    Code doesn't work.

    • +12

      It shouldn't

    • +1

      Sale starts at 8PM

  • can i run iptv via this ?

  • +1

Damn, is this all time low?

  • Good price, I just got the junior one for $200 with latitude deal. ($50 voucher)

  • +4

I'm using the non-pro version and can't be happier.
It's better than Firestrick, apple tv, chome. Don't have any other devices to compare.

It can install VPN software and connect to your favourite location and allow streaming netflix, hot star etc.

It's plex strteaming is just seamless, I have been able to stream 4k movies on wired network of a file size of 30Gb and worked flawlessly.

    Hope this helps.

    • Do you use it as the Plex server or use it to connect remotely to your Plex server? I've heard it can do both.

      • Non pro version can only stream, the one on this post can be used as a server.
The challenge is you can connect only 1 USB HD, not sure if you could expand it using a hub.

        • Ahh of course, cheers!

    • +1

Which VPN have you got working for Hotstar?

      • +1

Nord, it stopped working for a few months and I have noticed they added a raft of new servers. It started working again a few weeks ago.

  • is there still any reason for this IF i were to get a PS5/XBX?

    • +1

well one is a media player with android tv and the other two arent.

    • +1

they're different thing. this is the media player with the most comprehensive codec. apps on a game console are not as good as on an android tv.
I have this when I reordered the PS5.

      • have the codecs for PS5/XBX been confirmed yet? I'd be very surprised if they do not meet or beat the Shield (pro).

        • +1

Sony won't even answer my questions via email or Twitter on DV support for uhd discs, I have to assume they either won't support (as they aren't for gaming) or that they will wait untill stock stabilises and they are generating more profit to license it, adding it at a later date via software. I guess it's less than a month now so time will tell.

          • -1

@boredofficeworker: The Xbox can technically be used for a similar function as this because if you don't have KODI on your shield then you're stupid….and KODI is obviously also available on the xbox platform

            • @beade:

If you don't have Kodi on your shield you're stupid

Little bit bit dogmatic, but ok.

I uhhh, didn't mention Xbox in my comment either, I Only referenced Sony and DV UHD support.

XboxSX supports DV all around so it's probably a better media console, shame the games don't appeal to me (and most that do will come to PC anyway)

    • Depends on your use case.

    • +1

We don't have all the details on PS5 yet but Shield does some things PS doesn't and it's far less clunky to use than a PS4, they're hardly comparable TBH. Shield just does everything that it does better than everyone else but it doesn't do much exclusively.

  • Good deal :)

  • +1

Good price but I'd wait to see if Apple TV is announced tomorrow.

  • +1

Absolutely great unit. Gigabit ethernet, 4k, Dolby Vision, reliable Chromecast (as good as Google devices) flawless CEC, AI upscale is great, direct plays files from my NAS (easily handles 100GB 4k remux files without transcode) Google assistant in the remote and you can stream games with minimal latency (I don't play FPS, but many less twitchy games work well)

    • +1

Thanks for this. Was going to ask about Game streaming latency. I'm keen on precision platformers though so I think it's a no go still but they are a tempting unit

      • +1

I play platformers like Mario via emulator directly from the shield without issue, but things like Oki and the blind forest streamed from my PC was just a tad over from my liking. Most games add around 5-6ms network latency over local play.

        • Yeah that minimal latency really adds up over streaming. I've been experimenting with Steamlink on both RasPi and a laptop. All over Ethernet, but there's just a bit too much for really fast-twitch games like Spelunky. Guess I just need to buy a new gaming machine for the TV :|

          • @spendybeans: Yep. Twitchy games remain PC territory for me personally. Even the Bluetooth on my ps4 pro adds too much for spelunky imho.

            • @boredofficeworker: Really on the ps4?? I have been using an XB1s controller over bluetooth to PC, both through a dongle and through an 8bitdo adapter (v2.1 bluetooth I think) and I've had some latency at times but not tooooooo bad. It's pretty much instantaneous when on PC.

I do like my couch though…

I've just gotten a longer HDMI to run to the TV. I'll see how this goes, but I'm not holding my breath. Spelunky 2 @ 144fps is pretty hard to resist though…

              • +2

@spendybeans: Spelunky is serious business ;) Super Meat Boy was probably worse though. That being said, Many games are just better on the couch when latency isn't a major factor.

    • is this better than a HTPC you can build yourself?

      • +1

I think it is, does everything I used to do with my HTPC, but also uses less power, is instant on, CEC, costs less… List goes on. For me a decent HTPC with all these features would be on par but cost more and use more power.

        • +1

Thanks! I recently built one for about the same cost, but you're right HTPC is more power hungry.

      • Cannot decide between this or new 2020 Chromecast just for LAN video streaming. Still, a very solid deal

    • Do you use Youtube, Plex, Amazon Prime Video? If so, do any of them have adjustable playback speeds?

    • Agreed. Was sceptical at first but having recently grabbed one I'm a convert.
Was happily using my Windows 7 Media Centre for 10~ years and so didn't want to let go of it but this does everything I need.
Atmos audio to work with my new Samsung soundbar, AMAZING upscaling, plays from my QNAP NAS, runs Emby/Plex, etc.

BTW: If you have a bunch of QFF points doing nothing (and considering international travel is a non event), you can grab one on the Qantas Store.
I did a points and cash top up.

      • I'm old fashioned…but hope to eventually replace a Win 7 Media Center PC with it. Can this record FTA TV if I plug in a USB TV Tuner?

        • I believe you "can"… I'm pretty sure I read people have hooked up a USB tuner and got FTA working with it through Kodi or other similar apps
Best do a search on the appropriate Shield forums, etc..

  • I love mine. Also serves as a NAS in our home, it supports SMB v3 and external drives.

    • NFS ftw.

    • Yeah but what reads v3. My router can set from 1 to 3 on a per drive basis under it's NAS settings (DD-WRT firmware on a Linksys router ) but I can only get 2 to work on Kodi (via an Android box) and Android phones and Tablets. Windows 10 works with 3 or 2. I'd rather use 3 but nothing else i have works with it, so i am curious what you use with it ?

      • Let me check my setup and reply later. Been a while since I've been in there, maybe it supports 'up to v3'? I can see the Shield external drive on all my devices (Windows Desktop, laptops, Android file app etc.). No issues whatsoever.

        • +1

V3 has a V2 fallback that allows V2 support but I had it turned off for testing to see if I could get V3 connections. The only thing that did work (well, that I could get working) at V3 was Windows, everything else needed V2. But I only have Android and Windows clients to check with. I currently have V3.1 set and V2 as the fallback if necessary.

Worth upgrading from the $70 Vodafone TV?

    • +1

I want to know as well. Thinking about getting Google TV but if this is better than I might pull a trigger 😉

    • The Vodafone has a TV tuner, and the everyday user probably won't miss the extra features, but the Shield is just superior in every aspect. It's snappier, well supported, has a Plex server option and NAS options. Dolby Atmos, Vision, etc. It's very Apple-like as in it just works with everything.

If you have a 4K TV, the AI upscaling makes a real difference too. Not just a gimmick.

    • Yes definitely. I had a few minor issues with the VTV so bit the bullet & invested. The Shield has not faulted or glitched in anything I've thrown at it. Remote is great too.

But I only use it for YouTube, Netflix, Disney Plus, Tubi, Foxtel Go (via Kodi) & PLEX (playing 30-80gb mkv 4K movies via external hard drive).

      Highly recommend!!

  • Just double check. I can see there is netflix on the remote.
Can I use this Nvidia somewhere to enter the subscription for example Disney/Stan/Prime? so I can watch it with my old TV (my TV is not a smart tv)?

    • +1

      yes with HDMI input

      • Yes, if I connect this Nvidia to my old TV via hdmi.
Then can I enter my Disney subscription information for example within Nvidia and then view it with my old TV?
        Thanks

        • Yes, you have it correct. You can watch Netflix, Disney, YouTube etc. on any TV that has a HDMI input

  • Anyone that have one know if it works with King of Fighters ALLSTAR? I heard that not all Android games work on the Shield.

  • Any thoughts on stock?

Will this sell out in 1.7 seconds?

    • Your guess is as good as mine, but at this price there's no way they won't sell out pretty quickly.

    • they've sold 100 already in 35mins… seems like they have a bit in stock…still going strong

    • Grabbed one.

Joined eBay Plus hoping to double dip with the $20 voucher but only one code could be applied.

Will be replacing a Chromecast Ultra.

  • +2

    Got one!!

    • +1

Same. Have a perfectly functioning Vodafone TV but there are a few niggling issues. Now to justify to the wife.

  • +1

Just bought one. Already have a shield 2017 hooked onto a Panny OLED but bought for the below reasons:
    Dolby vision/Atmos via Shield
    Remote
    Enhanced AI upscaling
    Plex server

  • -1

Doesn't matter, come at 8:12pm, to possibly get one and .. the deal expires at 8 pm QLD time (AEST) DOH !

  • Just bought one, was very disappointed by the GameStream quality (might be my network though).

  • Why the stand is sold separate when every picture shown/ promoted with the stand?
