him said must be control board and he will get a quote.

2-3 weeks pass no call I call him back and he now needs the model number.. give that to him, and another week later get the story but $460 to replace in 110 call out fee AGAIN…

Not sure what happens if he replaces the board and it is still dead - i dont really trust the bloke due to attitude getting back to me etc..

How long usually do washing machines last?
Am I better off putting that money into a new one with warranty and long life?

Thoughts?

    Yes.

    End.

    • yea thinking thats the go..

Anyone used Appliances Online? mate told me about them, havent looked yet.

Appliances Online are pretty good from my experience. They can price beat most things but it's a hassle having to call and go through model numbers on the phone.

However, in my experience, they take your order with no payment. Deliver on-time with call day before and call half hour before as a heads up. They park in loading bay, show you the boxes then take payment there and then. Then they take items up to your unit, unpack them, plug them in and take away packaging rubbish.

        Pretty good service I'd say.

I got the previous version of this and would recommend: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lg-75kg-top-load-washer-wtg75…

My washing machine blew up last Sunday afternoon, being 10 years old I figured time for a new one but where from in Melbourne right now. Never bought from Appliances Online, wasn't sure about them, but was watching the supercars and noticed they had sponsored one of the teams so thought I would give them a try. The washing machine was $200 cheaper than Hardly Normal and Good Guys, I ordered it at 9pm on Sunday night and it was delivered (free) the next day at lunchtime. They took away the old one and packaging for free. Tried it in the afternoon and it was faulty (not their fault). Samsung care told me to take it back to the "shop" I bought it from. Rang AO at 5pm on the Monday, no question, really helpful, new one delivered the next morning at 8:30. I'll buy from them again.

Sounds about right. Life expectancy of budget washing machine is 5 years.
    Replace it.

$460 to replace in 110 call out fee AGAIN…

    New Simpson starts from $555.
But don't buy Simpson, get a Bosch.

    • 5 yrs is pretty disappointing i think… My olds had one for 10+ yrs without issue

yea looks like all Bosch are front loaders.. Always had top loaders.. not really sure of advantages of either.

front loaders are the besst. I always had top loaders and had to buy in a hurry. A front loader was available and have had FLs since.

If you are handy Google the symptoms and see if it's a simple fix. Our dishwasher was playing up a while ago and cost us $2.45 for a new reed switch (with a bit of swearing to get it in and out) Nothing to lose if you're thinking of getting new one,

    • Done that :( no reports of issues with my model :'(

  • Changing PowerPoints made me think your homes power supply might have an issue, did the circuit breaker switch off?
Do you have a ground rod outside.

    • Yea had that thought.
Ran an extension lead from another room on different circuit from start - and it did the same thing.

"2-3 weeks pass no call I call him back and he now needs the model number.. give that to him, and another week later get the story but $460 to replace in 110 call out fee AGAIN…"

Shows a slack attitude not to have recorded the machine details on his first visit?
Too much to spend on a 5-7 y/o machine. Do some research and try a diy fix.
If that does not work then go for a LG top loader.

    • I would advise against an LG top loader. Mine rusted due to a manufacturing defect with the lid. LG were completely uninterested in assisting.

    • yea looking at new now.

      • Update us on what you get - I'm in the market as well lol
