Would You Eat These Prawns?

Bought ‘fresh’ Aussie banana prawns 🦐 from Coles this afternoon to go in pasta. Some of them looked really suss with full green entrails 🤢. We deveined the normal ones to eat. Not sure if this is a natural and safe thing e.g. prawns feasted on seaweed (they are the cockroaches of the sea after all) or if they are dodgy and we should chuck them. I’m not sure if I can bring myself to eat them, but also do t like waste.

Does anyone know what’s going on here? Would you eat them?

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your advice. We didn't eat the green slim ones (just four, we ate the rest) and didn't get the chance to cook them to see if the roe would turn orange. I showed the photo to Coles and the store manager said "ewww" and gave me a refund straight away. I agree with a lot of people here that perhaps they were edible and maybe we're conditioned to like things to look uniform, as expected etc, which is not great for preventing waste and keeping costs low etc. I think in future I'll go to the trawler or fish monger and ask for what I'm looking for - lesson learned.

Affected by gamma rays or bitten by a radioactive spider. Either way once they come back to life they'll be angry. Dispose of before this happens or your life may be in danger!

I like prawns but I think I won't be able to eat them for a while after seeing those pics. If those are normal banana praws, I don't feel like eating banana prawns.

  • EAT THEM. I usually pick up a couple of these usually around January to work off my Xmas belly. But now is a great time to eat them too to get that beach bod you always wanted.

    • haha! I should have, I need a bit of that - but no, maybe next year.

The biggest sign is how they smell. If they smell rotten or not quite right, probably best to avoid them.

Cook it first… and if it turns orange then it is roe.
Based on the pictures it looks like roe to me.

    • Sorry, we chucked the four prawns before I saw this - if it happens again I'll do an experiment.

  • Those are roe, they will turn orange when cooked. Yum

  • Yes, that looks normal to me. As long as it does not smell. Just devein and wash the green stuff.

Always buy prawns frozen. Takes 10 mins to defrost under running water. Deli ones have just sat around all day thawed, gross!

they eat banana's thats why they are green, their good to go mate, let me know how you go
also did you only buy 5 of those?

    • Bought half a kilo and ate most of them. These were the 4 suss ones. We weren't so sure, so they hit the trash, but next time I'll cook them and see.

Well, don't eat them "fresh". They are meant to be cooked

  • I would cook them but they would be "well cooked".

If from Colesworth then take them back and ask for a full refund.

    • yup, they refunded me without drama. I'm still unsure if it was roe or other dodginess.

83% of Ozb says you shouldn't eat it which means it's perfectly fine to eat (after a sniff test). You really can't go wrong with doing the opposite of what the majority think.

Lol, considering the amount of people that pos fast food deals you might be right…

  • They are rotten

  • rule of thumb if you buy prawn from anywhere, the grade A - if hold the tail the head down less than 15 degrees. B head down up to 45-50 degrees. C= almost pull of from the body. and from the picture it is C and normally the smell fishy is stronger than the grade A

  • It's roe… Which means it fresh.

  • Prawns with black heads aren't fresh. These ones look ok for now.

  • Looks like a delicious dinner, I could eat them just like that.

  • It's a No from me.
