[NO DEAL?] Virgin Mobile: USB Modem, 10GB Wireless Prepaid, 100 Days to Use, $39

120

UPDATE
I now have conflicting statements from staff at Virgin.
So this is NOT a confirmed deal.

EXPLANATION
I've gotten 2 modems from Virgin this year, 1 just a month ago. On both, I got a bonus 4 GB within days after activating them.

I spoke with one staff member a few days ago who explained that, on new services, there is a bonus 4GB.

So that's when I posted the details of the deal, as it seemed to confirm that the deal I received is ongoing.

However, I then bought a BYO sim, which is a new service. It's been a day or so since I activated it, however there's been no bonus 4GB. I rang up Virgin and someone there said that, no, there is no bonus 4GB on new services. Just whatever is advertised.

(He also sorted out my purchase, on the spot, which was good)

So, I apologize for posting this as there seems to be no official promotion on and I'm not sure why I received a bonus 4GB on each of my modems.

ORIGINAL DETAILS BELOW

I spoke with a Virgin Mobile sales person, just a couple days ago, who confirmed for me, there is a current promotion of adding 4GB data to all new services (possibly only if bought online).

If you couple that with the other current promotion, of half off on modems, you can get a $39 modem, with 6GB and 100 day expiry; then get the bonus 4GB on top of that.

Last I checked (a day or two ago), Virgin charges in 1kB blocks per session, so the plan's not too bad (I read somewhere most Optus plans are per 10MB).

My research has been far from thorough, this time.

I've purchased a couple of modems before that (it was same price for the modem + data as just getting a top up, albeit with modem has a shorter expiry on data) and did get 4GB bonus each time.

I'd strongly recommend checking with a sales person, if the bonus 4GB for new services still applies and how much data you will get if you buy say, this modem.

I didn't buy this modem as I'm getting ADSL hooked up in a week or so; so I went with the BYO plan instead $10 for 300MB (+ 4GB I should hope, with maybe 30 days expiry)

I have this modem from Virgin and the cheaper one.

I've also been playing around with SpeedTest.Net

Although with this modem, it generally has faster uploads as reported (typical .5 to 1 Mb/s versus .2 to .3 Mb/s) the download speed is not always faster than the previous modem (typical .5 Mb/s to 4.5 Mb/s versus typical .6 Mb/s to 3 Mb/s)

I've tried to exclude data from when the modem was not near the window, storms and construction work (nearby construction work coincides with frequent drop outs).

i was using one of these last year, i recently switched to tethering my iphone via USB and am getting much better speeds now… i was expecting it to be worse, so pleasantly surprised…

  • I still have several modems and data from Coles that I haven't activated…

    • yeh, and all the credits on the Telstra Prepaids.

Seems like a good deal but to confirm the extra 4GB? I can't see anything on the site about this.

  • For me, I use very little data download every month (< 1GB) and therefore I prefer very long expiry date. Getting an Optus prepaid 8GB 50SMS pack suits my needs. It has 6 month expiry!

    • You left out the PRICE $

Bought from eBay, about $40 or $80 with a WiFi modem.

I would also like to know if anyone has confirmed the extra 4GB yet?

    • kinda hoping someone else will reconfirm it (I got it last month and an operator confirmed it 2 days ago) however I'll be following up with them soon as I just got a BYO sim (which isn't actually this modem, but the operator said it's 4GB for all new broadband services)

On Virgin it may take you the full year to USE the 10 GB, good deal, IF Virgin works in your area.

      Optus mate.

  • Do you think the 4GB bonus works with this offer? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/57475

Sorry all. I just had a discussion with a Virgin staff member which contradicted what the first person said. I've updated the deal details with a full explanation.
