Would You Signal in These Cases?

So this intersection has always puzzled me a little bit.

Diagram here

Let's say you're car A, would you signal RIGHT to go to:

A/ Mackell Road
B/ Riddle Road
C/ Both, you're on a turning arrow.

Now let's say you're car B, would you signal LEFT to go to:

D/ St Heliers Bay Road
E/ Riddle Road
F/ Both, you're turning left even though there is no turning arrow.
G/ Turn into St Heliers Bay Road or Parkside road is straight, don't need to signal.

Can't have poll with 2 votes option so leave a comment below.

Personally I do C and F.

Reason for posting: followed too many cars that have done B and G, some goes as far as honking when I signal right to turn into Mackell Road.

Have you tried asking over on NZBargain.co.nz??

    C. You are turning.

    F. You are turning.

But NZ road rules could differ from Australia..

Indicate based on the arrow markings on the road - indicate when following a bent arrow, don't when there is no arrow or a straight arrow.

    • Car B doesn't have any marking arrow and only have a green light. Which option would you go with?

Left into Riddle Road. Won't indicate if going on St Heliers Bay Road.

        • So that means you won't signal turning into St Heliers Bay and won't signal going into Parkside

  • C & F

    Lol.. What a mess..
A round-a-bout would make things a lot clearer.
    I'd say B and E, but… what a mess!

if that was in my local area, no indicating is required for any of the lanes or turns

no one indicates in my area period!

I suppose you're not asking BMW drivers? I keep hearing that those cars don't come with signals or they're just something on the options list that noone ticks.😋

  • I would probably go with C & F, but that picture isn't the best indicator (intended) of the road markings etc.
It also depends on what traffic is on the same green light as you.

  • It's hard to tell without actually seeing the intersection.

I always try to make my behaviour on the roads predictable as possible. So if I Car B going either left, i probably would indicate, but also watch the car behind me to see that they're not taking off too close behind. Even better, (and again, it depends on how the intersection really looks like in real life) and if I'm the leading vehicle at the lights, I might also point my car slightly in the direction I intend to go. Of course, being in the correct lane for your intended direction of travel also helps!.

This looks to be the only side that has road marking arrows.

      • I didn't look at the streetview before, but from the link you've provided, I can see how someone can get confused, but it doesn't actually look too bad.
The left lane is for people travelling the left two directions and the right lane is for the more "straight" and "right" direction.

I can't recall off the top of my head right now, but there's some pretty bad ones here in Vic as well.

A real sh*tshow of an intersection.

I’d probably use the rule of thumb each direction has left, right and two ‘straights’. Not indicate for the two straights, only indicate for sharp left or right.

I might indicate veer left or veer right but only from halfway across the intersection, after passing the sharp left or right. But that is based on actually using the intersection, which I haven’t.

You no forgot no indication at all.
That's what most people do these days.

    B&E

  • The indicators are there to 'indicate your intentions'. So, unless you are going straight ahead ie following the road you are currently on, you indicate. Simple rule following with nil confusion.

Did you even look at the image?

      • -1

Yes. The simple answer is still the correct answer. Follow the road rules of indicating.

So if you're car B and you decide to go straight from Maskell Road to Parkside Road, you would indicate? even though it's going straight but technically you just left one road for another.

@johndough2020: Car B does not indicate, it is not changing direction, regardless of the name change.

I think you should attend your nearest police station and surrender your driver's licence. Tell them that you have absolutely no idea in regard to road rules, and for the safety of the general public, wish to surrender your licence.

I did, and they refused to take it away after I showed them this thread. So what do I do next?
