95+% of what he says is in no way controversial, the 5% that is, is often misconstrued. The people who generally have an issue with him usually haven't actually listened to anything he has said, or read anything he has written.

Why not read both, you get to form your own opinions that way.

The article seems to have a go at him basing his morality largely on Christianity, which he does (although he doesn't claim to be one). As far as I know, this book has little to do with morality though and is more about responsibility.

I think his best critic in regards to the religious underpinnings of his morality is Sam Harris who is a vocal atheist. He even admits that Christianity is the reason we have arrived at our current morality in the west, just that now that we have arrived here we no longer need it.

Most of what his critics say in opinion pieces such as the one linked above are red herrings, but when those with opposing views have a back and forth with him, where he has the right of reply, there critiques seldom fare very well.

It's sad when people much rather show their ignorance, looking for opinion pieces that miss the mark, or try to write him of because he got addicted to pain killers than actually listen to what he has to say and form their own informed opinions.

@tryagain: People read some opinion piece on him and take up a lazy 'opinion'

"has little to do with morality though and is more about responsibility."

            -this.

Jordan peterson in a nutshell is stfu and be a man and take up responsibility it's your moral obligation to society to make something useful of yourself.

I tried this but totally got turned off by the many Jesus and Christianity references. I'm not a white western Christian so probably I'm not the author's target market.

same experience here, I think the basic ideas are okay but not exactly groundbreaking. The way the ideas were explained though - borderline unbearable

I've watched quite a number of videos and interviews about Jordan and I myself agreeing with his point of view most of the time. He's quite moderate in his views and is quite respectful, occasionally blunt and slightly harsh when it comes to things he highly disagrees with (might be the law to force people's preferred pronoun use, I think and gender wage gap). His debates are often backed by proper research and facts, instead of fudged up statistics just to back his arguements which instilled a healthy dose of respect.
I've learnt a great deal from him and am hoping he recovers from his addiction. I feel that people like him are able to bring change to people, especially those who need guidance/direction or might be too far aligned on their political views. The Cathy Newman interview was definitely the peak of his popularity which may have also made modern feminism look pretty bad.

It's just common sense stuff guys. If you seriously this stuff is insightful then have a good hard review of your life mate

    • Unfortunately, many in society today aren't taught self-responsibility, which is why his teachings, although simplistic to some, are a revelation to many.

Follow the advice in this book of you want to lose a debate to the human personification of a trash panda, get hooked on benzos and get held hostage in the Ukraine by your daughter and her crazy conman husband.

Anyone wondering why Peterson is "controversial" will not find the answer in this book.

Bear in mind he is a clinical psychologist, not a doctor or scientist, and you may find the book gives some helpful advice and new perspectives.
It is also very entertaining. This was written for a popular audience, in contrast to his heavy academic tome "Maps of Meaning", which nobody read or understood.

You don't have to agree with everything. Jordan has not turned me into a church-going Christian, but has helped me understand my religious friends a bit better.

  • The comments in this post are entertaining and like watching a text version of a Ted Talk.
