Get 5% off at Coles

My extended family is hooked on this deal. Buy a gift voucher for Coles using the entertainment card, and you get 5% off. You ahev 2 years to use the voucher, and can use part at a time. Also I think you can buy as many as you like… (don;t need a voucher each time) as you do it online.

Basically you are prepaying for your groceries,a nd saving 5%. Might suit some people who use Coles all the time.

  • I saw some news from current affair program that by shopping from Aldi alone, you saved approx 37% of your weekly bills. Again, shopping at Aldi may not be to everyone's liking.

    • Sorry for off topic but anyone know when will Aldi open in SA? We're paying too much for groceries @ Woollies & Coles!!!

    • I find the notion of Aldi = cheaper is been overly exaggerated.

Stuff is cheaper at Aldi but you know why? Because everything is Aldi's home brand. They might have different names and labels but at the back of 90% of the stuff that Aldi dells, you will find "Made in Australia (or China) for Aldi…"

If you compare that to your brand name milk, soft drink, pasta, chips, sure it is cheaper but if you buy home brand by Coles or Woolies (Home Brand and Savings I think) exclusively, it will work out the same if not better.

      • Actually we have been shopping almost-exclusively at Aldi for 12 months now, and found

        1. Their home brand is actually of higher quality than the equivalent at Coles/Woolies/Franklins
        2. At a lower price too!

One of my classic is milk (got two kids who drank a lot of milk) — $3.05 for 3 litre full cream it is quite a bit cheaper than No Frills/Home Brand/Savings/Black & Gold or whatever.

You can definitely see where Aldi is cutting cost but buying from them still works out cheaper with little compromise on quality. What is lacking in Aldi is "choices" — which is a luxury invented last century that many of us are just getting too used to it. However we have been trying to re-tune our buying habits. We are trying to fix our mindset on "buying milk and chocolate biscuits", rather than "buying Dairy Farmers and Arnott's".

  • I went to Aldi when I was in QLD. Unfortunatley we don't have it here in SA yet. Not like you can do your whole shop there anyway, so the coles thing might be a good addition.

    • You can do all your shopping there…

  • Apologies for these newcomer questions… what is the 'entertainment card'? Did some searching on the Coles website and also at http://giftcards.com.au and did not come up with anything.

Must these gift cards be specifically for Coles only or can they be for the whole Coles Group & Myer (as is one option on the giftcards website)?

  • That's it!

  • or you can buy through this card $19.95 for ozbargainers

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/5404

Still valid as of today (although deal is marked as expired) You can test this by scrolling down to the promo filed and entering the code and check its validity before signing up

  • I got one of these cards but it's the Emergency Memberlink one (you get it free for being an SES volunteer). The presidential card gets rebranded, into Entertainment Book, Emergency Memberlink, etc.

  • i am a member of coles and i only get 5% off every purchase

  • Any % is good these days. Thanks for the tip!

As for Aldi, I have one around the corner from where I live and have only set foot inside it once. It just didn't really seem to have all the usual things I would buy - does it depend on the size of the store?

    • If "usual thing I would buy" means the "usual BRAND I would buy", then unfortunately it's a NO. Aldi does not stock most of the usual brand you find in Coles/Woolies/Franklins/IGA. However I am pretty sure they stock most consumables you "need" from a supermarket, regardless the size of the store (they are usually pretty small comparing to Coles or Woolies).

  • ALDI is the way to go. I shop there, and occasionally go to coles which is in the same complex to get 1 or 2 items that I must have ;)

  • The problem with buying the 5% off vouchers is that if they get lost in the mail you probably are stuffed and cannot get your money back easily. So I think is a gamble. I'd do it if I lived near the office and could pick up tho'

    • Not necessarily - cards I get from the presidential card are sent registered mail and that is free.

  • I love ALDI. So far I haven't missed anything there. Still today, after many years of shopping there, I'm still surprised about some of the cheap prices compared to the bigger supermarkets. And if it comes to variety… just use your creativity - isn't that what cooking's all about?! :)

  • the voucher I bought from entertainment book came registered mail

I have one handy for purchases just in case I go to coles, but I don't specifically go there.

    No Aldi where I live
