Looking to Get a Mesh Wi-Fi Setup, Does The Tenda Nova MW3 Need to Be Connected to The Modem via Ethernet or Wi-Fi?

Hello guys, as said above I want to get a mesh wifi setup and looking at a Tenda Nova MW3 and was wondering if I have to connect it to the modem via ethernet or if I can connect it to the modem wirelessly. I would prefer a wireless modem connection as I don't have ethernet wired up from the modem to the other side of my house.

  • Don't get the Tenda Nova MW3. Get a Google Nest Wi-Fi instead. More modern and secure.

    The Tenda Nova MW3 does not support AES.

      The Google Nest isn't really an alternative to the MW3 due to the huge difference in cost. Try the TP-Link Deco M5 for under $200 on special.

      • I think I will wait until prime day for some sales
        Due to the security not being the best I will not get a MW3, I will just wait for the TP link deco on prime day.
        Thank you for all your replies and helpful answers and advice!

    • A big price difference though.

      For a ~$100 mesh setup, the MW3's okay and a decent, cheap interim solution until wifi 6 mesh setups become more commonplace (which is why I got one for my dad; he'll eventually get my Amplifi setup when I get wifi 6). The biggest issue is that it only has 100mbps ethernet.

      • I decided to go with a TP link RE300 wifi range extender with mesh capability too I got for $50 delivered and it arrived today and works well. Didn’t put it in the mesh mode but left it as a standalone wifi range extender for now. Works very well and I am really happy with it. I usually get 110mbps and this wifi range extender does 100mbps at the other side of the house which is impressive and the other side of the house was a wifi dead spot. with the mesh tp link has I have to get a one mesh compatible router which starts from $85 and goes up to $200 for one with 4G backup, I’ll be getting that one in the near future too.
        Thanks to everyone who helped out

  • NBN NTD or VDSL2 modem—->Ethernet—->first MW3. The extra MW3s use wifi.

      Oh so the first one has to be connected to ethernet next to the modem and the second can connect to the first one in another room.

      • Yes. (You can also use ethernet backhaul.)
