Is There a Way to Fix Car Interior Rubber Coating?

Hi everyone,

I have a fairly reasonable car (Nissan) purchased second hand about 4 years ago. Mechanical and electronic functions thankfully have been well maintained and uneventful apart from the usual battery and globe changes. Unfortunately over the years the sun has not been too kind to its interior and, although I do park under cover when at home, sometimes it can't be helped when visiting places.

The rubber on the interior trim is peeling and/or degraded. I have put up some pictures and was wondering if there was a reasonable way to fix this without replacing the pieces? I am open to going to a professional detailer if it's not too expensive but I am unsure if this is even fixable.

May be the OzB community can share experiences or hacks that can help alleviate the situation.

Pic1 : the left side of the stereo.. the perfume thing dripped coupled with the sun to cause this damage. Unfortunately I couldn't catch it before the damage occurred.

Pic2 and Pic3 : Both of the front door hand grips have been gradually peeling. Was pre-existing but has further deteriorated over the years.

Pic4 : Steering Wheel coating partially disappeared. This was also pre-existing but seems to have further deteriorated.

  • Replace is only option. A wrecker would be my first stop.

    • Nope, I’ve known dudes who could restore that. However, their skill costs a lot more than parts from a self serve wrecker.

Yeah.. the other thing older cars is that when you start replacing parts it doesn't always stop at that… Usually other things surrounding the part starts breaking down too.

        • I'd try using a little boiled linseed oil to make it less noticeable.

I have the same thing with my car, was thinking of using

    Or

    Though I haven't tried it.

In Pic 2 I can see it has even transitioned over to your denim. Be very careful.

Yeah the sun hasn't been kind to my denim either.

  • I am not sure if other cars also have this kind of problem in the Aussie sun. This was my first car and just because of this, I might never buy another Nissan ever again.

  • Has happened to our Nissan too. The rubbery coating on the power window switches is scratching off.

I wouldn’t replace with plasti-dip as it’ll likely do the same. I could scratch it all off and have shiny black plastic, or realest in a different colour with half decent paint. If you spray, it’ll be easier to remove the part and spray out if the vehicle.

As for the steering wheel, it’s a very high wear location and soft as well. Best solution is probably to buy a cover of some sort.

Sand paper, uv coating, or just wrap it. For the steering wheel you can put on a cover.

Broken rubber is always a let down .
