  • lumen? how far do these light up, are they for close work, or long distance viewing?

    • The advert clearly shows it's zoomable. So it will do both wide and focused view. I have a couple of different but sort of similar headlamps and they are bright as. I zoom in on things hundreds of metres away. As for the lumens, well I would not trust a generic chinese stated lumen rating anyway. But these things are super bright. For $12 could you go wrong anyway?

Are these no-name 18650 batteries still a fire hazard?

Its a lithium device; just make sure you're following safe battery practices and even if it does go pop, its not going to burn through your propely considered charge station (i use a terracotta planting tray)

Ive had ryobi batts get hot.
      Apple ibook batteries smoke-out.
Softpack lipos of course (drone racing; they get abused).
      One phone puffed up.
      Etc.

Always charge lithiums somewhere safe, regardless.

      • Great points, would you have them somewhere you can monitor/keep an eye on them also?
I've never had battery issues, not to say I won't

        • I mean, to be 'correct' yes you would;
I do for the really high risk ones, like my softpacks; they're monitored the whole time, with a temperature beeper alarm rested on them.

For my phone, I make sure to only use a 750mAh charger; it charges in 5 hours; which is much healthier for the battery as I charge when I go to bed.

Ryobi is in a terracotta planting tray, on top of a metal toolbox; I don't monitor them, but there is a fire alarm above that toolbox for that reason.

Laptops I only charge when I'm in the room; usually their charging circuits remove the risk of battery fire; but that doesn't stop massive heat buildup.

        • Too right,a mate burnt down his man cave with a lot of memorabilia, computers, cameras etc in it a few years ago now, Lucky the fire brigade turned up in 5 minutes flat because it was going into his house.
Two lithium battery’s were the cause…

Oh wtf do you need a flashing mode. Id pay real money for a torch that doesn't do that shit

    • I think it's a self-defence feature for disorienting people.

    • it uses half the battery (actually, less) to PWM an LED that much; means you get many more hours in the case of a search\rescue.
So if you have a fall down whatever you're exploring with your head torch, you can set it to strobe and hope someone sees it.

Also, disorientating to attackers (including wildlife) if you're using it for bush walking.

It's a really handy feature to have available if you need it.

        come on.
That is a very particular example
Not to mention if they wanted to put it on it should be a different switch rather than every time you want to turn on the light you have to click multiple times to get the light.

        • If you're into spelunking or hiking, especially alone; while it might be particular, it's certainly not uncommon.

I've had several instances where my torch has helped someone locate me when I've been urbexing underground.
Voices echo in abandoned tubes; you can't always locate from sound.
Admittedly, I didnt need to use strobe, just waved it like a madman, but if I was stuck somewhere and expected it to last days, I know it could.

    • The flashing is really handy for trail running at dusk. Popular bush Trails can be busy with walkers and back packers 3 abreast hogging the trails. Setting to head torch to flash works a treat getting their heads out of iphones and trail sharing happening when coming up from behind lol
