  • is the freshy good?
Let's say compared with stone & wood

    • +1

Stone and wood is way better. For me I prefer drinking wine at home and beer at the pub where it tastes so much fresher and there is more variety on tap.

    • +1

      I prefer the 4 Pines to S&W.

    • +3

Refreshing Ale tastes like beer. Stone & Wood taste like Passionfruit Cider.
So it depends if you like the taste of beer or not ;)

      • +1

They both taste like beer, you just have beer shoehorned to all taste like macro lager from the 80s.

  • Got a carton of each - have not had the freshy but their pacific is quite nice and good to have in the beer fridge as a mid strength option.

  • Sampled the Freshy at a picnic on the weekend, not a bad drop. Wouldn't be my go to but at $10/6 couldn't say no to a couple. Thanks OP

  • Pacific urine more like it. Does not compare well to Stone & Wood which it is trying to emulate or to other beers that 4 Pines make which generally they do a good job of.

    • +2

You get what you pay for I guess. I rate stone and wood pacific way above this for sure, but for $10/6 it’s hard to pass up

    • +2

I see a lot of comments about Stone & Wood in here, but that has to the least beer tasting beer I've ever had (And I've had heaps). If you don't like the taste of beer then fair enough, stick with Stone & Wood. But if you like actual beer, then Stone & Wood is like cider by comparison.

      • +4

The comparisons are being made because both are "Pacific Ales".

I like the taste of beer (And I've had heaps), and I also like the taste of Stone and Wood Pacific Ale, they're not mutually exclusive.

        • -4

Sure, but let's not pretend that Stone & Wood taste like actual beer. It is closer to a cider so comparing it to any other beer is not really comparing apples with apples… (see what I did there?)

          • @1st-Amendment: actually the refreshing ale here is probably quite close to what you describe as actual beer - more your traditional bitter lager

          • @1st-Amendment: Stone and wood tastes like hops, and some people like hop-forward hazy beer. I've probably had 75+ examples of hazy/unfiltered beers and this is just the taste they have.

            • -1

@DavoW: Care to name a few? I don't know of any that have the pungent passionfruit flavour of Stone & Wood. They could literally call it a cider and get away with it.

          • @1st-Amendment: Comparing one (well known) Pacific Ale to another seems fair to me. They're all fruity to some extent.

          • @1st-Amendment: You know there is more than one style of beer, right? Not everything tastes like American Adjunct Lager, which is what most mass-produced Aussie lagers emulate.

            • @Schmiddler: Actually the most generic lager is a derivative of the original Czech Pilsener…

              • @1st-Amendment: Not many Aussie lagers taste like Czech pilsner (and I mean if we want to get more technical, in the Czech Republic they don't refer to them as pilsners unless they come from Pilsen - it's an Appalachian to them, not a style - otherwise it's just a pale lager). Semantics aside, my point still stands. Just because something doesn't taste like a pale lager doesn't mean it doesn't taste like beer.

      • +3

        You've said that twice now.

Stone & Wood tastes like American hops - fruity, citrusy, pine-y, resinous.

I'm not sure if you know this but hops are a key ingredient in beer.

So you don't like "the taste of beer". You just don't like the aroma and flavour of beer that's been made with American hops. What you describe as "the taste of beer" is very likely "the taste of mass produced Australian lagers".

        • +2

I agree with most of what you've said, but just FYI, pac ale is made with Galaxy hops which are actually an Australian strain.

    • Interesting… If just one beer consumed, I'd go S&W. But after 2 I'm over it and much prefer the 4 pines beers.
Went to the S&W brewery early this year. It was pretty warm in there and from my home brew experience a warmer fermentation gives that fruity yeast taste.
So I think if you can stomach a fruity beer, S&W. If your are having a bit of a session, a 6 of 4 pines is the go.

If you want to hedge your bets, try Tight Red Togs which goes out here for $35 a slab.

      • The fruity passionfruit flavour comes primarily from the Galaxy hops, not from esters produced via stressed (hot) yeast during fermentation. Do you really think the biggest independent craft brewery in Aus doesn't ferment at the right temps? I'm sure they know what they're doing.

        • Well yeah, Galaxy/ Melba hops etc constitute a Pacific Ale. The correct ferment range might be 19 -25C. I just recon S&W beers have the taste you get closer to 25C. Nothing wrong with it. It's a nice drop. They have about 20 different 'beers' on tap at the Brewery..some are absolute shockers. But respect them for experimenting. At the end of the day i recon the 4 pines product is a 'crispier' beer and goes down better if you are having a few, the S&W is maybe a more 'premium' taste, but you get over it quick.

          • @tunzafun001: Fair enough, each to their own flavour wise (I don't particularly enjoy 4 Pines beers), just sounded like you were negging their brewing practices which based on the many beers I've had from them are top notch. I've been a fan of most of the experimental stuff coming out of there. Not all of them blew me away, but I definitely haven't had any sink pours. Which ones didn't you enjoy?

            • @Schmiddler: The Belgian Stone Fruit Ale was rough (reminded me of the flavour you get when fruit goes way over ripe) nor a fan of the 'Gatherer', or the white choc cocunut Ale. I was expecting better things from the Cloud Catcher (but I actually recon the one I had in the pub was better), maybe it was a bottom of the keg situation. The Jasper and Garden Ale were pretty nice and I love they have a Reinvigam8 electrolyte recovery beer! My partner liked the hot toddy beer (but she is Scottish).

              • @tunzafun001: Makes sense, I think they’re mostly pilot batch beers that I’ve never seen out of the brewery, other than gatherer and cloud catcher which I’m inclined to agree are just ok. Never got my hands on the electrolyte beer but I heard very mixed reviews haha. Points for creativity I guess, but if it wasn’t $10ish bucks a can I can see it being a good hair of the dog.

  • +1

Thanks op, got 2. Forget the Amazon deals.

  • never tried it but $10 so going for it

  • 4 pines used to be my favourite, but since they were bought out, they don't manufacture locally anymore, and their beer now tastes like generic Forsters beer. yuk.

  • Showing up as 20 for me now, must be finished?

  • Thanks OP. Only got the Pacific as the Refreshing was sold out. But there were a ton of other specials and wound up spending about a hundred bucks. Well played, thanks mate.

  • Sold out in Victoria

  • +2

Told me it was sold out in Victoria, but I was able to choose a store for click and collect then re-add to my cart.

  • Seems like first choice got super ozbargained. My order isn't showing up in my account despite getting an email with order and also they are doing captcha to get in.

    I mean it wasn't that good of a deal….

  • Pacific back to $20.

  • Just reported again! Looks like it’s expired! Back to 20!!

    • I just bought some in store, still a few some available at $10 in Flemington VIC at least.
