Anyone know of cheap or possibly free bike service?

Hi everyone,

Was just after a basic bike service (lube/clean/align chain, brake check/adjustment, wheel check/align) and had seen some bike shops often have free bike service/checks once in a while. Any one know of any offers currently on in VIC? or anywhere that does cheap bike services?

Everywhere I've looked it's around 90 bucks which is just way too expensive. To make it easier its only a singlespeed so not many parts on the bike.

I can do most of it is very easy to DIY, but I just want a professional to go over the bike the first time incase anything is wrong.

Thanks :)

  • Dyse, are you after servicing for a motorbike or just a normal pushbike?

    • -1

ive never heard of a singlespeed motorbike.

  • You are far better of learning to do it yourself, and it is really not that hard - there are some great websites that show how. Many of the "professionals" that work in bicycle shops are kids with a week's training, especially if you are not paying for it

    • Good suggestion. Would you be able to provide a link or two to some of these great websites? I have had a browse but most of them seem to have a greater level of assumed knowledge than I presently have, I am afraid.

      • +1

This guy is (well was, he passed away a few years ago) the guru. Website layout not so great but if you can find them there are some brilliant articles and guides and pretty much everything you need to know. Also has a lot of workaround to avoid buying expensive tools. I learnt heaps from it

This is pretty good too (except they want you to buy their expensive tools)

        • Excellent. Thanks very much.

  • Check out CERES in brunswick. Go there, learn to do your own service and use their tools.

  • hey all, thanks for responses! I should have clarified it is a push bike.
CERES sounds like a good option, the only thing was I wanted a pro to check over the bike to let me know it's safe. Do they have bike mechanics at CERES who sorta help you out/look over your bike?
Otherwise I am more than willing to learn how to do it myself.

    • I reckon if they're giving lessons they'd need to be fairly competent. There would be liability issues otherwise.

    • there are volunteers there to help, but not sure if they are professional bike mechanics (if such a thing exists).

It's a cool place to check out though, and when you become a member ($10 per year) you can use all their tools.

  • 99bikes has stores all over Melbourne.

You get a free $39 gear tune (mini-service?) if you join their free club: http://99bikes.com.au/frequent-riders

*I think a one month wait after joining applies.

HOWEVER, given you've got a single-speed this may not help!

Alternatively, you can PM me and I'll have a look (not pro, just experienced DIY) - in CBD and inner West (South Kingsville).

  • thanks for the offer and advice kingsville. I'm on the other side of the city to you and am not riding much at all at the moment due to health issues but if i don't sort it out by jan/once i get riding i'll drop you a PM! thanks again, very generous of you.
